The LEGO Thread

Hey fellas, this thread made me want to find all my childhood legos at my parent's house. I found a few of my old castle sets still on the shelves, but they are incredibly dusty. What's the best way to get these pieces fresh and clean again so that I can rebuild them??

Old dusty Lego
+ washing bags (or zip locked cushion cases)
+ washingmashine

Lowest settings no spinning.
Then lay out on towel to dry out.

It is done!

Great job! That Town Hall is so classy.

EDIT: Just found out there is a mom and pop toy store in town that carries Lego. Awww yeah!

EDIT2: Checked it out, nice little shop. More Playmobil then Lego but the selection was pretty good. They had a lot of city and mostly older Star Wars sets (Slave 1 for $90 and Wampa Cave for $50) so a bit more expensive bit it's a local shop so it's good to support those guys. The smaller, non Star Wars sets were only a few dollars more expensive then Amazon so I'll probably buy from them for those. They said Lego sends them the stock so I wonder if they will get the sets released last month anytime soon? At least they said I can special order if I want. Pretty cool, and it's right down the street. No mini-figs though. Maybe I can convince them to stock some!

Cool, do you have any of the other modulars and if so how would you compare the town hall to them?

I've got all the other modulars, save for the Cafe Corner. I don't have any of the other ones built at the moment, but will start putting them all together (Pet Shop is next) so I can have a full row for comparison.

One thing I can say for certain is that the Town Hall is the new king of 'number of windows'. This set has 72 of them!

I would really like to see Lego taking old sets out of the vault, so to speak, for collectors after some amount of time. They don't have to go crazy or anything but take something OOP every six months or so and make it available again. Especially the modular buildings.

I imagine you have no desire to sort them anytime soon, do you? Haha - that will do wonders on your sanity. :P

I got about 50% through, then found a another huge stash of Lego that ended that crusade. I decided to build a Goomba instead.

Just google 'Goomba Lego' for inscructions if you are interested.

Also, just got this:

Really liked it, despite not being too much.

I liked that enough to go buy the other two out now, despite being prequel stuff. They're really neat builds, and nice desk pieces. I'll probably continue to get these, at $10 a piece they're a good value.

Metal Grudge is DONE! Man, besides the obvious gleeful joy of having something that looks so much like an actual Metal Slug tank sitting on your desk, this thing is just super fun to drive. It's almost unbelievable how the wheels on it work, it's like it floats above the ground, drifts into turns (but just enough so that it's easily manageable). It really moves like a cartoon vehicle, which was the whole point I guess, what with Metal Slug tank in the game being so flexible and agile.

Also, the same designer has now constructed Girl's Tank which I posted a few pages back. I have just now found that he made an entry on Rebrickable.com with it, so now ordering parts from Bricklink will be really easy, as Rebrickable can output an XML format required for mass ordering on Bricklink.

Where is the final episode of Bricked? All this time and they don't post the most important episode of the whole series?

same. did they do it livestreamed on justin.tv? I can't find it on there and normally they're pretty good at getting episodes up quickly. Maybe it'll be up Monday morning?

I just found that on Rebrickable yesterday at work, I am trying to resist the urge to create my own tank garrison.....

Pics of your Grudge? Is that 3 or 4 we know of?

I'm thinking of trying to add to mine a little, I want to fill the gap in the side pod without the battery box.

From the guy who made the original:

"The original only had a single batterybox. The reason it has two receivers is simple; a receiver is limited in the amount of power it can transfer. By giving each motor it's own receiver, I double the power each motor gets."

Tempting.

Been building my Tantive and really enojying it. Here's a pic from about halfway through book 1. I ended up having to sort a bit, took out the wheels (for engines) dishes, plates and large techinc parts. Really enjoyed looking for parts and only had a few moments of doubting they were actually there.

I'm working on the same project, though I began the builds with Cafe Corner and am working towards Town Hall. I've never had them all built at the same time and space is becoming an issue! Hoping I can find a nice display solution at IKEA. Otherwise, looks like the dining room table will be overrun with Lego for months to come. (Though that isn't such a bad thing, really) :p

Finished Market Street last night!

And with Cafe Corner:

I'd cut them some slack. I was just listening to the tested podcast for Mar. 1st and between Will being extremely sick and them running out their buffer of original content to upload on the site I'm sure it will be up sooner than later.

I'll post some pictures, yeah. Just so that there's no confusion, Metal Grudge does NOT have an entry on rebrickable, Girl's Tank does (and also his crazy looking snowmobile too)

I was considering filling the gap with a stack of plates the same size as the battery box, just to even out the weight distribution. However, I ended up filling some of that space with reinforcements for the motors (not really needed, but I just wanted to do it). With the lightweight rechargeable battery box there's no weight distribution problem at all. Tank goes straight when it's supposed to. I ended up adding a bit to mine as well because I didn't have all the original colours.

As for the 2 receivers vs. 1, his explanation makes sense, but the tank is very fast with just one receiver already, so I don't know if it would make sense to make it even faster. I'll give it a try - I ordered two receivers on his recommendation, but the thing already glides very fast, so I'd say it's not really needed.

I've just done wanted list on Bricklink for Girl's tank. It's... expensive... really expensive. $314 for the non-electrical parts (they are always cheapest from Lego directly). So probably $400 with all the electrical parts, as it needs 4 motors and 2 receivers. That's just way too much :(

Man that Lego Merry Go Round and Mass Effect stuff is too good.

The Mrs did some calculating today, it was the last day of buying Lego for my 2 1/2 year old (really me) today for a few months :(

We did pick this up today tho and played boys dolls.

Oh yeah I meant the basic tank chasis is on rebrickable, didn't realise you meant the Girls Tank. I can believe it is expensive and am not tempted other than the fact it has firing cannons which is something I was thinking about.

I don't yet know how mine runs properly as I bought the wrong remote (thinking bigger is better.....) but will get the correct one tomorrow when I hit a Lego store.

So I've decided the four bigger sets i really want as of now are

Queen Anns Revenge
The Black Pearl
The Grand Emporium
and The VW Camper Van.

I might actually start with the fire brigade since its going OOP pretty soon but anyone know roughly when the rest of these sets will go OOP so I don't get stuck trying to track one down at the last minute?

Not sure if this got answered or not but from what I've seen generally the Lego direct sets (modulars and the VW Van in this case) stay around for at least 2 years. The two licensed sets are a toss-up, but I believe last time I was in my locally-owned-toy-shop-that-stocks-mainly-Lego-sets the Lego wholesale catalog he had showed Pirates of the Caribbean showing as available all-year. Can't say for sure both those sets were shown though. Anyway, I'd say the following:

- Queen Anne's Revenge: released April 2011, should be around until end of year
- The Black Pearl: released November 2011, should be around until end of year
- The Grand Emporium: released March 2010, should easily be around until the 2013 modular building
- VW Camper Van: released September 2011, should easily be around another year and a half by my guess
- Fire Brigade: released September 2009, will be gone very soon (some people thought it would go OOP when Town Hall came out, my local Lego store employees guessed it would be more like summer, but again, these are all guesses)

I'd say Fire Brigade > QAR > Black Pearl > Grand Emporium > VW Van would be the order I'd pick those five sets up if you're worried about them going out of print.

Anyone else feel kind of..."defeated" I guess? I ordered the fire brigade but almost feel like "what's the point?" given that green grocer, cafe corner are OOP. Maybe it's the collector in me but I'd like a full collection of the modulars and don't want to pay out the ass for them. I'm sure a nice display can still come from what's available but it has me thinking maybe I should stick to some Star wars since those are likely to get revamped versions, especially with the 3D re-releases. It's also easier for me to pick and choose what I want from the other series.

Dunno, my collector mentality is strange at times.

I understand. I am the same way. But I also look at what little space I have and am fine with not having them all. And for now I can at least start with the kick ass modulars that are available.

This is the only reason I am glad the modulars don't tickle my fancy.

Cool, I have them all except market st (and pet store is on the way and town hall which will be in a few months I think)

Last time I got one (fire brigade) I put all my other ones together at the same time...took me several weeks to do, a few hours each night. Not sure whether I will this time or wait til town hall and just leave pet shop assembled when it shows up.

I agree partially, but I'm personally looking forward to Bricklinking GG, CC, and MS. Pains me to no end that I'll not end up with the boxes and instructions for them, but I guess the act of actually collecting the pieces (and trying to do so without breaking the bank) is kinda exciting to me.

So had to pick up a few things at the store today and grabbed 5 minifigs on the way out.
I got 2 space girls and 3 robots!. What are the odds.
Oh well. Some fun was had anyway! :D

I went looking for some Series 6 but 3 shops all had zero of any series!

Those are exaclty what I was looking for too........

The robot minifigs are cuuuute.

On the OOP modulars......seems like such a missed opportunity for Lego to not reproduce these sets. The demand seems to be there, at least now. I don't think anyone really knew where the line was going back when the first set was released. And IIRC, Lego didn't guarantee that future sets would follow. I imagine some people passed on it because of this. Didn't help that they branded the second set, Market Street, as Factory either.

Of all the OOP modulars, the one I really want it Cafe Corner. Market St and Green Grocer look okay, but Cafe Corner is just sexy looking.

Finally did my first MOC's! Just some basic pixel art type stuff inspired by this thread.

deefuzz_moc.jpg

Just a basic simple start, but gotta start somewhere right?

Thinking of doing my next pixel stuff that way instead of using flat pieces like I did with the Mega Man stuff I posted pages back. Thinking of disassembling the Mega Man and Cut Man MOCs I made and do a huge one of Mario riding on Yoshi.

Cafe Corner has a wonderful exterior, but it lacks any sort of interior decoration. In fact, the floor inside is just the green base plate. Kind of bugs me - especially compared to the interior details of Fire Brigade and Town Hall.

I made some more purchases for this week. The Funhouse, Grand Emporium and train set were made during TRU's sale last week. I just got them in. The Toy Story and World Racer sets were on sale at Amazon last week for about 30% off. I'm gonna get started on building the Grand Emporium soon to go along with the Fire Brigade I got last week. These are the last sets I'll be getting for awhile cause I'm totally broke now.

The Fun With Vehicles set seems really decent for beginner-level MOCin', which is exactly where I'm at. I think I'll pick it up in conjunction with Ewok Attack, as I'm after some decent foliage/earthy stuff, too (even if it is pretty poorly priced). Any other relatively cheap recommendations when it comes to environmental pieces?

The Log Cabin at $30 is a good deal for brown bricks.

Cannibal Escape is another set to check out.

Randomly got some older sets in at work today:

Both seem like cool builds. We got the X-Wing in finally too, really want it. Porkins minifig is fucking amazing.

So I'm now glad I mixed my Death Star bags together. I got to spend the day elbow deep in LEGO. Lots of progress, finished up through what would have been bags #5, which got be through most of the 3rd level.

Been a very fun build, I guess i've never looked to hard at this set, because there's moving parts everywhere. I have made it a point not to look to closely at the box, because I've had a lot of fun being surprised by all the stuff that can be interacted with.

Finished the body, most of the cockpit and the entire middle wing of the Imperial Shuttle today. It's true what everybody says - this ship is large!

The main body of the Shuttle was a lot of fun to build. It's a good mix of different pieces, a lot of Technic gears, and clever ways of hiding those gears and studs.
