Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Bit of a random question but how much did Mass Effect 2 sell on 360/PC?

Tried looking at old EA financial threads on gaf but can't find anything?

Anyone know and got a link?

Regarding the intro text, it's really indicative of Bioware not being aware of what the fuck they are doing in part 3 of the series, at least writing-wise.

Isn't that exactly what the Reapers do, or is it just because they missed the "advanced intelligent organic life" part to explain why Earth wasn't attacked back then?

Could it be that the memory ceiling that Bioware hit which forced them cut the holstering animation has anything to do with Kinect integration?

Also, in the beginning of the demo a part of the message flashes contains the statement that Reapers wipe out "all organic life in the galaxy" every 50,000 years. Really... really?

Or PS3 with slightly less available RAM. It's not hard to hit a 512MB ceiling though.

Firstly, make sure AA is turned off for Mass Effect 3, else it will force FXAA.

Then, open nVidia Inspector, and click the little screw and wrench icon to open the profile manager. At the top where it says 'Profiles' type Mass Effect, and you'll see Mass Effect III in the drop down list.

Enter the following settings (they'll be in a drop down list so no need to type them manually);
Antialiasing Compatibility = 0x080100C5 (Mass Effect, Mass Effect II)
Antialiasing Mode = Override any application settings
Antialiasing Setting = Whatever you want. I'm using 4xMSAA.
Antialiasing Transparency Multisampling = Enabled

Also, because I don't trust the in-engine settings, I also turned on;
Anisotropic Filtering Mode = User-defined / Off
Anisotropic Filtering Setting = 16x
Texture Filtering Quality = High Quality.

That what i was looking for.

I wonder if the final game will have the film grain filter. ME1 and ME2 look nicer with that thing on, takes away some of the blandness of the graphics.

For ambient occlusions set;

Ambient Occlusion Compatibility = 0x00000020 (Mass Effect)
Ambient Occlusion Setting = On
Ambient Occlusion Usage = Performance

Quality/High Quality offers no real noticeable quality improvement over performance, but does butcher the framerate, so stick with performance.

Mmm, seems im having a problem.
I dont find Mass Effect 3 in the profiles section.

That is...strange. Mass Effect III shows up in mine :/.

Anyone found a way to force AA on an ATI card? I tried making a new executable named MassEffect3Demo that boots another named UT3.exe but the game still won't run. :/

I'm using RadeonPro and didn't have to use the UT3 profile. It just worked off the bat.

Game does not look as good as Mass Effect 2...but it is a demo so we shall see

They ruined tech armor...no longer auto detonates when shields down...and nearly cuts in half power usage when on...

First part of the demo...blah...

Second part felt great...

not sure how I feel about the new health system....I do wonder why they felt they needed to change it...

NP here, I use RadeonPro too, i'm forcing 4xSSAA. Be sure to turn off AA in the game which is FXAA and isn't doing a very good job. I don't even know why some PC games nowadays don't give us a choice to use FXAA or MSAA. At least you can force a different kind of AA with ME3, not so much with Witcher 2, i'm stuck with their "FXAA", which doesn't do a very good job imo.

I like the Tech Armor change, there was never a reason not to have it on in ME2.

Just tried it and it's not working. Still looks the same. Anything specific that needs to be done?

No need to force another profile or use the UT3.exe trick, just simply make a profile and it works for me. This is what my RadeonPro ME3 profile looks like. Pretty basic.

So, I tweeted Casey Hudson about this ages ago, but he told me that the whole "slam into cover to jump over boxes" mechanic would be gone. As near as I can tell, there's no vault animation. Am I missing something here?

well that was sort of the point...like special ammo on guns...the sentinel lacked any sort of firepower but the tech armor made him a tank...with the way they changed the weapon system in part 3...it just seems like sentinel is not unique anymore...

I could've sworn the first time I played it when I was running down the side of the building and straight into a little cover, Shepard automatically lunged over it. Tried it again and it didn't do it...weird.

Yeah, that's what I have. Doesn't work.

The system tray icon turns into a red sign so I don't know if that means something went wrong.

As a resident of south Louisiana, I find Origin's logo offensive as it looks like a hurricane symbol!

Seriously though, I suppose I should be grateful for a demo at all, but installing Origin makes me feel like I'm letting EA cop a feel.

Try to force vsync (always on) in the tweaks tab and see if that changes anything. I also always leave my CCC in default, nothing turned on. Be sure to remove all the stuff you did before with UT3.exe etc.

Nothing. Are you guys sure it's working? Have you tried doing an on/off comparison?

My first PC play-through crashed to desktop and my second had enemies that I couldn't reach and that I had to kill to continue (playing as adept) so I couldn't finish the demo yet :(

What I like vs ME2 are improved combat/encounter design and soundtrack.
I couldn't get to grips with the controls at all so far though. I often 'auto-snap' somewhere I don't wanna go.
Also the HUD sometimes didn't react to input in the heat of the battle. Could the crash be of the same type as the drag-and-drop crash in ME2?
I'll reserve judgment on that for later.

I just hope this is a early build, the ps3 version doesnt look great, mostly the first area, looks muddy and janky, cant be the final build.

Shit I liked the new combat and will buy this.... but WTF at those running animations!!! LOL What happened there?!? Looks like Looney Tunes! Was ME2 like that? I don't remember it being that goofy.

The writing in ME3 is fucking atricious, goddamn.

Fucking this. I don't remember it being this bad in ME2. Anyway, I still love the game, I'm just not that hyped for it like I was with 2. The demo was great but it won't astound me like 2 did, when the full game's out.

Double tap A to leap without going into cover, and while running tap A as soon as you hit cover to slide over it and keep going.

Shepard - "We fight or we die!!!" "This isn't about tactics or strategy! It's about survival!"

*sigh*

Apparently, Cerberus forgot to replace the part of her brain that recognizes silly cliches.

So how is the framerate on PS3 and 360?

I wanted to play it on the PC but they have once again left out gamepad support rendering it useless to me. Pisses me off that I can't enjoy the game with SSAA and 60 fps as a result. :(

It feels worse than PS3 ME2, but then again it could just be a crappy old build. Seems to chug a lot more with effects on-screen.

He can't really go over tactics and strategy in 1 minute while Reapers are destroying everything dude....

That little dialogue is just there for impact, not to be deep. Even the committee guy says "That's it? That's your plan!?"

This as well. Demo was decent in regards to combat I guess. This doesn't feel like Mass Effect much at all anymore. I hope I'm wrong about that. All this awesome looking locale in the demo, on Earth... I wish I wasn't a character scrambling to save it all from complete destruction. Would have been cool to explore it. But we'll see, maybe that feeling I'm having is wrong. Game looks great, a step above the last one which is nice. Fem Shep is awfully ugly.

Overall, average experience, so we'll see what the full game does for me.

Okay...so far, the camera is in a bit too close on the 360 version. It feels a bit over-sensitive.

Also...the run animation for Admiral Anderson is fucking hilarious...

...and he just leaves the kid in the ventilation ducts???

Yeah, I am hoping it is an early build. Better yet, a very early build. I didn't notice anything too bad on the 360 version, but the whole game could certainly use some polish.

PS3 version needs quite a bit of work sadly. I hope this IS an early build as the framerate is all over the place. So good tech though, the motion blur is really nice, very clean. But hard to appreciate with the judder. Game feels good at least. See if Bioware comment on the build issues before release.

Hey, he tried to help the kid, but the kid wouldn't listen. Then he disappeared.

Wait, wasn't ME2 PS3 the first iteration of this new engine?

Or am I remembering it wrong?
