The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

Wait, why do you think Vita won't be getting NHL? I would be willing to bet there will be a Vita version of NHL 13.

PSP got a single NHL game from EA, even though they could've just easily did annual roster updates with the only gameplay update being the ability to switch goalies during a game.

Yeah, but with the Vita, they could just sell the roster update as DLC every year (which is actually how it worked for computer sports games in the very old days)

Actually, the probably could have with the PSP version, too, had they thought of it.

It's funny, too, every year Take Two puts out its baseball game on the PSP, even this year when Sony isn't. It's always not very good, but they try to improve it from year to year, even though surely it doesn't sell much. (And somehow they managed to get umpires into it, which Sony could never figure out how to do)

Damm - the amazon.de Vita Deal is sweet, maybe I'll get it at launch.
Will there be PS1 support on day 1 ?

Hopefully with PSP games running at 60fps, means the PSN versions of GTA:LCS and GTA:VCS won't have the stuttering problem.
I'm doubting it's REALLY 60 FPS, the refresh rate angle was pointed out, but that alone could make a lot of games look nicer. Or more like stuttery messes, I remember Wyrdwad stating on another forum that Ys I & II Chronicle looked better on the PSP than TV output because it was clearly made with the PSP refresh rate in mind, though it didn't bug me that much from what little I tried so we'll see.

Heh, I read in yesterday's Yomiuri newspaper that Docomo is struggling with their 3G infrastructure because of a sharp increase in smart phone users. Some customers appear to be unable to connect, and global download speeds are going down. I've got a 100h prepaid credit for 3G but I am not really happy about the speed, anyone else got a similar experience?

Takao said:
I'm fairly certain this may be solved with the higher read speeds of the Vita memory cards.
PSN versions stuttering was never anything to do with read-speeds, it's caused by compression. You can run any PSP game as an uncompressed ISO from a cheap-ass 2MB/second MemoryStick and it will Still run faster the UMD version does.

I can't say I saw any FPS difference in two PSP games I've tried so far (LocoRoco and MinnaNoSukiri - which are both 30fps on PSP). Maybe it's a case by case thing?

Since I am probably one of 6 people in Japan that bought Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen, I can finally give a quick rundown now that I have completed it. It's essentially a 6-8 hour game, but it is also highly repetitive.

It is also the long-awaited sequel of Shinobido from the PS2, unfortunately I haven't played any of the previous ones, but from what I read on the game's FAQs, most characters basically come back in this sequel. In fact, the maps are also apparently from the previous games, though they removed certain parts of the map, and only made 1 new additional map. None of which I can tell since I haven't played the older games, but from a newbie's point of view, I'd say the maps are fairly decent, not too small, not too big.

I have to emphasize though that it does get very repetitive, not just the maps itself, but also the missions. My favorites were obviously the assassinations, but there are others like stealing items, protecting/attacking convoys, kidnapping princess, etc. Also, what are new in this sequel, one is the cape, like Cape Mario, you can fly for a limited time, and the new stealth attack, Zankoku (I'd probably just translate it as "split-second kill"), where you can lock onto an enemy and do a stealth kill from a distance. The screen turns b&w except you, then he jumps and lands near the enemy and kills him, all of which happens supposedly in split seconds. I love using this because the sequence/effects are pretty cool. You have a special gauge for that and you'll need to level up to be able to use it more often, or use it on more powerful enemies. It's a pretty powerful attack, but it is not game breaking either since you end up getting less XP for using it.

The enemy AI unfortunately aren't too smart. There are ways to exploit the AI which could make or break certain missions and even boss fights, although I have to say it can get hilarious. So for example, if you're by the cliff fighting some enemies, you can basically lure them to their death. Yes, they are not so smart. I guess I should spoiler this, but you can also
beat the final boss by luring him into a well. This boss was tough so I cheated my way out by just simply doing that. Quite anti-climactic I know.

There are other things in the game like picking up all sorts of items and mixing them to create new items, but I rarely did that. Most of the time, you get useful items during and in between missions anyways. You can use Near to trade items apparently, but didn't test it out.

If you like Acquire's games like Tenchu or Ways of the Samurai, it has exactly the same type of feel, some serious and humorous tones mixed together. If you're expecting a really good stealth game, it's a little disappointing due to the poor AI. If you want a ninja action game, well, there is Ninja Gaiden Sigma... Not sure how well this game will be received in the US/Europe though, especially against Ninja Gaiden.

Sounds about right. Those are games for a fun time so long as you're not expecting all the polish of a top-tier GOTY candidate. Some of the best moments in Tenchu were messing with the stupid guards. Some of the worst moments too though >_<
PS lifestyle import review expressed personal liking of the game, recommending it to Acquire fans, and cautioning of the "embarrassingly bad AI" and saying that it's "not for mainstream-only gamers." It'll be interesting to see how this one sells. I haven't seen in appear in the sales-age threads and those go all the way to like the top 50 so I can only assume la bomba in Japan.

Wowowowow.

Can you get the mem card deal if you've already pre-ordered and that pre-order set (blue earphones)?

Edit: Yeah, got it. The order is over my mom's account and she forwarded their email, but I never got it. Hells yeah, pre-launch bomba confirmed ;)

Do we know yet if the UK 3G Vita comes with a vodaphone sim & free copy of Wipeout? I've heard possibilities but nothing concrete.
Every UK 3G Vita comes with a Vodafone sim, and you get a free copy of Wipeout 2048 for activating it. You can, however, use any carrier you like with a 3G Vita :).

whats the cheapest vodafone topup?

I wish Docomo would unlock the JPN 3G models, then I could put a vodafone SIM in :)

I've been playing all the tutorials for games so I have something to chat to customers about tomorrow - I was surprised by Unit 13 though, in a good way. I mean it looks pretty uninspiring - but it handles really nicely and outside of the 'snap' mechanic, which is a little auto-aim for my liking, it's actually pretty fun. It also has online co-op (which I didn't know) and would probably be pretty fun doing so as well.

Thanks for your impressions Moobabe, much appreciated.

Thanks for the review! I may still get this one, though probably not at full retail price.

I want a ninja game, and NG Sigma looks nice, but I've played NG so many times now I have no need for yet another version.

This gif from the blog post further up perfectly illustrates why OLED is an infinitely superior screen technology for gaming compared to LCD:

Now we're finally getting back to what we had 15 years ago. Just need to work on that refresh rate.

Spoke to one of the guys at work last night who was an avid PSP gamer who had no idea that the Vita was coming out at all. Just from me telling him about it he seemed very interested.

Also a few more people on the other forum I frequent have started pre ordering or in same cases re pre ordering after deciding to cancel previously.

I still can't help but think that a large chunk of the people who might actually be interested in the platform have no idea it's even coming.

Also sent a tweet at MusterBuster yesterday to see if the EU might see any official bundles like the US is getting. So far I think Game/Gamestation are the only ones that have made their own bundles.

Apparently Ads have already started in the US, somebody said that sometime last week Sony sponsored an entire session of College basketball, I just haven't seen any myself though.

EG said they've chased SCEE after the reveal of the 3G/8GB bundle in the US, hopefully they'll find something out. Still haven't pre-ordered yet.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-27-sony-us-announces-vita-3g-memory-card-bundle

They probably stand a better chance at getting any info that I do!

I've pre ordered with Amazon but I'm happy to change things up if it's a better option however I suspect that bundles will be like the US with the 3G unit being pushed.

WiFi (£230) + 16gb (£40) + PSN Wipeout for £285 would be kind of sweet.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/11/21/vodafone-announced-as-preferred-partner-for-ps-vita-3g-connectivity/

The PS Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model sold in selected countries will come with a Vodafone SIM card so that users can immediately enjoy social gaming experiences on the go. Customers will also be able to buy PS Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model direct from Vodafone channels, both online and in store. In addition, customers connecting with Vodafone will receive a PlayStation Network voucher to download WipEout 2048 from PlayStation Store.

Says this as well:

Stay always connected to your PlayStation life, friends and games, wherever you are with the PS Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model and Vodafone, preferred provider of 3G connectivity for PS Vita.
Plus, Connect on Pay Monthly or top up with Vodafone to download WipEout 2048 at no extra charge.

Anyone know what the minimum payment/top-up would be?

Yep they sponsored college basketball again all day today using it as a split screen showing the entire vita on screen, all via espn...
