its a 640x480 camera - 0.3 megapixels. The idea that anyone is going to use it as an actual camera is crazy. The fact that IGN even compared it is insane. Its there for AR games and apps, maybe a quick snap to upload to twitter, or scanning barcodes etc.

but iphone 4s has better
sony
camera! And it is cheaper!

When they are both so poor, does it matter at all?

As has been mentioned, they're going to be used for AR a fair amount and in those cases light is crucial - hence why they're so saturated. Bought my daughter a 3DS last week and we couldn't get it to recognise reliably without a good even light source (Eyepet on the PS3 is like this too) so it makes sense that they would want to assist in the process as much as possible.

still better than the one in the vita in just about any situation.

except where you need low light/indoor use and fast frame rates for AR or in-game use. Oh look, like its designed to be.

If it was meant to take photos to print out and put on your wall, it'd have a higher megapixel camera.

Why would it.

I can't say why it isn't selling in Japan but I personally think what Sony is promising is amazing.

I will be able to buy PS Vita and the 16 GB memory card for less than 300€ which a good price at launch. The biggest games has already been announced for western audience Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Fifa, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Bioshock ... So I don't get why it isn't selling in Asia, are they waiting for some big titles or is the prize for the hardware too high.

and is shit in low-light
It's not great in low light, true, but it doesn't reasonably well. Here's a couple of quick shots I snapped with my 4S at night. These are pretty tough lighting conditions, actually, yet the results are sharper than the Vita is perfect lighting conditions. It produces fantastic pictures in daylight, however.

4S vs Vita in day light

I don't know about 4S, but iPhone 4 camera seems vastly superior to me compared to the one in Vita.
If the game had English language it would be a no-brainer for me. Did the demo on the Japanese PSN have English?
The one on HK PSN was in English IIRC.

Looks good. Does the shutter speed drop to get that though? Vita keeps up a surprisingly good framerate in poor lighting which is good for games.

It only drops significantly when there is little to no ambient light. In those conditions it still produces a reasonably smooth on-screen framerate.

The lighting conditions in which the framerate drops wouldn't be suitable for AR games anyways, so it doesn't really matter.

Why are you even comparing this?

The PS Vita is a video game console that is meant to play games. Its camera is meant for Augmented Reality. Case closed.

You want me to upload a picture of my brother's $2000 camera to compare to your iPhone? No? :)

I guess you haven't tried the 4S camera yet because it's fantastic. Even at night.

I'm not sure why people are comparing the two, it's no contest.

I also have a DSLR, though (not quite THAT expensive, though). We're comparing cameras on multi-function mobile devices, not actual cameras. The Vita is very much competing with smart phones and tablets at this point.

That said, the camera on the iPad 2 is quite awful and more comparable to the Vita, so there is that, but I still wish they would have included a better camera in the Vita. A low quality image will definitely have an impact on AR games. The 3DS cameras are so awful that it makes playing AR games difficult and ruins the magic (clear, jagged polygons against super grainy, ugly camera imagery). The Vita camera should have at least been capable of delivering a resolution closer to the Vita's screen resolution.

Never buy something based off promise.

I'll probably pick up a vita, but not at launch. Will need to see what the 2nd wave of games will be (presumably shown at e3).

why do people try to compare a phone camera , to a videogame system made to use ar and videocalls?
I've never seen people compare webcams or such to phones or digital cameras.

This could have been said about phones just a few years ago.

The Vita is not *just* a game machine.

I believe the second wave of games have already been announced.

- Assassins Creed, Vita
- Bioshock, Vita
- Call of Duty, Vita
- Killzone, Vita

But then we have also the obvious IP's that will come out every platform so long there is a user big enough user base

- EA sports
- Grand Theft Auto, Vita
- Final Fantasy, Vita
- Monster Hunter, Vita

But I'm hoping for new and unique IP's.

I think his point is valid though - its not like a smartphone, something you do everything well with - its picking its fights and focusing on gaming at the expense of other areas. It doesn't do text messages or calls for instance, and it doesn't have a camera that is expected to replace your compact.

I think Sony recognise that Vita owners are likely to have smartphones to do that, and the apps that you get on Vita are things like twitter, that you use quickly while still gaming, and then get back to gaming.

I get that, but the device is only $250.. You can't expect a top notch camera in a machine that's already alot more powerful than an iPad 2/iPhone 4S and expect it to be cheaper aswell. It's just not a fair comparison.. The good thing though, is the thing it's supposed to do (AR) it does with flair, with good image quality (for AR gaming anyway) in low light conditions and 60 frames per second. That has to count for something.

No it is not, but is not there to replace your phone or camera. In fact it is more game focused that psp was . These days taking casual pics, playing music or watching movies on the go are already covered. Sure vita can do that too in case you do not own anything like smartphone, mp3 player, tablet....

So, yeah it has a camera, for gameplay purposes. You can still take an ocasional picture if you wish to upload to twitter or facebook (those are automatically compressed and downsized ). It doesn't have a led flash either so , it is obvious that is not there to replace your camera (or phone for those who are ok with their quality instead of a decent camera).

ANd you are comparing a 600€ device vs a 250€ one.
Maybe ipod touch as someone said before would be a better comparison: Still photos max out at 960 by 720 pixels.lol. 3,5 screen. But if you already have a phone.... why would you buy an ipod touch? and why only compare camera? let's compare screen size, buttons, pad....

wow so It's a no buy for me.

I couldn't enjoy monster hunter because I have no friends, I won't waste money on another multiplayer-oriented game :((((((
You can do the same thing the characters in "Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai" did - try to make friends through MonHan. To be honest, it was an episode in that anime (and seeing a girl in the anime club I'm in playing MonHan 3rd) that made me buy the game in the first place.

Disgea 3 finally clicked with me and I started to enjoy it like I enjoyed the first one. Feels good.

One thing I really dislike about the Vita so far is how everything menu-based is touch ONLY. Why can't I navigate the Uncharted menus with the dpad and face buttons? Why can't I navigate my friends list with the analog stick (easier to hold down a stick than to flick up continously)? etc.

Unless I missed an option in the settings somewhere? I doubt it, though... pretty sure I checked everywhere.

It needs games. The nearest competitor to the Vita is the 3DS, and right now it has Monster Hunter, Mario Land, and Mario Kart available. The titles the Vita has simply aren't comparable.

If the game had English language it would be a no-brainer for me. Did the demo on the Japanese PSN have English?

I'd be wary of importing Gravity Daze/Rush anyways. There will be DLC, some of which will be levels IIRC.

Virtua Tennis 4 Gamekult.com Import Review

+ rather nice
+ the will to fully exploit the console
+ online part does the job

- too much floating
- not easy to cross
- the VT formula is getting old

6/10

Boo this review.

Just received my HK Wi-Fi Vita. Booted it up & entered in my HK account information only to be told that I would have to update in order to access the PSN. There's no way to skip the step so I just filled out generic BS in order to access the PSN.

But the system said I couldn't access the PSN until I updated. Wtf Sony?

Otherwise, pretty little system. Downloading some demos and going to buy some PSN point cards for the HK store later today.

I know Uncharted is in English but I'll wait for the domestic release. Any of the HK Monster Hunter's available in English?

Complaints? The usual ones. Main complaint being the jagged/heavy aliased icons on the home screen. Very noticeable, kind of jarring at first actually.

Hopefully when the novelty wears off they stop doing this shit.

I need help fellow importers....

So my memory stick finally came in the mail today, and I was excited to copy over the digital PSP games I have on my PS3 (still in the bubble). When I use the content manager to try and copy, the Vita says there are no applications available to move over. When I click on music and movies to move over, all my content is properly showing up. I believe I have the latest firmware as I am able to access the store on my PS3 and be connected, unless Sony rolled up non mandatory firmware updates.

Big question is, can I NOT play US PSP games on my JP Vita? What am I doing wrong? If I cannot copy over, this was a waste of an import and it'll be going up on Ebay immediately.... :(
