What players in NBA history have actually made drastic improvements to their FT percentage over time though? C-Webb and Malone are the only two guys who come to mind that went from garbage to decent/good FT shooters. Seems like players are who they are at the FT line. There are a handful of anomalies who can make that kind of drastic improvement but I wouldn't ever bet on Blake being that guy not because of some kind of perceived flaws to his game or work ethic, just because history isn't on his side.

Not sure how you define drastic but the first one off the top of my head was Tyson Chandler.

Mostly a mid 50's to low 60 percent shooter who is now in the 70's.

You don't see a guy go from 55 to 85 that often, true.

But I think if you look at most players' careers, you do see improvement for their first few years.

Even Nash's 1st 3 years were below 86.1%

What you usually see is a 55 become 65 or a 65 become 72 or a 72 become 77, etc. Not large improvement, but enough to matter.

Blake doesn't need to become an 85% shooter. But if he could get to at least 65%, it changes things quite a bit. And he can shoot, which is why his FT shooting is maddening.

I won't bitch about the big guys. I have no perspective on shooting as a 7 footer. But the guys like rondo who can't shoot make no sense to me.

Or guys like Bowen who could shoot 40% from 3, but barely get that at the FT line. WTF is that.

The really interesting thing is that you'd expect free throw shooting to increase all around over the decades..... Better understanding of shooting, better training, LASIK surgery etc.

Yet it's been constantly the same for like 50 years now.

I don't think there's any substitute for practice and repetition. I'm guessing a lot of guys just don't do that enough.
