You can charge through USB. It may not appear to be charging (no indicator) but it definitely is.
Instruction manual says otherwise:
You can also charge your system by connecting it to a USB device such as a computer using the USB cable. When charging your system using a USB device, turn the power off completely. You cannot charge your system using a USB device while the system is in standby mode. To turn the power off completely, press and hold the power button for two seconds and then tap [Power Off] on the screen that appears.
And I'm pretty sure it really doesn't charge if it's not off.

The manual is wrong since I've only ever charged my Vita through USB.

Situations that it has charged:

a) While playing Monster Hunter. Played it for 11 hours straight (wifi enabled, online etc) and the battery remained at full.

b) In standby mode when I wasn't using it.

I didn't have to turn the system off completely.

Well, if what you're saying is true, and I don't think that you have any reason to lie, that one hell of an inaccuracy. They should change the manual and provide Vita users with a firmware upgrades in which there would be an indication that Vita's charging through USB even if it's not off.

Yeah I don't know why the manual is inaccurate. I never once assumed "USB Charge" would have special conditions attached to it, and it doesn't.

One "bug" I noticed though was when I had it plugged in with USB, the battery wasn't going up (but it also wasn't going down). I restarted it a few times and it jumped up, as if the indicator was frozen or something. That only happened once though.

BTW, I heard on the 8-4 Play Podcast that there is supposed to be a lightning indicator that it's charging? Never seen it.

As per manual, plugging into USB doesn't show the charging(which is why everyone assumed the manual claims were true). It shows the lighting indicator when plugged to the official charger.

That is pretty silly tbh. They have quite a few things to fix/change in firmware updates.

Since we're on the subject of the battery here, I will say that I am very delighted with it. I got something like 4 hours 20 minutes on MHP3rd (playing online via Adhoc Party) before I had to plug it in through USB. The Nyko battery/grip thing sounds insane if it really does boost it even more.

Lightning indicator is visible when you turn the Vita off, you don't need to connect it to the power adapter.

Oh, so you can use ad hoc party with the PSP games on Vita? That's some new info, I thought that because the Vita version of Lord of Apocalypse doesn't allow it other games (both PSP and Vita ones) are the same.

It's not on the UI though? I thought the battery bar would have a lightning icon over it or something.

There are two indicators - one is the lightning on the battery in the UI and the other one is the orange glowing PS button.

Oh I see. Never seen it in the UI. They should fix it for us USB champions.

I thought I read that usb only powered the system while on and that it didn't charge the battery unless it was off. I figured it was due to usb not providing enough power to do both

I was referring to the little lighting icon on the power-bar when charging is happening, not the glowing PS button.
That's the one that's not working when connected to USB with machine turned-on (even though apparently charging still happens).

You really think that? :<

Also, don't know if you've seen my post, Kyle, but yodobashi seems to offer a release date free delivery. I think it's cheaper than Tsutaya, but not as cheap as Amazon. Also, they have all the preorder bonuses for Ragnarok and Gravity Daze.

Just saw this, thanks for the heads up. They also offer points, so it seems like a no-brainer. Will test them out for a few games -- hopefully it goes well :D

Edit: How did you know they have the preorder bonuses? Don't see anything listed with Gravity Daze. Only found it with Tales of Innocence, where they say the preorder bonus isn't included (this might be a pretty limited bonus, not sure).

I thought that too when the bug I was talking about occurred where the bar wasn't moving up or down, but normally it does both.

Sad that Sony doesn't know how their own system works. Remember the account changing fiasco by the Sony rep?

I think the issue with not officially supporting USB charging probably has to do with different USB ports supporting different current (depends on the USB version of the port, the device laptop/desktop/etc, and the number of other devices connected). So basically results may vary and Sony decided to keep it simple and say it doesn't work.

Exactly this.

I was pretty sure it said that it includes the bonus, but I think I might have mixed it with your tweet. :P
Wanted to call them after reading your post but phone customer service is open until 8PM, so I'll do that tomorrow. It would suck if RO and GD didn't have the bonuses, since Yodobashi is one of the biggest retailers and both of those games have preorders limited to 1 copy per person.

i have high hopes for superstardust. I think sony should push PSN games much more for vita, it is the perfect 'arcade' machine for this kind of content: PSN/XBLA games should be released also for Vita. Games like Joe Danger/Trials HD, Shatter, Outland are the perfect fit imo

isnt that the same as with ipad? My ipad says it is not charging when i plug it into my laptop... but it does charge, just slowly.

pretty much.

The newer iphones and I pads do not charge via usb (or not as good), they changed how the wiring works.

For example, my 335i does not charge a newer itouch but it will charge an older ipod video BUT it will playback from both devices, they changed the wiring of how it charges (needing more power)

If iPhone 4 is considered new, mine charges just fine through the USB (and fast too).

Edit:
Lots of screenshots from Gundam Seed Battle Destiny Vita. Here's a taste (more at the link):

now that all games will be available digitally, Sony should have publishers commit to releasing games in all territories. If they hook up a great licensing deal then roll out physical cards, but if not they should release the digital version at least. If they aren't 'mainstream' enough for local markets, then put them in a separate section - like the PS1 japanese import section on PSN.

Is it over?! Did I miss this?

I'm not sure...I go to the live link and all i get is a black screen, although it says it is live. Not sure what is going on. I really want to see the game in action.

Edit: Hmm, now it says COMING SOON in giant letters. Maybe it starts in 20min? Even though it says it started at 12:30 PM EST which was about 45min ago.

I'm getting footage now! But... It's windows phone?! And seriously, this Engadget dude came dressed like that? Way to class it up dude...

why are people still buying PSPs!? 10k yen difference gets you a vita.
Many possible reasons but I think the lack of an UMD drive and therefore the lack of easy access to a cheap library of used and old games has something to do with it.

Exactly what I was thinking - wth is up with that?

because it's not really a 10k difference - throw in the need for at least a low cost card and a game and the lowest barrier for entry is actually closer to 32k

But let's say 10k difference - i'm pretty sure i could get at least 20 -great- (UMD) games for that. That's ignoring the YARR SHIVER ME DOWNLAODS! angle.

(and that 20 games could easily include every MH on the PSP)

I've actually been scanning for UMD bargains and the shelves are PACKED with them.

BATTERY MOANING :
Specifically MH3rdP
There's no simple indication of what your battery - you have to drop out of the PSP game and into the menu. However, because you suspend the game this cuts the wifi connection so if you are playing multiplayer it drops you.

Okay , it's fairly minor - but worth mentioning.

That's sad to hear, was really looking forward to it, in fact it was in my top 3 to buy. Quick question, how 'far' are you in it? Also you said it seems to not go 'anywhere', do you mean it's just the same repetitive elements for each stage? or more along the lines of nothing changes with the gameplay?

will have to go back and check - 3rd or 4th boss?

The level design doesn't really change, whilst i though the opening levels were just to edge you in, it turns out that so far that's pretty much the level design template. The main gripe is that there's just not much tactically going on (as per the review posted from the website).

Lastly would you compare this more to pikmen or overlord? (Not the art/ style but the progression in the game)

hmm - pikmen. But a very limited pikmin.

I bought umvc3.

Question: is just the menus hat are in English or can the text be changed too?

If so how do you do it?

Also anyone who wants to play hit me.

I'm sure this has been answered in here before, but can someone explain the cross-game-chat feature to me? Is it actually what Sony told us it was going to be "Voice chat with anyone no matter what game they're playing" or is it true that some games (I think Uncharted was mentioned) simply forbid it?

Thanks in advance.

Sony lied (again). You can only use it in games that don't disable networking. Looks like devs can freely disable it in games that don't use the internet, so don't expect single-player games to work over Party.

Terrible.

Just took a spin through the PS Vita store, and gawd damn...the software is very expensive to me. The lowest priced real game is the equivalent of $50 and it goes as high as $70-$80. And these e-store prices are supposed to be discounted from the retail versions?!?

No wonder Japan is giving it the cold shoulder...

Where do you live for games to cost that much? Australia? In North America games are $30-$50 at retail.
