Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

You can connect to the EA servers now. Just played a few matches and it is REALLY hard plus the fact that the camera is closer to your character than it is in singleplayer doesn't help.

Yesssss. I was about to start up KoA again but I am all for this.

When does multiplayer become available to us Non-Battlefield 3 owning plebeians?

The 17th.

By the way, I'm looking for two individuals to proof-read the OT once it's finished (which should be pretty soon). Specifically, I'd like a proofreader from the "Return to the Revenge of Shit Mountain"-camp (so a completely satirical and cynical first post) and one from the "Galactic Codex"-camp (so a neutral and informative first post). The current thread's in between the two: basically a humorous informative post, but I'd like to see what others think.

Hit me up with a PM if you're interested.

I haven't been paying much attention to the news for the game, so in that regard, I might be valuable as someone who can tell you if you provide enough basic information. :)

So I played with one other guy for a while. Got to level 5. I think I'll end up playing a decent amount of the multiplayer when it's all said and done. For those who don't know, it's basically Mass Effect's version of horde mode with random objectives thrown in every couple of waves. The guy I played with didn't talk very much which made it hard to get past the more difficult waves. With friends or talkative randoms I can see this being pretty fun for what it is.

Guess it just depends on each individual's level of emotional response then. I don't see how it was "cheap". Yes...it's obvious it was there for emotional impact, that was the whole point.

Anyway, don't worry, I'm almost positive other characters you know and love will have something to that effect and will "grab your heart."

I found it cheap because it was an overly obvious ploy to create gravitas and elicit emotion.

There's a huge difference between creating honest to god emotional response by having a long time character with good development die unceremoniously, and essentially having a "children are in pain, feel something!" scene.

If it's obviously there for emotional response, it has failed in its purpose. You should feel things because you feel connected to the narrative, not because the scene is manipulating you into feeling something.

No one's being "manipulated". My brain is telling me something and I'm reacting to it. If it was one of your allies dying instead, it would be there still for an obvious emotional response and nothing else...

While I agree with your views in the general sense I think you are too critical of this scene. To me it felt like it was meant to be a sign of the overall tone of the game.

Maybe it was a bit too blatant for your tastes, even in general, but I think BioWare wanted to make a bold statement and didn't want to sacrifice an established character without giving the player some degree of input on the matter.

I think the intro will only become cheap if they fail to deliver more and greater losses as the game progresses. If that's the worst of it and those we know and care about don't end up in irreversible danger than yeah it will be a cheap cop out.

Does anyone have an idea for an estimated time the demo will go up for everyone? I'm thinking about staying up later than usual tonight to check it out.

edit: Searching online, someone said about 6am eastern. I guess I'll just wait until tomorrow.

Sure you are. That child's entire existence is to pull at your heart strings. That's blatant emotional manipulation.

I'm sure I'm being overly critical, but it's because i know Bioware can do better. A lot better. The gameplay has me impressed. The skill trees in the demo were mad impressive.

I criticize because I want the game to be great.

Finished the demo. Some of the audio felt off, like there wasn't a good balance between dialogue, action and weapons. Cut scenes looked mostly like ass. The demo appeared to be beautiful, or ugly. Shooting felt pretty good, but some of the mechanics of cover were weird. Walking felt floaty, and running felt insane. Kinect was good when it worked. I had to repeat myself a few times. What little music was pretty nice. I played as an Infiltrator.

Killing children, fluffy animals and teddy bears is a very cheap and lazy way to create an emotional response because you don't have to build any kind of relationship between the player and the character, you can just have any old kid and people will feel bad because it's a kid. It's equivalent to in horror movies when they try to scare you by having something jump out at you accompanied by a sudden, loud noise.

All stories are manipulation in one way or another, because the purpose of art is to make you feel something. But we criticize it when the way they are doing this is extremely clumsy or obvious, as many would argue it is in this case. You're not supposed to be able to see the strings, so to speak.

How do you gain access from BF3? I have it.

BF3 does not give you early access to the demo. It gives you early access to the multiplayer portion of the demo, but you must already have the demo, which until tomorrow requires getting a code from the Facebook app, Microsoft Expert Zone, or wherever. Most people do not have the demo, and the early access promotion is only available for the 360.

Tomorrow the demo will be available to download for everyone. Everyone can enjoy the single player levels, meanwhile those with BF3 online passes can also play the multiplayer. Those who don't have BF3 will be able to try the multiplayer on the 17th.

THANK YOU! That clears up everything!

Looks like I'm staying up now until 4am my time so I can d/l before going to bed. May as well watch a movie or something to pass the time.

You meant GCT (Grace Chen Time), right? Also, is it simultaneous for all PSN...er, SEN, including Australia?
PST 4pm for PSN according to Chris Prestly. About 11am for the east coast of Australia.

Guess that means it'll be 5AM on the 15th for PC in Australia, par for the course with stuff like this I guess.

It'd be wishful thinking for a PC copy of BF3 to unlock multiplayer on the 360 demo wouldn't it?
