Fairy Tail 46
It's Not|Gerard!
Besides how anti-climatic the first fight ended, wasn't that bad seeing Erza going Unlimited Blades Work here.
Also, I liked how her new armor looks like something from a Dynasty Warriors game.

I have to congratulate you guys. Multiple people watching School Days, Code Geass, and Arjuna is like 8 simultaneous trainwrecks. I don't know if we've ever caused such an impressive clusterfuck of schadenfreude before.

And, you know, it's nice to not be the lab rat for once.
Haly's only gone for a little bit, enjoy your freedom while it lasts.
I hate to admit it but I still haven't watched Geass. :<

I was thinking of watching the Haruhi movie and K-On!! after this "experience" but now...

No shame in admitting it, but you should correct that. In the near future. Soon. Like now. And don't read spoilers!

They go to college btw.

Telepathic Anti-abortionist Arjuna 9

I've just spent the last 10 minutes staring at my keyboard and I honestly just don't know what to write about this...... Holy shit, why is this even a thing?

No shame in admitting it, but you should correct that. In the near future. Soon. Like now. And don't read spoilers!
Yeah, i'll watch get around to it eventually

They like cake.

SPOILERS. :(
how could you ;_;

Princess Tutu 22

I expected the show to take a weird crazy turn but even then I still wasn't ready for this. Also it's Fakir's story all along now?

School Days 1

Might as well see what the fuss is about. First ep seemed normal enough.

So glad that moment is in the first 48 episodes, meaning, Ill see the climax of my second favorite arc dubbed.

Just reached that arc in my reread of Fairy Tail.

Brain Powerd 4

My old nemesis hamburger, you appear again.

Along with your comrade in arms, hot dog.

In the future, only midgets can build scooters.

Seriously, what is this?

Pretty boring episode about Yuu going to his old house and that dumb girl from Orphan who can't decide whether to join him or not. Her life sucks because:

The show actually implies she has memories of her parents arguing before she was even born and her father telling her mother to get an abortion because he thinks the father is someone else. Okay.

Yeah that pretty much sums up the experience of watching a Tomino show.

The episode ends with oddly inappropriate dramatic music and TOMATOES.

I think I will pass on this recent trend of watching terrible shows.

Anne of Green Gables 33

This episode had a darker color palette than usual. Part of that was due to it being mostly set at nighttime, but it also tied into two story elements: a small rift that opened up between Anne and Diana, and the fear of imminent death that Anne briefly entertained. Her dark mood was reflected by the world around her.

Anne's character design has started to get noticeably older, which is very appropriate for an episode where she is starting to consider her future schooling and career.

The last image we see is this:

I may be reading too much into it, but I like to see it as the black clouds of Anne's fears being banished by the white stars of hope and resolve that she came to after deciding to work towards entering Queen's.

Oh, and much of this episode was original! This show has gotten a lot better in inserting its own material into that of the novel in a way that feels natural.

Code Geass R2 Ep. 06

They managed to go a whole season and five episodes without resorting to a CGI ship. Oh well, the 2D mecha action was great and made up for it, plus it's not like the series has been completely CGI free.
The Guren Mk-II getting wings was just about as awesome as when the Gurren Lagann got its wings. Plus that new arm. :O So badass.

Princess Tutu 26:
I thought that ending was a bit rushed. While I didn't get the expected revenge against Drosselmeyer I was more disappointed by how the epilogue was crammed in the last three minutes. I guess it parallels actual fairy tales pretty well -usually, the ending only encompasses a sentence ("...and they lived happily ever after"). Tutu hints at a continuation, but said bait feels more like a homage to the stories it drew from than an actual promise for the fans.

In the end, it may be effective. Tutu's strongest point is that, despite the reuse of animation and story structure, it never feels like a retread because it only tells what needs to be told in order to serve the story. I come back to the episode with Meowzinsky's shoes getting shredded: a lesser animu would have crammed an extra scene somewhere where Mytho would have confessed or a new pair of shoes had been crafted, and that would have been shallow. Despite the fairy tale imagery (or perhaps because of it), Tutu often drives across a point of inevitability. The story has to keep moving forward, as Ahiru herself wanted, even if we can never be privy of the actual happenings after its ending.

P.S. If your eyes didn't water up when duck!Ahiru started dancing then you are a Scrooge.

Princess Tutu FIN: This show exemplifies everything I like about anime as a story-telling medium. It's not like it has anything that automatically puts it a level above literature, music, or cinema, but at the very least it shows a playfulness to classical material that I can seldom find in other entertainment media. It was vibrant in both character interaction and visual spectacle, and the music and setting were regal and (if you may pardon the cliché) epic, all veiled behind a pretense of a simple love story about a duck who wanted to be a girl.

If I had to summarise Tutu in a sentence I would say "it's a sincere work about something, and even if there are heart-jerking moments it never feels manipulative"*. Contrast it with School Days (which for some reason everyone started watching now), which is a very well made
tragedy (where you wish for the hero to fuck off)
that pulls the viewer specifically through various moods
(most of them on the homicidal section of the feelings spectrum)
, and you may conclude that Tutu is a type of antithesis for such works. You can tell somebody had fun making this show, and that amusement comes across in every scene.

I really love this cartoon. Objectively speaking I cannot consider it a masterpiece (the animation is too inconsistent and OH MY GOD THAT CGI IS AWFUL)... but in my heart it deserves five dancing ducks out of five. Fun things are indeed fun, and sometimes those fun things can become endearing things. I will miss Ahiru and company, but hopefully DrForester's nagging and all the positive word of mouth spark some interest in this rarely-mentioned anime from the beginning of last decade.

I never said I was a good reviewer!

Although I generally dislike the repetitive format of the Saint Seya battles, I thought the Gold Saints ones were executed well enough.

Like you say there, most of the wins of the protagonists in that arc weren't earned or fair. Well, I think that was the point. Their opponents often just let them pass or were too arrogant to end the fight earlier while they could still win. The viewer gets the sense that the Gold Saints actually are strong, and not just glorified Silver Saints, when the usual "I'll get up and beat you down" routine fails for once. If the Bronze Saints had gotten "fair" wins there, the Gold Saints would have come out of that arc like a bunch of jokes. But, thanks to their handling there, they're still viable characters afterwards. It's why the opponents in the Asgard and Poseidon arcs keep up with the Bronze Saints, they hadn't truly matched the Gold Saints yet.

The thing is it is very common in shounen to have the protagonists face enemies beyond their reach and win, but it mostly relies on the conditions being right and at least some kind of strategy. Luffy vs Crocodile is a great example. But with the Gold Saints, the only one I can confidently say that about was Ikki's fight. I suppose Shun vs Gemini also counts somewhat, but not really since Saga wasn't really there.

That's not quite true. While many of the serious arcs are largely self-contained, a couple of them do directly build on earlier events. For instance, the Red Spider arc builds on the earlier Yoshiwara arc, and the 4 Devas arc draws on a number of stories from throughout the series.

Not much though. The only difference between Yoshiwara and Red Spider in terms of continuity is Tsukuyo is now an ally rather than an enemy and the allies showing up in 4 Devas was more a callback than anything else.

Though the latter does have the biggest affect on the series though with the
crumbling of the 4 emperors shaking up the structure of Kabuki Town and causing the Kihetai and Kamui to join forces behind the scenes.

KURISIMASU TIME!
Hmm do I detect a
budding crush on Sakura by Syaoran
?
And
Kerberos got some of his powers back and makes it snow
!

This show is so simple but ITS SO FUCKING GOOD.
What an absolute joy to watch this.

My nagging only brings joy to people though.

Now have your prize, the greatest amv ever made.

And really glad you liked it.

Not gonna lie, this is the AMV that made me buy Princess tutu, although before that I had already decided I wanted to get it eventually. It was so hard to get at first, because they discontinued it and made it online purchase only.
This show is also absolutely ridiculously adorable.

All of this makes me realize I have gathered a pretty fucking amazing collection of anime and I hope to find ways to preserve it forever.

New Prince of Tennis 3
tumblr_ly0g9uE8XJ1qic25lo1_500.gif

Its kind of hard to feel emotional about these matches as I think the basis behind why they are held is quite dubious. People really getting kicked out? Impossible.

I continue to be impressed by Eiji, as well as characters supermoves. Shadow Clones, wow.

Aim for the Ace 3:
Three set matches for high schoolers? That seems pretty messed up. I played tennis in high school, and I don't think I could have gone three sets.

It works for the narrative, though, since Hiromi needs to fall behind at the start. She gets some good development during the match, and seems set up to take some steps forward after talking with one of the only two male students (no wonder everyone has lesbian feelings for the star of the team; there isn't much in the way of competition).

Telepathic Anti-abortionist Arjuna 9

I've just spent the last 10 minutes staring at my keyboard and I honestly just don't know what to write about this...... Holy shit, why is this even a thing?

To be fair, it never actually aired on TV. That doesn't really make any of it any better, but at least it was recognised as being a bit much. I understand that it's hard to move forward when you've seen the best episode in the show, but press on you must.
