Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Ok, I'm playing Overlord right now on ME2 (360) and I can easily say anyone who thinks ME2 looks better than this demo are out of their minds.

The lighting, details in the characters, environments, etc are much better than in ME2.
 
WTF, just tried the PC demo and I'm seeing N64 blurry textures on the player models and skybox. Might be a driver thing, updating my 6970 now.

Also, I sure got a good laugh at the running animation for both Shepherd and Anderson lol. The fleeing 2d sprites in the beginning were pretty damn hilarious as well. Oh well, hopefully it gets better, will need to fix my texture problem first before I continue

Not while in combat, if I recall correctly, but once all enemies in the immediate area were killed you could and then onces you came up on more enemies youd draw your weapon again. Now though once you enter a combat section you cannot holster until the whole segment is over and youve returned to or the story has transitioned back to a non combat area.

Really? REALLY?

There's a lot to dislike in this demo (stiff animation, dialogue, loss of ME1's atmosphere), but sometimes these complaints sound so silly.
 
Demo was a letdown. Felt too much like Uncharted (enemies keep coming, so many bullets, so many enemies, they keep coming, lots of enemies.) Lame writing too, good grief.

Graphics failed to impress compared to ME2. The grain filter has become a very light dusting, if it's even there at all. That's probably why the graphics are meh.

THe thing is, the game is going to be so awesome. Everyone will hate it until it gets released, then theyll buy it, finish it, love it and pretend to hate it again.

I cant wait. ME games are one of the few games i actually get excited about. The whole setting is amazing and im not going to let a few graphical irregularities IN A DEMO stop me from enjoying what is going to be an excellent game.

So some people who preordered it only preordered it so they could try the demo and cancel? Why would they preorder in the first place if they had no intention of buying..? I can't divine the motive you're alluding to.

I almost reconsidered paying 60 for this after playing this demo and I LOVE the first game (and s till enjoyed the second game, though not as much), but I still think I will be going the benefit of the doubt route. It's an honest thing, had every intention of buying the game (and probably still will unless some more bad word comes, press, etc) and I imagine these other fellows did too.

I hope so..Let's just speculate for a minute. How do you see the story going IF that is really the intro to the game?

Well, i tend not to judge a story on the first 1 minute of a game, otherwise id hate all the final fantasy games. Id at least play the first 5 hours of an RPG to see if i like it or not then stop if i dont. I dont see that happening with Mass Effect.

People seem to just like to nitpick because its a Bioware game and they are the hated developer of the month right now.

I agree with you, but just so you know they said the demo build is like a few days out from the final build.
 
Combat is sooo much better. It feels like a bigger leap over ME2 than that was over ME1, if just because you're required to apply tactics and have a greater degree of mobility. Engineer is a really incredible class. Classes like this, and the biotics, are going to be totally boss for high recharge builds. Even the level design seems a shit ton better than ME2, where most encounters boiled down to camping at one end of the battleground and playing whack-a-mole. Here I was moving around, flanking, using melee, and repositioning. Excellent stuff.
 
I went with roleplaying since it said it was the traditional Mass Effect experience obviously action won't give you the full game so I decided screw that, but is story better than roleplaying? What mode should I choose for the full game?

This is precisely what I'm feeling. Bioware was 100% correct in saying moving around, flanking, getting better positions and beads on the enemy were key this time around.

I'm playing ME2 now again, finishing up Overlord and Arrival and I find myself constantly trying to barrel roll and switch between cover and it feels so disjointed now lol.

All of your posts makes me want to try an engineer.

The combat shines much more in the MP segment. You can mess around with taking off weapons to boost recharge speed and really screw enemies up. The Turian doesn't have a combat roll and I already found myself missing it when a grenade gets tossed.

Story makes it so the combat is beyond easy, enemies will pretty much be unable to kill you. Roleplaying is the standard, and how ME always was.

RPG mode is what you want.

Story mode is just like RPG mode except with combat toned waaay down. Fights are on easy and take a minute tops to finish.

They're just presets. If you want to engage in the dialoge, make choices, pick a class, etc, you should play RPG mode. Only avoid RPG mode if you don't like doing those things, and want the entire story to play on autopilot.

But the demo only consists of the intro sequence and an action sequence from later in the game. I am not going to say it is worse than the full game of ME 1 based on the demo alone. Besides, I have played the first one more times than I even care to remember. The story here is is reaching the conclusion that it started and that is what matters to me.

I am not expecting some NY Times best seller quality writing, but I do want my Mass Effect conclusion, and that is precisely what this is. I'll render my final verdict on how I feel about the game on the whole after I have actually played it in it's entirety. Doing so based only on what little the demo provides is not only premature, but foolish.

It's a lot of fun, and I wasn't too hot on the engineer in the last two games. With few weapons and a fast cool down you'll be able to do serious damage with your powers. Throw in a sniper rifle if you're afraid of getting close and pick off dudes as they're distracted, or maybe give yourself a shotgun and while the they're busy dealing with your turret and sentry drone flank them for a blast to the face.

Can this whole "people who dislike anything about a game are lying and actually buy it and love it from day 1" thing be bannable at this point? It's the most anti-discussion thing we've had since "haters gonna hate."

I think that you do. There's also no pop up or information window to tell you that you unlocked them either during the demo. You just get a special delivery quest in Amalur and the stuff appears in the chest.

Edit: well I quit out of the demo (sorry Mass Effectees, just not my thing) and I got them in Amalur anyway, so I guess maybe you don't have to finish.

Yes it is bad to form an opinion on an entire game based on a few minutes of gameplay. But at the same time it is hard not to because that is what a demo is for. Even in minutes of gameplay you can notice things that can turn you off from the game.

Story wise.. It is hard for me to see where the story will go with the Reapers landing that early in the game. Not to mention prior to them arriving Shepard is still trying to convince peers of their existance..AGAIN! So that alone worries me.

Secondly, the female Krogan rescue rubbed me the wrong way as well. I really get a ME2 vibe from it. So if my hunch is true...that means I will go around doing "favors" or side quests to convince other species to join the fight all while giant Reapers are destroying the galaxy.

I just don't like the idea of the Reapers all showing up at once..Especially in the beginning of the game when you haven't even built up a force against the opposition. It also makes ME2 even more irrelevant since if the Reapers were going to show up so early in ME3, then the recruiting we did in ME2 should have really been the recruiting we are going to do in ME3.
 
The ps3 demo is really bad, framerate is better in the second half but goddam the first half it was like I was missing half a game with how the low fps os.

Gonna try the pc demo now, but the game feels much better regardless. Getting teased with quick biotic recharge in the into has made me determined to go that route over power.

Depends, some ME>ME2 transfers were near perfect, others were off by wide margins, same looks to be the case for ME2>ME3, some peoples Shepards are near identical while others are noticeably different. On the whole the ME3 CC looks like it creates nice looking Shepards just as easily as ME2 and far better than ME1 where things woud look great in the CC and once you hit that opening sequence on the Normandy cockpit the ugly just came gushing out.

I dont think its anything to get excited or worked up over. Theyve made changes to the CC, improved some things, altered some others, other than the FemShep hair styles being a bit too volumous everything looks to be for the better.
 
The first section of the demo is not great. There's the naff dialogue and awkward animation, running across crumbling buildings with my arms permanently outstretched. It'd look better as a first person shooter, hide those animations.

I can't really pin it down, this just feels worse than the other games.

Given the game shares many similarities with ME2, moving over to Frostbite would require a lot of code be re-written, and the techs relearn the ins and outs of Frostbite. It would make for a better looking game, but also a longer development cycle, and runs the risk of new issues popping up that take even longer to fix.

Easiest path was to continue using UE3.

It pretty much is haters gonna hate. This new thing where the ME obsessed just pass everything off as "people hate cause it's bioware" is exactly haters gonna hate.

It really grates on me. I give credit when it's due, like I gave ToR's writing some credit. I just haven't seen much of ME3 that warrants any credit yet. They put out a really shit demo and I'm judging what I saw.

Nope. It's putting me off too. The running animation is what got me. Some qualms with the gun play and interactivity. But I'm writing this demo off as a beta and not the final version. If this IS indicative of the final version I'll literally wait until it's 5 dollars on the next years Steam sale.



What the FUCK is going on at Bioware? Multi-million dollar gaming budget and they're going backwards in talent? Was this AAA title rated by Moodys/S&P?
