You now see why Japan loves Rei. :-P j/k

Whose joking? I'm certain that's part of Rei's appeal, as well as her continued success. Of course, Anno claims that she was supposed to be creepy and I personally found her to be quite a strange. By the end of the series (spoilers for the series and End of Evangelion)
it looked like Rei was starting to warm to Shinji, however as soon as he saw all the floating Rei bodies he became terrified of her, to the point where he rejected her by the End of Evangelion.

Of course, for the Rebuild movies (Spoilers for the original sereis within)
they move away from that idea so that Rei can get warm, fuzzy feelings for Shinji which he seems to return. I'm sure this pleases a lot of Rei fans greatly.

Very true. I just wanted to make sure people knew that I was making the statement as a joke, not as a racist statement. It's the kind of thing that can be easily misinterpreted by people who don't really know me as well, thus the disclaimer. ^^;

And I agree the direction they're going with Rei in the movies is interesting. I can't wait to see where 3.0 goes.

They also make it easy to dislike Asuka in Rebuild with the whole elevator confrontation thing. Rei end seems highly likely with all the subtle romantic buildup. Still rooting for Asuka, though.

Neon Genisis Evangelion - 08

Asuka enters the fray and she's so bossy that she tells a japaneese person in Japan to think German. Wut!?

I always forget that such a major character enters the show so many episodes into it's run. Considering her role in the show, and in merchandising and advertising for the franchise you'd think she'd been there since episode one.

Then again (spoilers for the end of the show and Rebuild)
Kaworu was around for exactly ONE episode of the original series. Yet it's been teased teased that he'd have a major role in the second Rebuild movie (and now the third movie, because he definitely didn't 'come down from the moon' in 2,0), and he's been in the previews for both movies, not to mention sitting around shirtless on the moon during a completely throwaway scene. I guess he's really popular.

Knight in the Area 01:

If it keeps up this pace, this could be my show of the season. I already love the setup. Two brothers, one who's worshiped by all, the other resigned to live under his shadow, but secretly practices at night by himself. Enter a lady blast-from-the-past who reminds him of when he played soccer with his brother, and the flame starts to burn again[...]

Oh my, I thought everyone was kind of half-joking about the Adachi thing. I guess not.

Nah, there's definitely a huge resemblance to Touch in the setup, even if the minor details are different, the core appears to be very similar.

I am so hyped to watch this now after reading this. Like unbelievably hyped. Touch is one of my favorites of all time.

This will be a joke compared to Touch but whatever I'll take it.

Durarara 01-03
So, this is like FLCL on a bigger scale and without the bite? Could be cool I guess. All the fake logos like Benny's and Yahaha are probably the funniest part of the show. Those and the surprise Holo in the first episode.
It's not really anything like FLCL. I don't really mean that in a good or a bad way, I just don't think there's much resemblance. In terms of design, direction, animation, music, plot, content and theme I feel that they're pretty different works.

Perhaps you could expand upon your original comment?

It's not even like they're doing it on purpose, they just don't think. I highlighted this earlier when I was talking about Red Garden.

The team I may let slide because usually the players are tan or some are black. But the audience part just irritates me.

but the brazilian football team is pretty brown/black or not?

There are at least three white guys in both of those pictures and some of the rest aren't even black they're just that Latino tan.

Kill Me Baby 1
This was surprisingly more entertaining than I thought it would be.

I feel bad not writing an 'anime canon' list that got beyond the 60's. I guess I could write one all that would go up until today but I was the last person to post in that thread anyway. I guess the discussion was somewhat too serious and highbrow for pretty much everyone on GAF.

They're very different, it just has a lot of things in it that feel very reminiscent of FLCL. There's the rumors about a girl on a bike (although everyone is blind and thinks its a guy in Durarara) with violent tendencies. There's this sensation that the main characters roam around the area they live and weird things spark from that. There's the desire from the main character for something big to happen in their lives. There are anti-education sentiments that seem to pop up. There's an element of the manipulation of humans by someone who is or seems like a higher power. And there's sort of a weird mysterious happening going on about the location. In FLCL it's the fires, in Durarara it's the joint suicides.

They just seem to touch on some of the same stuff. They're different, but lots of the stuff that goes on in Durarara just reminds me of FLCL.

You called it in that very thread, sadly. There aren't many anime fans who have the experience and perspective to be able to weigh in on that subject without simply listing their favorite shows. I would have contributed, but I myself feel underqualified on the subject.

That's not how you spell Class Rep

No one can spell her name because no one can remember her. Although I guess, this being Evangelion, even she is liked by a core group of fans. I suppose she's the closest to being 'the ideal Japanese women'. She's quiet, reliable, supportive, demure and good at that 'family stuff'. The series has no interest in such dull people.
Neon Genisis Evangelion - 09
You'd think you've seen it all until you watch synchronised mecha ballet fighting.
That whole sequence is just great, Evangelion clearly has something for everyone.
Neon Genisis Evangelion - 09
The notion of a mega bitch getting with the whiny, spineless crying jerk would have been absurd, but this is anime.
I do wonder why anyone ever bothered to finish watching this show. Let's look at the central trio of characters for a moment:

Shinji - Spineless, whiny coward.
Asuka - Loud, obnoxious and self-centred.
Rei - Emotionless and boring.

Who the hell would care what happens to these losers?

Thanks for explaining your original comment. I understand the connections you've made although personally I find those to be very broad themes and situations that exist across numerous works.

Perhaps it's just unusual to have a modern day, fairly grounded situation featuring teenagers that isn't some kind of romance or drama work.

What was this about? Is there a link to it?

I very much enjoyed the posts and would love to see anything else you have to say on the subject.

I must not have watched ToS of Star Trek in my adult life. While I knew there were good looking women on it, I never realized just how many there were. I'm tempted to take a break from anime and go watch it all.

Last, but not least, Uhura.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled anime discussion.

And I agree the direction they're going with Rei in the movies is interesting. I can't wait to see where 3.0 goes.
Well, I'm not really generous to call the direction they've chosen to travel in 'interesting' it's certainly different.

I wouldn't be afraid to post in thread due to being underqualfiied, that didn't stop anyone else. It's just that there were some really stringent requirements to contribute to the discussion. You had to come up with a list, based against several criteria, and then justify all your choices. As I said in the thread, that's a lot of work for anyone, let alone people making general comments on a forum.

fixed that for you go write that fucking thing now

Misato?

I actually feel like I could contribute to that, if only because I have seen a scary amount of anime in 20 years. I can think of some shows in certain genres that were game changers or otherwise just mainstreaming formerly niche ideas, but as for coming up with a list I would need quite a bit of time.

I wanted to do a good job, not a half-assed one.

Anyway, I hope you continue your historial look at the development of anime so we can all be enlightened by your wisdom.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes II - 01

This is a staple Cajunator show right there, sickly sweet looking moe characters for a main cast.

Nothing much to say from the first episode other than it felt like it's lost on where to take the show from the first season.

At least Class Rep hasn't been degraded thoroughly in all the spin-offs and merchandise that have come out over the years.
Sorry guys, I was totally wrong. I forgot that Anima, a.k.a the most ridiculous and exploitative Evangelion spin-off/faux sequel thing, exists and continues to spawn ever more crazy stuff. Every character is horribly degraded by being associated wiht it.
See? I suppose she gets off lightly:

You folks are going to form the smallest team. Then again, I guess there's team Ritsuko and team Maya to worry about.

Hikari is the genkiest genki in Evangelion. The power of Hikari compels you.

I like Hikari, she was the only likeable character in NGE.

Someone needs to kick Anno's dog in the balls or something so he'll get at least a little bit deppressed for 3.0. Ideally, the dude should just go downright suicidal. It can only help.

I like Hikari, she was the only likeable character in NGE.

She's too boring. And she was hardly a character.

Dear lord, Evangelion Anima has gotten EVEN worse than when I last glanced over it. It's like, the most amazing piece of terrible fan fiction that's somehow being produced by GAINAX.

It features:
mutliple simultaneous Rei's, including loli variants.

Their are various pictures of the main female cast as children, including Maya and megane-girl. Classy.

All the kids are grown up which means Shinji is now Kaiji and Asuka gets big breasts, of course.

The events of the 2nd impact happened, and now everyone is horrible fanservice bait on a level that would make SHAFT blush.

Did I mention the new plugsuits are open at various places to show lots of skin?

Kill Me Baby 01:

Boring from beginning to end. *yawn* One less show to worry about.

Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki 01:

Omg that cat is round and adorable and is fluffy and shit!! ^^;
