Looks like the Pac-Man anime is going to be a "big deal" for Bandai Namco. This is really kinda weird and fucked up. They're going full steam ahead with a 26 episode full season of a Pac Man CG animation series for 2013. The show will have an insane budget of 600,000 USD per episode. Avi Arad is the adviser for Bandai Namco Holdings on this project, while the show's producer is Rick Ungar, and the writers on the show are Tom Ruegger and Paul Rugg.

Why? Why is this happening? What is possessing them??

I'm trying to think of what kind of storylines a pac-man anime could set up. Pill munchers anonymous?

but how's scamco gonna fuck over consumers with a bizarre tv show???

I think Namco's thought process is something like this:

Popular worldwide mascot brand

+

High budget modern technology medium

+

Staff who have made successful cartoons in the past

=

SUPER SUCCESS!

What is hilarious is that its 5 times the budget of a normal anime episode. Namco is basically setting money on fire here. If this flops, they will be in some deep shit.

Uh... OK.

Madhouse is dead bro.

Crossing my fingers for the revival at Studio Mappa after the live-action movie!

(Also what josei show has had a run of 50+ episodes? The closest I can think of is the 47 episodes of Nana.)

I look forward to that spectacular bomb.

Sounds like you were the one who pitched this idea!

I don't think they'll be in "deep shit", it'll just be a hilarious waste of money. If the entire thng makes zero dollars back, it's just a 16 million dollar loss. For a huge worldwide game publisher, that's chump change!

O_O This could actually be good. Though I'd rather they just use the money to make an awesome Ace Combat anime. :\

Someone really has money to burn.

Well loss of prestige etc too... then again this is Bandai Namco. I'm not sure they have any shame left.

If it's the same thing he was working on in 2010, you can look forward to human interest stories... via Pac-Man.

"We wanted to keep Pac-Man the same lovable guy he has always been, but (put him) in the 21st century," Arad said. "We (also) wanted to talk about real stories and … see how they can relate to our lives, being in high school and being a teenager. At the end of the day, it's the story of a reluctant hero."

The plot centers around ghosts who are trying to overtake Pac-Man's world. It's up to Pac-Man, who's a high school student, to save the world. In this mission, he'll be assisted by his Pac-friends and four friendly ghosts -- Pinky, Inky, Blinky and Clyde (who were the little guy's archenemies in the original arcade game).Arad said he has not yet approached studios and distributors with the idea, since he and Namco wanted to unveil it at the celebratory event -- and both parties wanted the 3D in the trailer to be done right before showing it to potential TV partners.

"We feel we have a unique opportunity to have an action adventure, human interest story," Arad said. "As a filmmaker, it's a unique opportunity to get to know the characters you play. … We don't know what happened to Pac-Man's parents. He's the only yellow one in Pac-Land; what does that mean? Is it a social statement? We'll find out."

Taichi and Chihaya can have each other. Arata and The Queen will come together and in 30 years their karuta godlets will be bodying chi-achi's offspring about as hard as Taichi got bodied on the daily.

Don't click. Really. Don't!

I guess Arad makes money with his films... maybe he's onto something here. :p

What I'm most interested in knowing is which studio will be doing the CG work. It would be stupid to spend all this money only to have the show look like crap in the end.

I don't think there's any possible reaction to this besides befuddlement.

One thing that's impressed me about the P4 adaptation so far is how well Soejima's art translated. I'm only on the second ep so I haven't seen some of the more infamous dips in quality, but when nailing it, they actually frickin nail it, so to speak. Really cool.

Noep. You're losing me, Namo.

They should be nothing less than flesh ravaging monsters...with Prohibition era Chi-Town gangster swag.

I just woke up to this but now am not even sure am awake anymore.

It has to be a joke.
Not being sarcastic, here: the guy does sound like he's trying really hard to come up with the worst pitch possible.

And that was in 2010. Somehow, 2 years later, not only is the same guy still in charge of the project, but it's actually getting a huge budget and targeting a worldwide audience. The people writing the checks REALLY believe they have a winner here!

Can you even make that amount of money back from anime?

P4:1-2

That wasn't bad at all. I swear I'm hearing a new theme or two along with a heap of ones straight from the game, which actually hit me kind of hard. The fanservice is strong with this one. Shit will go down once Signs of Love plays. Also, day Lotus Juice ed, good but so bad.

Shaft: shameless thieves?

Key are the true wise men of our time.

If it turns out better than the Marvel animes, which should have been slam-dunks money-in-the-bank-drawing-interest, I'll laugh.

It won't.

Pac-Man's like, really deep or something, yo. You're running through a maze that has no exit, and, like, death relentlessly chases you as you endlessly try to satisfy your incessant hunger and stuff. It's totally a metaphor for how death makes all of our efforts meaningless so we try to indulge in as much pleasure as we can while we can. You all laugh, but this show's going to be mad philosophical, dudes.

The best we can hope for is the strong teasing of a canon pairing in the final episode.

Chihayafuru Manga-spoilers:

Not happening, I think. Even the manga in the latest chapters is almost solely focusing on Karuta and in the 15-whatever volumes that are out, there's been no romantic progress between any of the cast. (there's been hints but if I spoiled those, Taichi fans would slash their wrists)

Katanagatari 3 & 4

3 - I don't know why but I felt bad for the Priestess when all was said and done.

4 - *Hyped out the ass after watching Episode 3's preview*
*watches the actual episode*
*MANTIS, BUTTERFLY, BEE*

...

Well fuck me, I got super trolled coming from the preview off episode 3. :(

At the same time though, Shichika's sis is broken as fuck. That's some Medaka level of shit right there. :lol

Edit: Waaaaat @ that Pac-Man anime and it's details.

I wasn't particularly interested in the teased fight between Shichika and that other dude so when it turned into this super troll episode, I was kinda glad. Its a great episode though. Nanami is the best character in that show bar none.

A Pac-Man slice of life drama?

Great news! Maybe after, they can start work on that Dig Dug harem rom-com I've been dreaming of.

Can't wait for you guys to start shipping Arata x Ms Pac-Man.

I'm in a severe need for action and haven't found anything recent-ish that scratched the itch more than the teased fight in episode three's preview [and the "saved for Kizumonogatari" clips from Bakemo]. I should know better by now, but dammit those clips were awesome looking :(

:lol

Agreed. That episode was probably the best in the show, watching Nanami go beast mode on the bug-squad was a lot of fun.
