Chihayafuru 18: I think the problem with this episode is that they crammed too much stuff into twenty minutes. Chihaya versus Sakura-san should have been expanded into a full episode, and the finals of Class D and B feel very summarised as well. I understand the recap episode is probably inconsequential, but it is sad to see that the show is getting rushed after that happened.

I really feel like they're in a rush to hit "point X" in the story by the time the show wraps up. This is rarely a good idea, especially if you're bringing in your less than talented staff to direct and storyboard.

Dear GAF, I'd like to ask if there is any difference between this Complete Brick Shrink Set compared to the individual dvds in terms of content? I just want to be sure, hoping to hear from anyone especially those who have purchased Gate Keepers dvds before. =[

10 disks? Certainly sounds like they just repackaged in the individual disks into a box. In terms of physical extras, it's been a long time since I've looked at my original release disks, but for the TV show at least I think they had reversible covers, and at least part of the initial print for each disk came with an ID card for one of the characters. Nothing particularly exciting, really.

New information on what E7AO really is:

The setting is "Earth" in the year 2025 A.D. The story is about Ao and his friends fighting against monsters known as Secret. "Generacion Bull" (sp?) is a private military company in the business of defeating Secrets, and they have assembled IFO (Intelligence Flying Object) pilots with great skills - all of which are girls.

The first new character shown is a 16 year old girl from France called Flair. She's the leader of Team Piped Piper, and sees Ao as a rival. The second new character is a 15 year old girl from America called Elena. She's a geek girl and little bit of a klutz, also a member of Team Piped Piper.
Well, the weirdest part about this entire thing is that:

a) This takes place in 2025 AD on Earth, 13 years in the future from now. So the parts about there being real world countries and stuff makes sense.

b) This is also supposed to be an official sequel to the E7 TV series, and Ao is the son of Eureka and Renton. Nirvash "recognizes" Ao as "Eureka".

A and B doesn't add up in any way. It's illogical and nonsensical. Something is really fucked up about this.

Sounds like it's gonna be a Eureka Seven: good night, sleep tight, young lovers style epic.

Looks like there's some super confusion over how BRS TV is going to be released on Blu-ray.

Amazon Japan:

Black Rock Shooter Blu-ray Box (June 22 2012, 29,400yen)
- Contains 4 discs with all 8 episodes
- Figma
- Art box illustrated by huke
- OST CD
- Bonus disc with clean OP/ED, PVs, etc
- Booklet

Kinokuniya:

http://forest.kinokuniya.co.jp/ItemIntro/698750

Black Rock Shooter Vol1 (June 22 2012, 6,300yen)
Black Rock Shooter Vol2 (July 27 2012, 6,300yen)
Black Rock Shooter Vol3 (Aug 17 2012, 6,300yen)
Black Rock Shooter Vol4 (Sept 28 2012, 6,300yen)
- 2 episodes per volume
- Each volume has all the same extras listed as the above box release (error?)
- The price of all 4 volumes added together is less than the box release (error??)

Okay, upon further investigation, Kinokuniya has made an error as expected. Amazon Japan also has the single volumes listed, but without the extras.

So it seems they're going for both a box release and singles. The box and the first single volume will be out on June 22, and the rest of the singles are monthly. So it would be cheaper to buy the singles, but you don't get the box, figma, OST, bonus disc, and booklet. Plus you have to wait three more months to get the entire set. You pay more for the box, but you get the entire series upfront and with the extras.

Makes sense. I think.

would that he were a better copycat.

It's also pretty telling w.r.t his view of character and theme and development of the same, especially in the sections where he talks about Motoko and humanity.
And with Motoko Kusanagi, I had trouble putting my finger on the true identity of this character. This was because she happened to be a superhuman!
Sounds like a guy who knows what he's doing.

That's a very interesting read. Strangely enough, I feel that when Kamiyama is copying Oshii very closely, such as in the Solid State Society he's far weaker than when he's developing his own stories in the main TV series.
Sounds like a guy who knows what he's doing.

Interestingly enough, Oshii has said much the thing about Lum from the Urusei Yatsura series.

Kinokuniya's listing also leaked all 8 episode titles for the series:

第1話「あとどれだけ叫べばいいのだろう」
第2話「夜明けを抱く空」
第3話「こらえた涙があふれそうなの」
第4話「いつか夢見た世界が閉じる」
第5話「ブラック・ロックシューター」
第6話「あるはずもないあの時の希望」
第7話「闇を駆ける星に願いを」
第8話「世界を超えて」

Ep1 - How much more must I shout?
Ep2 - The sky covered in dawn
Ep3 - The tears I held back are about to overflow
Ep4 - The world I dreamed of is closed off
Ep5 - Black Rock Shooter
Ep6 - The hope from back then which shouldn't have existed
Ep7 - Wishing upon a star in the darkness
Ep8 - Surpass the world

Yeah, they're all random lines from the lyrics of the original song. Lulz.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatte Iru 1

i'm gonna thoroughly enjoy this show if the first episode's anything to go by.

It's one of SHAFT's finest works. It's surprisingly well made, I mean, it's quality control is better than Nisemonogatari even though Nise is a big-name title.

Not surprising. I'm also okay with this. :D

I always thought that barely eking out marginal successes was part of what kept SHAFT sharp. This argument won't fly with most of you as I'm fairly fond of SHAFT's foibles and budget-stretching tactics and consider them part of the entertainment, but some of their least-profitable shows have been my favorites. Our first true taste of complacent successful SHAFT has been pretty bad, and at this rate I expect half of the Madoka movies' content to be devoted to Homura trying to steal Madoka's panties.

Everyone should give SHAFT's other show about a girl named Arashiyama who works in a maid cafe a try.

I hear it referred to as Milfblade - that's literally all that I know about the show. I mean, I don't even know why it's been called that. That's the extent of my opinions on Witchblade.

Anyone who spent five minutes browsing anime art gallery sites circa 2006 knows why. It's also surprisingly watchable.

Does AnimeGAF have an opinion on Witchblade?

Milfblade is actually an apt way to describe it.

If you liked any of the Marvel anime series then you'll like this. It's a lot better than all of those. But it's still not any good.

But if you were a huge fan of the comic itself I'd steer away. It's considered canon even though its a total bastardization.

I wouldn't really say Witchblade is much better than any of the Marvel anime. It's twice as long as any of them, and the designs are pretty bad. I would say the writing is on par with.... Iron Man maybe, with the ridiculousness of Wolverine, and the terrible designs of Blade. X-Men is still the king with great designs, a decent story, and solid action animation.

Well I don't really know how SHAFT is organised and funded. It is the choices of people in charge of the studio who say things like "Well, this is going to make X amount of money anyway, so it doesn't matter how much money we spend to produce it" or is it external forces essentially making the same decision. A third scenario is just as plausible I suppose - no-one has any idea what's going on and stuff just happens by chance.

Witchblade was alright. They tried really hard to make it good, and you can tell.

But in the end resistance is futile for Gonzo :(

I'd say it's X-Men is slightly better but it doesn't have a total MILF like Witchblade, so Witchblade wins. The other 3 Marvel series aren't even worth watching.

There are certainly some examples of the studio taking calculated risks with regards to allocating resources to projects. Madoka clearly had higher production qualities than most SHAFT series, but they seemed rather confident in its success before it even came out. I used to be under the assumption that they had a dedicated cult following that would faithfully purchase DVDs/BRs and thus give them leeway in what they produce, but they've run the gamut from enormous success to dismal failure in the past couple of years and so I can only conclude that there's actual thought process behind what they choose to animate and they simply experience boom and bust like any other company.

The "flying by the seat of their pants" image that they project in Zetsubou-sensei and the like is certainly true in some respects, but this is much more likely to only apply to animation deadlines and not top-level decision-making.

I'm going to get ribbed so badly for devoting any thought whatsoever to a discussion on SHAFT, but I can take it :p

what

Maybe ep10, but that's it. And SHAFT didn't even make ep10.

Angels egg - A haunting and truly beautiful experience, I'm not so sure what exactly the film was "about" but I presume the themes revolve around "faith" and "lack of faith" in a oppressive and dark world, with the titular angel's egg being symbolized as a "object of faith" or so I assume, there was also a number of biblical references that I found interesting (such as the great flood, christ-like imagery etc) and the ending was great in that it opened up a bigger mystery in the context of a already mysterious world, which gave off a really haunting feel after it ended.

Otherwise this was a excellent film with beautiful art direction, good atmosphere, great direction etc, and further proof that oshii is GOD and a master of his craft.
now I need to get around to watching beautiful dreamer and gosenzosama banbanzai! next
.

I watched one episode of Witchblade. Didn´t seem bad but I never felt like watching another episode . The lead does deserve the milfblade title .

I'm almost (almost) tired of people responding positively to Angels Egg - I kind of want someone to post that it bored them to tears. I don't know why I'd want someone to post that, or have a negative experience with a movie that I found to be excellent, but perhaps it would restore some balance.

Maybe the problem is that the people who would dislike Angel's Egg would never watch it in the first place.

Do we really need another discussion about how Shaft makes better shows than everyone else and how wrong pizzaroll is?

Cause that does get old after a while.

Can't be bothered with too much positivity?

That's why I was thinking of trying to get cosmicblizzard to watch it via a watch bet sometime in the future.

With posts like these; it truly bears repeating - shaft are shit, and they make shit shows for shit people!
