Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I don't lilke JRPG, specially combat system, specially when enemies appears from nothing. I think it's an old concept technology and I cannot understand why are some japanese companies still using it when they shouldn't do beyond 16 bits games. Turn based games have no sense except for some kind of game which tries to emulate some kind of board game (chess, bloodbowl, etc..) but not for a deep game.
So I don't like alla Final Fantasy games Tactics or RPG, similars.

Ocarina of Time is the worst console Zelda

None CD-i, yes

I think the opinions my friends make fun of me the most for having are:
- Final Fantasy XIII is one of the best games this generation.
- Skyrim is a bad video game.
- Japanese games are constantly innovating and coming up with new and fun things.
- Western games have been stagnant for the last few years, and outside of a few outliers, there is very little innovation and freshness. It's all rehashing the tried and true "AAA" formula.
- Video game stories, on paper, are not as good as a book. But with the interactive and visual aspects, video game stories in general are better than stories in other mediums.
- Online gaming is the worst thing to happen to consoles this generation.
- The PSP is the best console, by far, this generation.

Hey, who let my clone out?

- The Last Remnant is wonderful and the best JRPG released this gen.
- Final Fantasy VI was the last truly great game to come out in that series.
- Skyrim doesn't deserve half of the praise it receivred, and The Witcher 2 is easily the better RPG. It's not even close.
- As much as I wanted it, Mega Man Legends 3 would have almost certainly bombed, and probably would have sucked anyway.

The latest Final Fantasy games (XI - XIII-2) have done away with the random battles. But yeah, it's an archaic, outdated mechanic that really shouldn't be used in this day and age.

Elder Scrolls are boring

I tried playing Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. I got caught up in the hype and how the "new one" is so much better than the old one twice now. Didn't like any of them.

It seems that mostly anyone with a Japanese style avatar of an obscure Japanese game tends to have the same opinion about western gaming and Japanese gaming in general.

This is an unspoken truth about this forum.

PC gamers who play stuff lilke ArmA 2 and strategy games are a lot smarter than the average gamer.

That's because nerds play those games. Nerds are usually smarter and better educated than most of the common gaming peasants.

Skyrim is boring.

All that work creating a beautiful open world and Bethesda couldn’t fix the most glaring fucking problem with Oblivion; the terrible combat.

How people complain about the amount of text and cutscenes in the last Zelda and prefer actual RPGs with even more text, numbers management, and cutscenes, baffle me.

but okay

I don't get why zombies are popular, they're just boring, ugly disfigured humans who want to eat you. As villains they don't have character or motivations... they can't even speak! did I mention they're ugly?

If I'm going to destroy soulless, voiceless enemies, robots >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> zombies.

Bingo. (My opinion is not that black and white, though)

Shadow of the colossus was a boring and bland video game. It was a technical mess that could barely keep like 20 FPS, there was very little gameplay, a huge empty open world for no reason filled with nothing, a couple boring and repetitive boss fights with only a few really awesome ones.

Well I wouldn't call it straight shit, it was no where near the "pinnacle of gaming achievement" that a lot of people try and pass it off as.

Halo and Bioshock bored me to tears.

Speaking of first person games: They all suck.

I hated Wind Waker, worst Zelda ever. I'm afraid to play the DS entries. It was so boring. The sailing killed it. The characters, i had no interest in.

The Nintendo DS was crap. Dual screens? Touch? WTF?! No, how about a Gameboy with 4 face buttons, 2 shoulder buttons, color backlit screen, the Gameboy Advance was so close to perfect Nintendo! Why did you not keep going in that direction and improve it! Gah! Super Nintendo, portable, with killer screen. Dumbasses. 3DS is a little better in terms of feel, but touch and dual screens, Grr!

The only reason to get an Xbox is for multiplayer with friends. It has no system seller exclusives. All the good games are multiplatform. Fire Pro Wrestling on Arcade where you at?!

I can't believe anyone would waste money on iOS/Android/Phone games. You guys are all loons.

I love the Wii! Best System this generation. I don't use the motion controls if I have a choice. Classic Controller Pro, Gamecube, or Wiimote.

I hate the Playstation and Xbox controllers. Too. Many. Buttons. How the fuck do I remember what all these fucking buttons do? Thus, why Wii is my favorite system this generation.

Oh boy, that was a doozy. Feeling better now.

Man, seems like a lot of people don't really Half Life 2.

I don't know if I really have any super controversial opinions about games, but here's a couple that might be:

Mario 64 has aged horribly. It was great at the time, but going back now the levels seem very simplistic.

The series has lost a ton of appeal since 64 by losing the cool secrets. I remember the first time a friend showed me Bowser's Back Door and Star Road, it totally blew me away. Finding all the secrets in Marios was a huge part of the game, and that's mostly gone now. NSMB had some stuff like that, but the coins were pretty lame, you were collecting them just for the sake of collecting them, and the levels with multiple exits were super obvious. In fact, in the DS game you just beat the bosses as Mini Mario. I still liked Sunshine and love the Galaxies, but the series has lost a huge part of its initial charm.

I wouldn't compare it to the Galaxies, but Rayman Origins is a much, much better game than either NSMB. It's pretty different from 3D Land too, but after playing Rayman, 3D Land so unimaginative and amateurish. It feels like the Marios were someone just kind of randomly tossing obstacles around while Rayman levels are meticulously designed to show you what are basically "racing lines" that let you constantly run through the levels without losing momentum.

I love DLC. I think some of it is exploitative but with some work it could be a wonderful thing. I've been playing Gears 3 and there's a ton of weapon skin packs that costs a few bucks. I've seen a ton of people using the skins, so obviously people are buying them. I really, really like the idea of offering cosmetic things like that at a premium. If more developers/ publishers would follow Valve's lead and make the base game cheaper or free, or offer free add-ons, it'd be great.

That may be wishful thinking, but DLC is awesome right now as long as you're patient. I've been looking for a 360 RPG and I'm going to get either Dragon Age or Fallout 3, both of which are currently $20 new on Amazon and come with a few expansion packs each. Dragon Age comes bundled with an expansion that initially cost $30 as a standalone purchase. It's an awesome business model where everyone wins; people who have to have the newest game Day 1 can shell out $60 for the game and another $60 for the various add-ons, people who wait get a ton more content then they would have otherwise for a very low price.

Also, I almost didn't include this since it seems like a pretty common sentiment in this thread, but the God of War games are pretty garbage. Ninja Gaiden is still ridiculously superior to any other action game if you're willing to learn it, and Bayonetta offers a lot more freedom in comboing and a much wider variety of attacks and weapons if you want something more hack-and-slashy. So does Devil May Cry, but Bayonetta is the better game imo. On higher difficulty levels God of War is just rolling around fitting in a couple of light attacks whenever you can. I remember the first time I played 3 how jarring it was seeing the amazing graphics paired with the same old simple gameplay.

i like videogames

i think videogames are fun

What have you done.

Mario 64 has aged horribly. It was great at the time, but going back now the levels seem very simplistic.

I think it aged 'okay' in respect to it being a) Nintendo 64 title (everything from this generation aged terribly), and b) the first real 3D platformer that really made 3D gaming what it is today. And it plays well enough, which is really an issue for a lot of older 3D games; the controls.

Wow, wtf, this is not even about gaming. Also, really really?? That accusation makes me kinda furious, ya know. But yeah, I'll send a note to all the popular people who have spoken about liking the show and telling them they are gateway pedo. Guttertrash.

Pah. Amateurs. We Pokemon fans are full-blown paedos, apparently. Step your game up, Bronies.
smh

Anyway, my offerings...
  • Outside of threads dealing with facts and appreciation threads, talking about Nintendo on GAF is a totally pointless pastime. Yeah, overt fanboys are bad, but the sheer amount of vitriol this company gets for not ploughing the same furrough as the HD consoles makes reasoned discussion about the company close to worthless.
  • Skyrim's PS3 release should be a company-breaking scandal; if any other industry had a company ship significantly over a million copies of fundamentally broken product without outlet for fixing the break, then there would be outrage in the media. There would certainly NOT be product of the year awards thrown at the product from every direction. What Bethesda has done with PS3 is verging on fraud, and it speaks volumes about gaming's immaturity as a pastime that it hasn't been a bigger issue.
  • Skyward Sword is the second best Zelda ever made, nestling behind Wind Waker. It would also be a lot worse without it's more sedate introduction.
  • The inability of third parties to capitalise on the enormous userbase attracted to the Wii is one of the gravest mistakes the modern industry has made, and it is one which will come back to bite traditional gaming hard in future.
  • Saint's Row 3 is superior to any GTA game.
  • The latest Pokemon games are empirically the best in the series in every aspect except that of nostalgia on behalf of the player.
  • While story does help in building the game experience, it is very close to the bottom of the list of gaming essentials.
  • Shadow of the Colossus is an almost perfect game nearly ruined by a stupid, stupid ending.

Oh, and
  • Anyone accusing a fan of a specific franchise of paedophilia simply due to liking that series needs to have a long, hard look at what that says about their maturity and psyche.

The lack of Black protagonists in video games is deplorable. In fact, the lack of any protagonists that counter the lily white demographics of its developer base is deplorable.

Bungie isn't good at making games from a technical standpoint. Halo 2-ODST were graphically sub-par. When they tried to fix the problem with Reach, their engine ran at an abysmal 20ish fps.

These are like the best opinions in the entire thread.

And that's an objective fact :D :D

I hate a lot of modern gaming in general and where it is going, I've reverted to a great appreciation of older consoles and games. Best part is I'm having fun.

How people complain about the amount of text and cutscenes in the last Zelda and prefer actual RPGs with even more text, numbers management, and cutscenes, baffle me.

but okay

Well as far as western rpgs go there's not really a lot of text other than lore stuff. It's pretty much all voiced now. Not a lot of cutscenes in them either.

I used to complain about it because it scrolled soooo slow and the writing was so...I can't think of a better word here...but childish I guess. There was never anything meaningful or deep, it was just 1 goofy looking character spouting nonsense and you usually could not skip out of it.

edit: Oh you said the last zelda. Can't comment on that but going from what you said it doesn't seem to have changed much from other Zeldas.

That's because nerds play those games. Nerds are usually smarter and better educated than most of the common gaming peasants.

I don't think that's true anymore. I imagine gaming nerds playing stuff like Vanquish, VVVVV, Mother 3, and NSMB.

PC gamers who play ArmA and strategy games tend to be older people who know what they like already and don't feel the need to nerd out all over the medium.

Nerds aren't smarter than the average person, they are more obsessive. Then again, the average person is a huge sports nerd, so it's probably just something men tend to do.

edit: I think more intelligent people would be drawn to ArmA type games and strategy games because they are more intellectual in nature. Every action requires thought into the short- and long-term consequences, as well as a deeper understanding of the mechanisms at play.

"3d zelda games have a slow opening, insufferable companions that spoil the puzzles, repeated bosses, it's linear and segmented, the plot makes no sense and is full of forced emotion and quirkiness, the interface is clunky, and the combat slows down the game. it just relies on quirky arstyles and being a sacred cow.

"okami? i LOVE okami! zelda needs to be more like okami."

KILLZONE [PS2] is easily my favorite in the series and securely in my top ten lifetime.

The Gabe weight and Itagaki complexion digs always bum me out.

Playing a game on PC in 2560x1600 16xAF , 16xMSAA and Ubersampling, doesn't make the game more fun.

I agree but games that are a blurry/jaggy mess or a sub 30 frame rate are inherently less fun because the technical problems take away from the experience.

You guys really believe Mario Sunshine is the best 3D mario? I really need to see your reasoning for that.

I thought it wasn't fun, at all. Which is a shame for a mario game.

Okay, but what's your reasoning? Or is your reasoning just that? I thought the Fludd gameplay was really fun and unique for a Mario game.

There, I just basically mirrored your statement without providing any real reasoning for why I enjoyed it. Nor should I need to, because much like the same lines of your thinking, I don't understand what's not to like about Super Mario Sunshine.

Insert the idea about Mario Galaxy being re-released with a different name and character, cue the reactions: "This is the kind of brilliant, fresh, original, game Nintendo forgot how to make long ago! Bravo!"
