Code Geass Ep. 25

Wow, if I had been watching this while it was airing, I would be pretty pissed with an ending like that. Well, I think's that enough crazy for tonight.

Code Geass actually stopped airing at ep23. The last two episodes were delayed because they ran out of progamming time, and we waited months before they found a one hour slot to air the actual conclusion. I think that's even worse. Lol.

I'll agree their characterization is different and that's mainly why I like Madoka much more than Kenshi (although I did like Kenshi initially). My main point is that having a happy-go-lucky lead and who is good at everything can get annoying very fast if not handled properly. This is mainly because there seems to be a disconnect between the scale and responsibilities of their actions. That's somewhat why I like Shinji even if he takes it to the extreme.
Ah, point taken and I agree. I just don't think the comparison was apt, and we probably still disagree on that.

True, she's not as god-tier as Kenshi was but she's still very exceptional at pretty much everything we've seen her do. The only time we saw her lose was in that Kendo match but her opponent was extremely good in that the captain's won multiple tournaments.
I have to say I got a different perception of her skills and attribute that to the quality direction. Her participation in all sporting events only tells me she's pretty talented but not enough to assume she's as exceptional as you say. The lack of writing regarding that is brilliant for me.

Either way I have a feeling that this will be a non-issue in regards to perfection in the next episode as she'll be in trouble and need someone else to bail her out. However I'm just hoping they don't limit her personality to the genki girl aspect.
I think it's been a non-issue since the beginning although that's probably because of my interpretation so far. I don't think she's been that perfect.

I don't really understand why they'd pick up Galaxy Express 999, a show no-one has heard of. Moreover I really don't understand why it's a disc release - the show is a 112 episodes long, they're just looking to lose money on something like that. If they were putting it up for streaming that might be a different matter.

Lots of people have heard of galaxy express. They are more likely to spend money on it as well since more of them are older and have disposable income.

Rinne no Lagrange 2 - With this episode, this show shows itself more clearly as a generic mecha series, standard for the genre in every way except for the gender of the lead character. I mean, apart from having a female lead, does this series do anything different at all?

I'm sure for mecha series fans that might be enough to draw interest, but I've never been a mecha fan, so though I do like it when animes have female leads, I don't see myself actually finishing this series. I would guess I'll lose interest and stop watching at some point, as I almost always do with mecha shows.

I mean, the episode was fine, but it was ... so averagely mecha. Oh, and the fanservice is back of course. So why does most of Madoka's costume (everything except for the dress part) turn invisible? Just so her skin can be exposed, I assume? That's just kind of stupid.

As for the episode, I agree that it's annoying that the fight wasn't in this episode. It's not like the plot of the episode was nearly as interesting as, say, Bodacious Space Pirates' second episode, either... and of course, the mecha only works when she believes? Why are they always this way... silly mecha designers, making them only work by the power of heart is a design flaw! :p

Pretty much tried out everything this season that looked interesting, save for BRS TV, but that's still a while out, so might as well give these some impressions now:

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Second Season: Actually slightly disappointed in this one. The first episode contained a running gag that ran the entire episode- far too long when the joke stopped being funny the first 2-3 times. And it seems the girls have once again lost/forgotten their Toys and their desire to become detectives, which feels essentially like the writers are putting that aspect of the show on the backburner or using it yet again as a plot device for the girls. Hopefully the series quickly shapes up back to the wonderful mix of action/short gags/awesome animation that was abound in the first season or it'll be painful being forced to write off a series that holds such charm.
I agree, the first episode of season two was somewhat disappointing, considering how good the first season was (and it was quite good). I mean, it was amusing at times, but it wasn't as good as Milky Holmes often was in the first season, and the apparent plot reset was kind of frustrating as well. Hopefully it gets better.

Kill Me Baby: Girl who is best friends with another girl who is also happens to be an assassin. The humor was rather disjointed and the pacing was erratic. Which is odd as the 4koma was rather amusing, so this definitely looks like a situation of things being lost in translation to the moving screen. The OP is catchy though in its own way, and apparently one can dance to the ED if one is so inclined.
You thought that the manga is better, really? I think that it's pretty similar to the manga, and the problem just is that the manga wasn't that great to begin with... it's moderately amusing sometimes, but often stupid and mediocre. The manga's the same way.

Moretsu Pirates: The most promising show of the season. In a far-flung future where humanity has spread out across the stars, long-standing conflict has existed between the Galactic Empire and the frontier worlds. In order to stand against their overwhelming odds, the frontier worlds have adopted a policy of legalizing piracy. The main character is a strongly independent young high school girl with so far none of the obvious foils of her kind. The story is light-hearted, while still maintaining good pacing and action. Pretty much the best thing about the series is despite the collection of standard characters, the show has yet to go for any of the usual tropes but instead actually uses the cast to interesting effect. Plus Marika has an awesome mom.
Yeah, this is the best new series so far this year, I agree. It's a good series, and so much fun to watch. I love the tone and feel of the series, too.

I do think that the MC has some of the usual traits you'd expect, though -- the maid cafe thing, the "questionably smart (see how long it has taken her to really understand her situation; I know it'd be really surprising, and her reaction is understandable, but she is a bit foolish about it.) but good at leadership. I definitely do like her character overall, but she's not entirely different.

A for tropes... ep. 1 had some (maid cafe?), but both parts of ep. 2 were different for sure, yes. It's not just another entirely cliche anime, it's something more interesting than that.

Rinne no Lagrange: The other show about an independent young high school girl who is thrust into a situation where she has to become the most vital part of her hierarchical circle- just add mecha. While the mecha designs are pretty nice, and the music is not bad, the story itself is rather slow in pacing and frankly... not really all that interesting. By now we already know what to expect in such shows where the unassuming HS girl becomes the most important character, and there are at least three of such shows this season alone. The problem is Lagrange seems to stick too hard to the standard formula, thus making it completely un-noteworthy. Though the intro suggests potentially interesting future developments, it's a question of whether the viewer will be willing to stick around long enough to see them unfold. But at least the OP is the prettiest and most colorful OP in a long time.

Eh, this show is alright, but I'm already losing interest. As I say above though, part of the problem is just that mecha just isn't one of my favorite genres... and yeah, the story so far's really generic, as is the action, plot, and fanservice. I agree, it's simply too generic. The only thing it does differently at all is having a female lead, and while that's something, it's not enough to hold my interest through a series when otherwise it's entirely generic.

Ano Natsu de Matteru: The most anticipated show of the season, and it doesn't disappoint. Take the artist and writer of the Onegai series coupled with the director of AnoHana and the result is a pure romantic comedy/drama reminiscent of a time when such things could still be awesome. With a premise that is essentially Onegai Teacher: The Remake, one can definitely see that J.C. Staff pulled out all the stops in making this series tug on the nostalgia strings of viewers of series. From putting I've Sound in charge of the music, to having the opening song emulate the musical themes of the original series, to even recreating the key characters that exemplified the original Onegai Teacher (and in Lemon's case, using the same seiyuu as well!), they made it clear what their objective was. For those who enjoyed those series, it's akin to stepping into a time warp. The easiest complaint that could be levied against the series is that it does nothing new, and is a pitiful attempt at using a blueprint 10-years old in order to replicate its success for the new generation... but who cares? For the old, it's a type of storytelling that has been too long forgotten, and for the new, it is a chance to finally see how the genre is meant to be done.
Uh, I really disliked both Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins, so I'm far from sure I want to watch this show...

Come now, her motivation is clearly to follow out a request from a comrade. You know, it was all explained in the first episode! Then that naturally grew into
saving the earth
, or something.

I guess that makes her closer to a Super Robot protagonist in that she has less motivation to be doing what she's doing.

What's there to not understand about her motivations? They're made quite clear in the second episode, as it's a major focus of the episode. Indeed, the show got her requisite mental breakdown over whether she wants to be a mecha pilot or not over quickly. I wonder if it'll return at some point, or whether it's simply gone now? Eh, either way, it was certainly a pretty predictable plot point, and the setup for some average manufactured drama as well.

Rinne no Lagrange 1-2

The pacing of this has been kind of odd, especially with the lack of exposition. It's hard to care about random robot fights when you don't know anything about the setting or who these people are. Something aliens and protect earth and jersey club? The protagonist just seems dim witted right now. The show looks good and episode 1 had that suplex, but beyond that there hasn't been anything compelling.

You're right that the pacing is a bit odd, but there's not really that much to have to understand, I think. The show isn't too deep so far, though that certainly could change later, who knows. I mean, it has some layers, but it's all fairly predictable, or so it seems at the moment (it is only two episodes in after all, you never know). The main character is in a club (where she's probably the only member?) where she joins various sports teams for short periods of time when they need the help, and generally helps people in distress as well, so seeing her decision at the end of ep. 2 wasn't exactly suspenseful... I mean, yeah, they sent you out there without telling you anything, but that whole ting about the robot not working unless her mindset was different was so generic and so stupid... oh well.

The show makes it pretty clear she's piloting the Vox Aura because it shot her in the ass when she was drowning 10 years ago and she remembers that she's more or less bound to it, and it to her now. Though she wasn't privy to the conversation, when they were talking about it in the control room, they specifically said that once "Memoria" is established between Vox and pilot, only that person can pilot it from that point forward.

I get some Xenoglossia vibes from the relationship that Madoka has with her giant robot. I'm guessing this robot won't be Madoka's boyfriend though.

Yup, agreed on all points.

You're missing the point. What is the reasoning/motivation for why Madoka agrees to pilot it in the first place, not why she can pilot it.

Because her thing is helping people, so she's helping these people too, just in a job (sport) with slightly higher stakes. I mean, that's why that scene of her saving that drowning person at the beginning was there, I think: to show her attitude and explain why she'd be willing to help.

i just had to see how bad it could get... i don't think it was worth it.

Yeah, I would imagine it isn't.

You're insane. Ano Natsu de Matteru has the potential to be the best show this season.

How so? If you don't mind my asking.

R.I.P, Haly.

Where did you get this godawful idea? The best show this season is about mech pilots in skirts.

No way, not even close, as I just said in my review of Rinne no Lagrange above.

He's not perma'd, is he? It looks like EviLore himself banned him in the theist thread.

I hope it's not a perma, then...

This is why you stay the fuck away from religion related threads.

Yeah. I mostly agree with Branduil, in that thread, but I don't really want to maybe be banned, so I think I'll stay away... as I always do for religion threads, in part for that reason indeed.

I will probably watch more of Listen to Me, Girls. I Am Your Father! than shows about pirates this season.

Well if the writer and director get their shit together, and remotely come close to the quality of OT we could have something very special, even if it is predictable.

Hmm. Well the first episode didn't really grab me at all but I guess we'll see. As of now though, I'm thinking Toradora was just a fluke.

And the word trolling gets tossed around so often nowadays it feels like it's lost all meaning.

Toradora a fluke? It's around the same quality as Anohana!

I just realized I never watched episode 24 and 25 of CG. So just watched 22-24. About to start 25. It's glorious.

Oh and Funimation's Sekirei Pure Engagement ad isn't half bad either.

WTF now Haly's banned too? They're picking us off one by one!

Kill me Baby 2: I chuckled here and there but for the most part this a pretty dull 4koma adaptation for me. Might give it one more episode.
Yeah, pretty much.

Milky Homies S1 + S2 ep 1: Sometimes, just sometimes the current JC Staff manages to make a show that's actually fun to watch. This was one of them. I actually laughed a lot at the shear stupidity and inanity of many of the scenes. Anything involving Twenty and his extremely pointy nipples and Cordelia's insane rampages was gold to name a couple things. JC Staff really should do more straight comedies with no fluff.
So do you agree that the first ep of S2 was somewhat disappointing compared to much of the first season, or not? (Also, did you watch the OVA episode released between seasons one and two?)

I love females in anime. I just don't want them to be retarded moe tropes. Females who act like females in real life are super cool.
Entirely true, anime females really are just collections of stupid, oversexualized tropes, almost all of the time, and it really is a problem. It's like that because most anime is for a male audience and teh female characters exist for wish fulfillment, but understanding why it is doesn't make it any less troubling or sad.

My issue with moe is that every female is hypersexualized in one form or the other, and serve very little purpose other than to give the viewer a boner. Now, I'm not against boners, but it would be nice to see some strong, empowered females in anime once in a while, instead of being totally helpless and criminally stupid.
I do have to disagree a bit about moe in particular, though, as cajun was saying -- moe in particular isn't always about sexualization, really. Or rather, even though it is, a lot of the audience doesn't see it that way, and there are somewhat valid cases to be made either way on the issue. Overall I do think they are sexualized, yes, but to very different degrees depending on which show you're talking about. Like, I don't think something like K-On was entirely designed to be as you say. "cute" and "sexy" aren't the same thing.

Does that mean that the characters weren't designed to attract the male audience, though? No, it doesn't, and that many people do take their fandom in that direction makes it easy to see why you'd say something like that. But I do think that you go too far, that just isn't entirely true. There's more than enough negative sexual stereotyping going on in anime without having to go that far.

I most certainly agree that there are far too few strong female characters in anime, though. It's definitely sad. And the ways that anime females almost never act like humans, but instead just like collections of stereotypes... that's worse. (And yes, male characters have this issue too, certainly, I am not ignoring the fact that they have their own collection of stupid stereotypes. The ones about females are worse most of the time though.)

TTGL's Yoko is hypersexualized to a ridiculous degree, but at least she remains a strong, empowered female despite the fact that she fights wars in a bra and panties.
I haven't watched that show, but certainly prefer that kind of female character to the ones that are modestly dressed but act like weak pushovers. I often probably do focus more on character sexualization than costume, though both are relevant certainly.

It is akin to a crime to have not watched it already, just so you know!
(Sora no Woto) Yeah, pretty much.

B-But it seems rather... imposing.
Nowhere else will you find such a wretched hive of scum and villainy?
Somewhat, but it's also a lot like the anime threads. Or should that be an "and" instead of a "but"? :p

They both have the problem of slow progression, but at least Pirates has the more amusing cast at the moment. But they're both interesting shows, and it's good to see people are enjoying Lagrange, because it doesn't seem to be getting as much love at the moment, which it should!

I think you like Lagrange a bit more than me then. I mean, it's decent to good, but Pirates is clearly better.

I agree with everything you've said about these two series, except that you got them backwards. Bodacious Pirates is the one that's slow and boring and dull and shit.

I assume you're a mecha fan then...

So I was reading earlier that Sato Tatsuo has said there will be no romance in either Lagrange or Pirates, but rather they will focus on friendships. Wtf, I mean these shows seem like perfect opportunities for some heavy yuri romance.

Romance doesn't even happen in anime that are in the romance genre.

For everyone who's been ADHD in this thread wanting for something to happen right away, I went ahead and read a few chapters ahead in the manga. I-I-I wasn't d-d-doing it for you guys or anything! I-I-I just wanted to know what happened next! It couldn't be helped! Idiots.

Anyways, judging from how they've adapted the story so far, I expect something should happen the next episode, or the one after that depending on how much they will cut. Oh yes, they have been cutting things deemed unnecessary in the anime to speed things up. Believe it or not, this pace is actually faster than what I've seen in the manga so far.

Pretty enjoyable episode. I must be a sociopath or something, because I usually find myself thinking Yuki is a worse person than Yuno.
He's pretty much throwing her to the wolves at the end of the episode. At least she never tries to kill him.

Aquarion 17

Isn't it too late for filler type episodes like this? And was it just me, or was the art really off? Got flashbacks to TTGL 4.

Also, that ending was plain wat.

I thought the second episode was pretty straightforward but two episodes without mecha, titts or moe is maybe too much for some people here

Maybe it's just me but I really don't think it's a good idea to take health tips from a crazy old man living alone in a fucking mountain. Please tell me there are more of these hilarious PSA's to look forward too.
