Please indulge me so I don't have to pay money to SHAFT to understand why so much animosity towards this particular scene.

Well you see in this particular scene we have
Shinobu appearing to Araragi while he bathes. Of course, lots of creepy fanservice ensues from this incident. Even innocent shampoo because another tool for fanservice in the directors hands.

It features
our protagonist with a naked young vampire girl in the bathtub, washing her hair and etc.

So it turns out there's a yuri anime out there that was too hot for TV and got "banned": Gokujyo ~Gokurakuin Joshikouryou Monogatari~ pulled from broadcast.

Since no one seems to have picked it up, I can only wonder how bad this show must have been... considering all the shitty anime that makes it to air.

At this point, I think the creators are doing it on purpose to garner attention.

I'd consider Rinne better than Nise, which except for episode 3 has been pretty disappointing so far.

I find the characters in Nisemonogatari far more interesting than anything in Rinne, but most episodes of Nisemonogatari have been executed in a lacklustre fashion, whereas Rinne is consistently well-made.

We can no longer be friends.

I value the truth over friendship.

This is true - the most annoying thing about Nise is how much better it could be if Shaft could be bothered to put actual effort into it.

Hey, I expected lots and lots of talky talk talking punctuated by pretty backgrounds and ridiculous architecture, and that's exactly what I'm getting. I have no need to consider anything else.

but no seriously, did circumstances really dictate the bath scene be done like... that?

And people wonder why anime fans get a bad reputation.

Detective Conan 147:
I'm glad to finally be at the part in the series where the police officers start to get more screen time. Takagi and Shiratori are both among my favorite characters in the manga, so it's nice to see episodes like this one. I like how all of the characters got to shine at various points, and each of them managed to figure out one piece of the puzzle.

I agree. I like the police officers and enjoyed watching them become more prominent as the show goes on. :) Not that they ever take over the show or anything, but they're much more than "just there" as in many of the earlier episodes. ^^

The sad part is that Arararararagi's Pedo Adventures is gonna sell thrice the amount of the second best-selling anime of the season.
B... But Shinobu is really over 400! Not pedophilia!
And Hachikuji
has been a ghost for 11 years
! That's not pedophilia either!
Just necrophilia.

Right. I mean, if you simply took the audio from this weeks episode and called it a radio-drama the end result would be better than what we have now because it wouldn't have all the very creepy fanservice.

But then we'd never to get lay eyes on Araragi's grand glorious bathroom cathedral.

Brave 10 04:

Saizou's gun-toting comrade is more horrified that
his female opponent is trying to sex him than the fact that she's also trying to inject him with toxic snake venom.
So much bad dialogue, so much yaoibait, so many lethal sword wounds with hyper-pressurized blood that are healed by the end of the episode. The show is quickly approaching so bad it's good territory.

Far more importantly, it wouldn't have Hanekawa's
bad haircut
, either.

Nise 4

I'm generally pretty forgiving of fanservice, probably more so than most, but the entire bath sequence was just way way way too much. The fact that it basically took up most of the episode was rather disturbing as well. It's a real shame too because there was some interesting dialouge in there and some nice character animation littered throughout the bath scenes(particularly around 18:30 or so, even if the characters themselves were under detailed in that section).

At this point I'm inclined to drop the show and maybe read the novel later or something.

Anyway, I also watched anime with real effort put into it:

Tokyo Godfathers

This was the last Kon work I had to see, and it may have been the best. (I'll need to rewatch Millennium Actress before I can commit to that.) The most down-to-earth of his films, it has a kind of story that would more commonly be done in live-action. However, the expressive and fluid character animation more than justifies the use of this medium; it's a joy to look at. It's exceptionally well-planned, showing the connections between people across a wide variety of societal groups, including some typically neglected (the homeless, immigrants). The number of fleshed-out and sympathizable characters is impressive. For a relatively mundane setting, there are quite a few action-packed moments, culminating in a thrilling and satisfying climax (which lampshades the "action hero" situation the characters have been thrown into). Truly a heartwarming Christmas movie.

Writing > all, etc, etc.

Episode two was thoroughly forgettable, but it had nothing that could be considered risqué beyond a Kappa plush showing its penis.

Heh, maybe. But I just want to know amounts to too hot for TV there, since both episode 1 and 3 have been banned.

Rinne no Lagrange 4
People thought I was reading too much in the intertwined-finger-sex scene from last week, but come on now.

Yuri triangles man. Yuri triangles.

Tokyo Godfathers remains my favorite Kon film, although I have to admit that in terms of technical skill and overall accomplishment in subject matter, Millennium Actress is his best work. But yeah, TG is fantastic, and resonates really well with me. The themes, characterizations, and story feel totally "real".

But then we'd never to get lay eyes on Araragi's grand glorious bathroom cathedral.

Every room in Araragi's house is only big because that allows them to position the camera as far away from the characters as possible so that they can draw very simple character designs.

But the creepy fanservice is the only thing Nise has going for it right now. If you read the posts about the show most of it is just reactions to that. The fanservice isn't a problem, because that was a part of Bake as well, it's just that it's pretty poorly done here (along with everything else). The scene with Hanekawa was just blatant filler with not a minimal amount of thought put into the execution.

But Tatsuo already confirmed that there would be no romance!
Girls can't be romantic with each other! That's biologically impossible!

This is anime. C'mon, it was obvious.
I think there's no doubt this time around. :p
Duckroll must love it, since it's BRS 2.0!

Don't forget Madoka's amazing bathroom!

Also, doing a bit more reading about that banned yuri anime, it's starting to make sense: http://abandonedfactory.wordpress.com/tag/gokurakuin-joshikouryou-monogatari/

It's an anime that features an idol group as the seiyuu... so now I can see why it might all be a stunt.

Incidentally, Tokyo Godfathers and Wolf's Rain are the last works that Keiko Nobumoto ever worked on. After that she vanished from the industry completely. Maybe she got married or something.

I haven't even finished season 3 yet. Like I said, worst poster here!

Just skip season 3 like I did.

That "sakuga moment" really bothered me, because there's no rhyme or reason to the characters' fluidly animated movements. It's like they threw that in there just so they could give the animators something to do.

That's never been the main appeal of the show. Lots of shows have fanservice-elements, Bake/Nisemonogatari is a series that lives and dies by it's characters and writing. Those elements remain strong, but the show is just badly made.

Gotta give SHAFT credit for being so cost-efficient. Their overheads must be huge.

Haha I was thinking the same thing myself. It was very random, and almost out of place. Perhaps the animators were bored because they had nothing to do in the first half of the episode.

There's not even yuri in BRS.

Oh my god, they hugged!! Girls never do that!!!

Girls within 5 feet of each other are clearly lesbians. Why else would they be interacting with each other?

That's never been the main appeal of the show.
I didn't mean to imply that, but Nise doesn't have very much going on outside of that. I don't think the writing or characters are very strong in Nise outside of what's going on in episode three, and some of the dialogue in the first episode.

Right now the show is directionless, pointlessly juggling "harem" members in and out for screen time without emphasizing a particular need for anything. There are lingering threats in the periphery, but outside of the encounter with the guy in episode three their absence from the show is noticeable. Bake was pretty good about being focused on its particular goal at any one time, and the conversations in that centered around where the show was going, so the dialogue felt more pointed. Nise simply feels like its reveling in its meandering, and even if the dialogue can feel like its strong at times it lacks much context into a greater plot.
