Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Underwhelming demo, I think. I would like some interaction with the long cutscenes, as there's only a few places for actual (controllable) dialog. You also seem thrown in to the moment at the beginning, with no real context. I hope this is just due to it being a demo.

Its funny that Infiltrator doesnt have sniper rifle in the demo and whats with cooldowns on the earth escape section? Playing as adept allowed for just spamming skills left and right.

Am I the only one who hates how absolutely EVERYTHING seems to handled by the 'A' button (I'm on 360)? You take cover, sprint, pickup items, dodge, and vault over cover with that one button. This is most likely me not being used to the controls yet, but I had a LOT of trouble getting into and out of cover, because Shepard would constantly be dodging in odd directions.
It's worse on keyboard and mouse because you have so many damn keys and they still won't let you split up the actions from one key.

Weapons have a weight now. The higher the weight of the weapons you're carrying the faster your cooldown is. The second part of the demo forces you to carry a lot of weapons so your cooldown is much higher. Shame they didn't let you tweak your loadout, I'd like to experiment with a Pistol-only Adept against harder enemies.

My main problem is with the camera-work.

Something about it feels off, maybe amateurish? I don't know but it doesn't feel right. This whole demo doesn't feel right, and it's bugging me that I can't quite figure it out.

Also the lip syncing feels horrible.

What added to the aggravation for me was the fact that I cannot for the life of me see much of a use for the dodge/commando roll in the first place. It's so damn short, you don't seem to pop into cover after jumping at the end of a sprint (I couldn't get it to do that at least). Why is it in there?

Secondly, as many have already pointed out, when I'm playing as a biotic, why the hell do they load me up with a ton of weapons so I can't use my damn powers in the 2nd part of the single player demo? That was just inexcusable, and I cannot POSSIBLY imagine that nobody pointed out at some point how the this demo basically fucks you over completely unless you play as a solider. Also, the infiltrator not getting a sniper rifle? Are you fucking kidding me?!

Thirdly, I SERIOUSLY hope that this demo is just locked into some very low-res assets, because all the textures look eff'ing terrible!

I played as an adept too and the boss fight in the second part of the demo was dreadful. I would always die trying to go out of cover and end up running face first in a crate. The cover mechanic is really poor because it uses only one button.

Just start ME2 without importing any saves. They'll fill you in on what happened in ME1. I think if you check the wikis you could probably also find what the canon choices are.
Pretty shitty. Kind of kills the whole "this is YOU'RE story" idea once you know about it. My story is now just an alternate demension from what REALLY happened. A "what if" scenario.

You seem to have missed Bioware's new gameplay direction

The whole demo seemed really easy to me. The only part I came even close to dying was the boss fight, and that's because I didn't notice the other dudes jumping in and shooting me until the end.

Guess it's just that Infiltrator swag. B)

EDIT: Oh, and cover feels weird. No, I don't want to roadie run to the next bit of cover, I want to get out of cover. No sto- STOP IT GET OUT OF COVER *shepard finally backflips three times out of cover*

Standard third person shooter controls.

I agree

Wait what.

Is there a list of decision that Bioware uses in the canon storyline?

It's not so much "canon" as it is "no imported save."

Basically you played the blandest, lamest Shepard possible. You killed the Rachni queen, killed Wrex, sacrificed Kaiden, romanced Liara or Ashley (Is that right? I can't remember), and failed to save the Council but didn't do the Renegade leave them to their death option.

That's a silly thing to think, it only matters if down the line in ME4 or in the expanded universe, ie books movies, they use those canon decisions but so far they haven't. it's not like they have built the game around those choices leaving the others under developed and muted by comparison.

The Reapers kill people with beams that blast people with dubstep bass "BBBBBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"

It's all I can think of when hearing them and and I can't stop laughing.

I just finished the demo, and it looks fine on PC. Gameplay is little off [forcing the "space" button for a lots of stuff creates little problems with traversal and operating buttons], and cooldown are little too long for my taste [maybe they are shorter for totally upgraded skills].

Currently i dont have a funds for a lot of games [even if i can already now get ME3 for 30euros], and enormous backlog of PC and PS3 games to play trough is screaming at me. I will most probably get this at some end year sale...

Almost; you killed the same-gender squaddie but I don't think you romanced anyone.

I think they picked bad decisions so that you'd buy a copy of ME1 and make better ones ;)

This is all the opposite of what I did and the worst part is I forgot to backup my save when I reinstalled W7.

Fuck. Is there a site where I can download saves?

The entirety of the second section felt claustrophobic and cluttered as fuck. I never felt like I had any kind of overview of the situation, and I think I died at the boss battle about 5-6 times, because I couldn't use my powers to keep off the regular Cerberus soldiers who showed up.

By the way, is there any way to lock onto an enemy with your melee attacks? It felt extremely inefficient to try and go for melee because the animation is so long, I was missing the enemies more than half of the time I tried to 'force push' them away.

Also, why does Ashley now look so goddamn simian? Her face looks like they shaved a chimpanzee.

Edit: And what the hell is this I'm now hearing about Jessica Chobot being in the game? What the literal fuck could that insipid creature possibly add of any value to anything?

I really hate to say this, but does Mass Effect 2 look better than ME3 to anyone else? Some scenes were also kind of flickery. And Shepard walks too slow and floaty, show me some camera tricks to trick my eye into thinking I'm carrying 60lbs of gear.

Also a nitpick, I don't like the static crosshair cursor when you're not zooming in your weapon.

You can Google them. There's websites where you can upload, backup, and modify your saves, too.

The 'real story' is complete crap in terms of deisions, who cares what they went with via the default story, because they had to choose something, and don't forget that it was the Mass Effect 2 guys that made the decisions there, so if you're story is likely much better, why pay attention to the default?

I don't have the demo on hand but is this another case like the DA2 demo where the high res textures and other features were left/locked out of the demo? Also are people just using ingame options and not the config exe which may have more options? Or are the two the same?

The heavy melee is made to sync with the enemy in front of you and it actually hasn't missed when I used it (unlike all the E3/comic-con demoes where shepard just stabbed the air). The Adept attack is nice because you can actually hit multiple enemies with it.

That the Adept version of melee is actually a biotic punch is kind of neat. I thought it'd be the same for everyone (the knife thingy).

Would have liked to be able to put default femshep freckles on my custom femshep. The custom complexion #3 looks to much like some kind of acne. Kinda liked the default femshep this time over. Probably because my custom already was red-haired and had green eyes.

And where the hell are my scars?

I chuckled at some of the attempts at "emotion". Maybe I'm a bad person, but I just don't give a damn about some random kid. Shepard moves a hell of a lot better now, but the lipsynching and animation felt like it was worse than ME2 at times. And default femShep is such a piss poor job that it makes the femSheps that come out of the character creator look detailed and unique.

Well, I played the 360 demo and noticed some serious frame rate issues. Cements my decision to get the PC version.

Anyway, the opening lacked a certain sense of drama. I did not think the reaper invasion was as epic and devastating as I was expecting. And i still dislike the idea of how they head straight to earth after they were last seen outside the galaxy in ME2. I dunno... bugs me.

I played as an adept, which was a mistake as the cool downs with all the weapons they give you was crap. I would need to change my load out with just one pistol or AR...

combat felt real similar to ME2. For me, that means not great, not terrible. I still love throwing out warp holes and seeing dudes hanging helplessly in the air for 5 seconds.

aiming felt extremely floaty but also kinda jerky and the reticle moved faster than I wanted. I would move the stick a little and it would swing over a lot. just felt a little loose. I can’t remember if ME2 felt like this on console. Once again, though, it confirmed that I would be getting the PC version of the final game.

So Shepard should be a whiny bitch who in the middle of an invasion starts making pithy and backhanded remarks saying "I told you so" ? That's so much better.

At least it would be realistic. I mean, this is what happened till now:

Shepard: A race of synthetic semi-gods are coming and they want to destroy us!
Alliance/Council: Nuh-uh, it was just a nightmare.

Shepard: Repears are coming, they want to destroy us! I was talking to one of them!
Alliance/Council: Nuh-uh, Saren just tries to trick you.

Shepard: A Repear is destroying the Citadel!
Council: We so believe you now! Help us!
Alliance: You were right! Now we're gonna help you destroy this huge machine that looks like nothing we've ever seen before!
* 2 years later *
Alliance/Council: It was no Repear, it was just a big Geth.

Shepard: Repears are capturing humans and turn them into genetic goo!
Council/Alliance: Ah yes,
PogNf.gif
Repears
PogNf.gif
.

Alliance: Our research team found something important. Go and check it out.
Shepard: They found a backdoor that Repears are gonna use! Repears are coming! I had no other choice than to destroy the mass relay in order to stop them!
Alliance: Fool! We're gonna ignore your "Repears are coming" comment and will trial you for mass murder. But we will not sentence you to death for this (even though we should) because of your knowledge about Repears (that we don't believe in anyway and that we will keep ignoring).

* six month later *

Alliance: Something is attacking our colonies. You should tell us what's going on even though you're a simple soldier now and doesn't have access to all the informations!
Shepard: Repears are coming!
Alliance: OMG! So they are real?! What's your plan?!
Shepard: We're gonna stick together! / We'll fight or we'll die!
Alliance: Pfft, that's your plan?!

That's why the whole scene was so absurd. Shepard once again said "It's the Repears!" and suddenly the Alliance believed her/him and acted so fucking desperate wanting her/him to come up with a plan within few seconds.

I thought the demo looked pretty good on my laptop outside of the low-res textures especially once I used to config to turn on the anisotropic filering and motion blur.

Thought the demo was decent but really disappointing, then again I played ME1 and 2 on 360 so I could just need to get used to how it plays on PC
