:lol I love that white people get so butthurt over black history month. Just fucking accept history in its current form being taught does shit to recognize black people and their accomplishments.

"Why do black people get all the holidays?"

lol wut.

But I love these twitter mockings, like the one account that had all the wikipedia blackout complaints.

That any American would ask why we need(ed) a Black History Month, is proof of why we need a black history month. Sadly, looking at Arizona, there are swaths of white America that want to put their hands over their ears when it comes to ethnic studies.

I agree. Children are taught about history in simplistic often fictional ways, The fact that a Black History Month has to exist is sad. It should be in history books throughout the entire year.

He explicitly had a sentence after that too...

About referring to each other by their skin color.

People are going to always be underrepresented, no matter their skin color, background, gender, etc. In your day-to-day life it's great to not going around labeling everyone ("Hi, black man! How are you, today?" "Oh, I'm fine, Hispanic woman") but to ignore them all together? That's just not going to work. Pretending that underrepresented people don't exist is just willful ignorance.

sorry, i disagree with this stance entirely.

Yes, and to Morgan I say, "no thanks". Asking someone to stop recognizing me as a black man is asking them to ignore a big part of who I am. I expect people to see all of me, and to not forget who I am and what I came through. No, you need to see me.

It would be nice to not need to have a month as Morgan mentioned, as black history IS American history. The problem, of course, is that there isn't very much black American history in history books. Huge portions of the American story end up left untold, and if allowed to persist will simply disappear from all knowledge. I remember in High School, I wore a NY Black Yankees t-shirt to school, and a white girl in my Spanish class asked me, "why do they have to be the BLACK Yankees"? I told her, "they were a Negro Leagues team.." to which she replied, "Why does it have to be THE NEGRO LEAGUES?!??"

Now that's a damn shame. Not 60 years ago, the Negro Leagues was the only place black athletes could play baseball..and yet the knowledge of their existence, contributions to the "national pastime" and is already almost lost. And we've had these discussions about Cripus Attucks being written out of history books, etc. The examples can go on all day, but I'm not interested in a long diatribe about it. Sure it would be nice if there was enough black American history being taught in schools as to render a heritage/history month unnecessary. But it's laughable to think that is the reality of K-12 education, and old-ass, out of touch Morgan Freeman should probably inspect some history books and consider his thoughts again.

pretty much spot on

I think Black History Month was made to acknowledge the positive contributions of African Americans in American society as well as enlighten many people to our history that normally goes ignore throughout the rest of the year.

People say thing like "Oh but we dont need it...it's American history" but look at what Texas is trying to do with rewriting the history of slavery and trying to say "WE WERE ALL ON VACATION!!!!!"

The fact is, the vast overwhelming majority of people in America was unaware of black history and there's nothing wrong with a month to bring it up.

I don't agree with Morgan Freeman's "La la la let me put my hands over my eyes and claim its not there" approach. I'm also not inclined to respect the opinion of a man that had an affair with his step-granddaughter....but that's a whole other story...

As far as why isn't there a white history month? I don't know about you but I learned Europe, Rome, British, Greek history out the ass. White hisory is taught from the cradle to the grave. The blunt truth is African American history wasn't beating taught or mentioned AT ALL. Period. It wasn't like it use to be sprinkled in with the regular American history curriculum in schools/society and it was changed. It just wasn't mentioned much or focused on at all. It was an attempt to expose the masses to a generally hushed topic. Sorry if it's uncomfortable.

I think people are very well aware why there is a black history month but a few want to rag on it anyways in order to incite racial animosity. We have it in order to remember the contributions of an important minority group that has been historically opressed. White people have been the majority and have been in power for a long time in this nation. Why is this becoming a big issue all of a sudden? We just recently heard about a wave of right wing nationalism sweeping Europe in response to immigration and I hope it doesn't start taking hold here as well.

i wonder that when people mention BET.

i mean, do people actually sit there and say "heeeey, wait a minute, why is there a BET anyway?"

That's not really fair. I mean, where can I turn to if I want to see white people on TV? Shit's racist B.

3 pages into a race thread and no arguments?

Did the mods already ban the ignorants?

Patience, old sport. This thread shall indeed deliver.

I have no problems whatsoever with celebrating Black History Month. But, I do have a problem with the racial double standard.

If I released "Caucasian" Magazine tomorrow, it would be labeled racist.

Why is that?

Because the vast overwhelming majority of magazines regardless of subject in the United States *ARE* targeted to White People by default.

Period.

Maybe because most magazines ARE caucaian magazines, of course without the "caucasian" on the label.

African-American history was a very significant part of my U.S. History classes in school. Maybe you were just in an ignorant school district.

World History classes though tend to focus on Europe, which is a problem.

Most history and media is already geared towards white people. It's more redundant than anything else really. The reason the minority history months exist is because they've been explicitly ignored due to the fact that they weren't part of the status quo of white male. With media it's similar. They want to see themselves represented. We're already plenty represented in magazines and other media.

Because Esquire is already trademarked.

Yup ALL white people everywhere get butthurt over it, like OMG, it's so true. I'm just seething as a white person that black history month exists.

Can we stop with the generality shit in threads? 99% of white people don't give a fuck, and I'd venture to guess 99% of people period don't give a fuck what the month is branded as by national education campaigns. I didn't even know it was black history month until I clicked this thread.

I have no problem with black history month for historical figures who fought for civil rights, and it's not something forced down anyone's throat so I don't see how it could be annoying to anyone. Anyone saying otherwise is just a ridiculously small minority of ignorant fucks that doesn't represent anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Thank you. It's called assimilation. If you don't want it, then you don't get the rewards that come with it. Delegating is separating.

It's JUST United States of America History. There are no more than one of them. The history of this nation does not get to ride different buses.

And the people that want White History month are just as guilty of trying to separate and delegate as any other, if they have a month dedicated to them or not. If you can see the racism, sexism, etc in the idea of white history month, try a little harder and see it in every other month. It's not proper to people in the group and outside the group.

Tell that bullshit to Texas and their intentional revisionist history of slavery.

Hey white people, don't worry. In Tennessee they are working on having text books which show true history. You know the history where our glorious founding fathers never had slaves or any such nonsense!

I didn't interpret Morgan's statements in that way. He was just saying as long as we continue on classifying people by race (something that isn't real in the first place), the history of minorities will always be treated as being separate. It would be impossible to stop classifying people by race of course considering how much "race" has played a role in society (and continues on doing so and will do so in the future) but that fact alone and the tons of other examples in history and even now goes to show you how much classifying people by skin color is (as Morgan said) nonsense.

Black History Month has definitely helped, however, as long as it's around, Black History will never be considered as American History and there will always be people who will set certain topics/people aside as being "more appropriate to talk about in February".

Positives & negatives.

Why is that?

As has been stated, blacks have been an opressed minority and it is still mostly white people running things. This is all ignoring the fact that we do acknowledge the contributions of French, British, Germans etc. but the idea of "white culture" or an universal movement to encompass white people under one banner has often been historically linked to white nationalists and nazis which makes that kind of a label toxic. These discussions are better when grounded in history.

If I released "Caucasian" Magazine tomorrow, it would be labeled racist.

Why is that?

Because it being a 'Caucasian' magazine would be the de facto standard. The majority of entertainment and media consumed (in the US) is made from a white perspective and will usually be consumed by a majority white audience. Stressing that fact would be redundant and rightly or wrongly, many will see it as sort of a dog whistle that it contains racist material.

Now if you're aiming for a smaller or more specific demographic, you usually have to emphasize that (Ebony, Alma, etc). When you pick up a mag, you don't automatically assume that you'll see different ethnic groups or non-mainstream interests for that matter prominently represented unless specifically stated.

Edit: Beaten pretty bad, lol
