Haha I know, it's just a long standing FoH meme that I couldn't resist.

This could turn it around for Vanguard.

Note there will be 12 Major traits by launch, for those doing builds now.

Oh shit....REALLY? I'd actually jump back in and reroll my Cleric if that happened. This could really turn it around for Vanguard.

That was the rumor, and EQ2 just went F2P not that long ago so it kind of fits into SOE's "Save dying MMOs by making them free" strategy.

Imagine if Sony actually puts some real money behind Vanguard to get it spiffed up for a F2P relaunch... well, it would be the first time they actually put some real money behind Vanguard, wouldn't it.

I'm guessing Tinypic? GAF has banned them because some images were being turned into porn or something. Use Min.us or imgur.

Edit: Hmm, so each trait line will have 12 Major traits to choose from? Awesome, more choices is always a good thing.

PvP Team Stunlock

Discipline Banner Stunlocker (subteam A)

Grounded Ele (subteam A)

Tactics Banner Stunlocker (subteam B)

Grounded Ele (subteam B)

Camper (rogue)

So this is like the nastiest PvP build I can think of. I am not going to explain how all the skills and traits work. Fellow builders can figure it out. I'll just give a quick overview.

  • Eles emphasize burning, they allow CPC for the tanks
  • Warriors need to carefully monitor their movement speed, eles are must faster, might require tweaks
  • Subteams can split off together if needed or be a large group
  • Guardian is the team camper. Their job is to camp a cap point that was just grabbed holding out as long as possible. When a new cap point is about to be capped, the guardian moves.
  • Team emphasis is to hold +1.5 cap points at all times, this means offensive sub-groups rolling enemies while the guardian always challenges another point. There are 3 points and the above team should never not have at least 1.5+.

60 Major Traits per profession is hotness. I figured they'd have an even amount because as it stands now some professions have more than others and that's obviously not fair. Good to see confirmation on that though.

PvP Team Stunlock

I'll have to dig into the specifics a little later since I don't have time at the moment, but the strategy sounds fairly solid; by terrorizing multiple positions at once away from the objective the Guardian is locking down, they can keep reinforcements off him or her while capping. And if they don't fall for it, I can't think of any profession more capable of keeping shit back than the Guardian.

Elementalists are flashy too, that'll get the Sub-teams noticed while the Guardian quietly caps everything.

would this be a decent beast master build? i dont like bow ranger much and i rather be in melee with a pet.

Yeah looks great, just so you know though, if you switch from one weapon to another set, you retain the cooldown timers from the previous swap so you can't use axe 1 2 3 switch and use axe 1 2 3, you have to wait for the CD as if you're still using it without swapping. So be sure swapping to the 2 offhand axe skills is worth it.

Ooooh i like that PvP Ele build, i was building for now a Dual Dagger Air/Fire/Arc for fun but that build looks very strong.

I think 95% of the press didn't investigate the game and maybe only heard about no dedicated healer and that's it.

A bit of a shame but well, they offer the perspective of new players playing for the first time.

Oh I'm not worried about what they say, it just frustrates me that so many of the press went into this event that many people are dying to get into and are completely clueless about the systems in the game.

Just wanted to say thanks for finding this. We all kind of launched into "Your link is broken" mode and you were delivering really good news.

My wife noticed earlier that the Nature Magic line has no Major traits. I know that we're missing a ton of info across the board and that builds right now are more for fun/experimentation, but in this particular case we can't even guess at what the general tone of those traits will be.

It's like all of your friends are waiting for a chance to play and they pick the the guy who your friend invited from work that he says is 'cool' but turns out to be a dreadful asshole with a ton of annoying habits, and everyone is too nice to tell him to fuck off. The kind who says he's a "Gamer" and really into Multiplayer games and it turns out he only plays Call of Duty on the weekends.

Sounds like you've experienced this first hand?

I completely agree that the selection was a bit of a miss but I think most people will get their information through articles and interviews to get a better perspective on the game. These videos are nice but to truly understand guild wars 2, ill take an article any day.(unless its made by anet)

Sounds like you've experienced this first hand?

Sadly, yes. In this particular case though, we were all getting together to catch a movie, have dinner and then play Halo (this was back before Live and you had to network multiple systems). And this guy was a dyed-in-the-wool foaming-at-the-mouth Nintendo fanboy who hated Microsoft and spent the whole night bitching about how bad the game was and how we should all play Perfect Dark instead and then we'd see a good shooter (though to be fair, Perfect Dark is pretty fun too). Every time he died he'd sigh loudly and bitch about how "If X wasn't so broken" or "If this controller wasn't such shit...".

He caught a ride with one of our friends who didn't want to leave, though eventually he did fall on his sword for the us.

Reminds me of the time we all got together to go see Star Wars on opening night and a co-worker caught wind of it and kind of invited himself. In costume. And cheered like a spaz through the whole movie. Loudly.

YOU DIED, UNDOWNLOAD THE GAME!

I really hate to say this kinda thing again, since I sometimes feel like I never really gave it the chance it deserves, but DotA and all the spinoffs really scare me in terms of community rabidness. It seems so violently insular that I don't see how the community can actually grow except when new games are released, and even then the attitude of the genre's fans would probably drive most of them away. They make WoW players look tame by comparison and that's saying something.

Work all day.... Also that thing about more traits is awesome!!!!!!

60 Traits per class is amazing and more customization is always good... but on the other hand, holy shit there's going to be some hard decisions when it comes time to actually make a build.

I'm hoping ANet manages to cut a lot of the fat and deliver 12 traits you have to really have to pick from, not just 4 good ones and a lot of filler like WoW's Talent trees (where you ran out of interesting/useful places to put points rather quickly). Based on what we've seen so far, I don't think it'll be a problem.

OHHHHHHHHHHH yeah, it's not even a joke. MOBAs have the worst communities in gaming.

Oh dear. Reminds me of my early Shaman and Paladin PVP days with WoW in Arathi Basin. Looks like I may be slotting back in to that role seamlessly once again.

I want them to foster a lot of different play styles so that players can experiment and not feel underpowered. Something that you can make that's niche n go wow! what's that build?

Also more traits fucks with gunbo :p

I'll keep adapting like any good virus.

I'll keep adapting like any good virus.

I'm just glad you're on GAF's side so we'll all be vaccinated, so to speak. I wouldn't want to be staring down the barrel of that build you made earlier.

On that note, I'm not familiar enough with Elementalists, but the Warrior and Guardian setups both look like they'll work as advertised.

The post on gw2guru about cash shop items is infuriating! If you read how the post originated, it refers to a rumor about how arena net is going to put pay 2 win items in the game. Whaaaaat? That is against their philosophy, and would totally hurt their cred and ideals, not to mention the fanbase that actually cares! They would NEVER do that, and the guy is obviously trolling for angry discussion! Grrr so mad!

This type of discussion is going to happen in any game that has a "cash shop". People are still waiting for "pay2win" from the WoW pet/mount shop. That's stupid internet people for you.

Best just ignore it. It does suck that it probably turns off potential buyers of the game though who might not know better.

I've been playing LoL for the past 7 months, so any other community will seem like paradise to me. :)

lol yeah. That game was so stressful for me i actually had to take a break because the community sucks major butt. I haven't played in like 6 months. I really wanna go back and play with all the new champions but the thought of dealing with people in there just turns me off instantly. I hope GW2's community is nice..

PvP Team Stunlock

I like your Ele build. Only thing I would change is take five from air and put it into fire to get either One With Fire, or Burning Precision. I would figure all added burn chances would add up to more damage than the times they are Knocked Downed or Stunned. Especcially if both Eles go with a similar burn stack and run together. Also from the looks from the few videos it looks like the summon elementals suck, but I am hoping they get buffed up for release.

It's not great by any means, gaming on a budget! :lol

Pretty much took the $900 build from the pc thread but throwing in a GTX570 superclocked instead of GTX560 ti.

Yeah, I skimmed the article and it's based entirely on a "What if" that ANet has repeatedly stated they will not pursuit. Therefore, it strikes me as an attempt to generate traffic by insinuating that Pay 2 Win items are going to be in the game. Pretty fucking low if you ask me.

I totally agree, and reading about how it came into being is absolutely the wrong thing with GW2Guru's forums - absolutely BASELESS speculation taken as fact because they don't have direct info (and in this case, they DO, and it's absolutely wrong and still they believe the opposite).

I really believe they just want to find something to bitch about and will stop at nothing until they find every single small nitpick.

I wanted some armor. And the two major air traits are the heart of the team build. +50% damage to stunned or knocked down foes is no joke. That's 50% not +50. The 700 high damage ele casts would be doing over 1,000. The +25% damage on a foe with less then 25% health can be huge. Most players will wait until their health is that low to heal. If you stun/daze them at that moment the ele will rip them to shreds. That is a +75% damage boost from a simple skull crack on a <25% enemy. And if you have full health you increase that boost even higher. So conceptually you could be doing 2x the normal damage on a low health enemy with your stunlock teammate. Sounds pretty formidable to me.

One with fire is a question mark since the frequency of attunement switches is unknown. Burning precision is not super important with elemental surge + arcanes. That's guaranteed burning. Remember though, that flame burst is only a 10CD and that is a burn skill. Also lava font is a 6CD, +30% on duration with persisting flames, and warriors can use it for CPC.

I picked summon elementals because I don't want my eles switching from their base tactics. Chances are that a possible 2x damage boost on enemies is better then a tornado. The more obvious and easy switch is fiery greatsword. Finally, the ele is still far from complete. The main emphasis is on burning, CPC, and the major air runes. The rest can be tweaked plenty.

I concede, you thought that out way more than I had. Wasn't thinking about the combination of <%25 and the stun %50 at all. :lol

As for the rest, I have been overwhelmed with just Ele let alone the other professions. Never really been good at building/theorycrafting though, I'm more of a learn as it goes guy.

I was actually thinking about this today;

  • They're technically missing a third Soldier class and Paragons did wear heavier-looking armor.
  • There's no polearms in GW2 and Paragons used spears quite heavily. Introducing some polearms into the game would also benefit the other professions by giving them a new weapon class or two;

  • Spear (1 hand polearm) - Can be used with a shield or an off-hand weapon.
  • Javelin (off-hand polearm) - Would be thrown, I imagine.
  • Halberd (2 hand polearm) - would have a wide swing like the Greatsword / Hammer.
  • Adding lances and spears would be a nice compliment to the Mounted Combat they want to add too.

As for a unique mechanic, it might be cool if Paragons were enemy "Specialists". They would have a unique resource called "Insight" that they gain from specific attacks or actions, with the idea being that they are studying and learning their foe. This resource is then spent on three special "Command" abilities. The cool part is that the three abilities are enemy specific, and are tailored to the enemy you're targeting; Each enemy 'class' in the game would have a unique selection of Command abilities.

For example, if they use fire attacks, the Paragon gets anti-fire abilities. If they use stuns, the Paragon has anti-stun abilities. One command ability would always be a "Weakness Revealed", which increases the damage of everyone attacking that target.

They are essentially experts at shutting down whatever special abilities enemies have or delivering blows that are especially damaging to that specific enemy type. This becomes especially useful against Boss enemies, who could theoretically have their own unique set of Command abilities, some of which could be heavily tied to the environment.

For example, if you fight an enemy in a room with lava pools, one of the Command abilities might allow you to drag an enemy across the room and into one of the pools. The other professions can knock him into the pools and such too, but the Paragon has an ability that is specific to that encounter that is much easier to use.

Dunno, just tossing the idea out there. Before they announced the Thief was "Thief", I thought it might be cool if they were "Assassins" and had a mechanic like this; specific abilities tailored to assassinate their target.

Some nice suggestions. Looking at the thief they seem to be re-flavoured assassins just going by the Major Trait names and some of the skill icons.

Since there is no Paragon I'm juggling between the Warrior, Ranger, and the Thief.

All three are pretty tempting.

Here's the original suggestion from the Guru forums I made more than a year ago, before the Thief was actually revealed: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=514559&postcount=566

The assassin would have a unique 'Blood' energy type, obtained every time the assassin inflicts injury. As more blood that is drawn, more elaborate Assassination techniques can be utilized.

fU4Wd.jpg

Assassination techniques are not chosen by the player and appear in a separate UI element along with the Assassin's 'blood' gauge. Only three Assassination techniques are available at any given time.

Here's where things get interesting;

The three techniques that appear within the UI element are unique to each enemy type or player profession, and boss characters have special technique setups as well. The Assassination Techniques are not always damage-dealing;

  • - Could interrupt a specific attack that otherwise could not be interrupted.
  • - Could allow the Assassin to direct who the enemy is targeting, directing the enemy away from injured allies.
  • - Allow the Assassin to steal valuable healing items from the enemy's supply and toss them to wounded allies.
  • - Inflict unique debuffs specific to that encounter.
  • - Direct where Area Effect attacks will land, directing the damage away from players or forcing the target to injure other enemies.
  • - Control the position of the enemy temporarily by penetrating muscle and utilizing pressure points.

In essence, the Assassin Class is a decent melee class, but exceptionally strong Support because he or she ALWAYS has three abilities tailored SPECIFICALLY to whatever it is currently assassinating.

When you switch targets, the Assassination Technique UI element changes to reflect all the nasty ways they can apply training and knowledge of their prey against their newest victim.

Holy shit, reading over it for the first time since then, I notice I nailed the actual item stealing mechanic Thieves get. I still like the idea of leaping onto an enemy, hitting pressure points and taking temporary control of their positioning while you ride around on their back. Adapted to a Paragon, it would just be "Insight" instead of Blood, "Command" instead of "Assassination Technique", etc.

It's way too early for me to start tossing out random ideas for what ANet could do, I feel kinda lame doing it so I won't continue

The biggest thing I like about the build I'm going for is move ability - As a melee Elementalist I need to be able to get close and stay close, as the first ability in fire for daggers hits three times if you are close upon the enemy. Passive movement speed buffs help a lot too.

It sounds like a pretty tricky tactic. Gotta stay far enough away to avoid damage but also amass it on your target. I'm sure you'll be able to pull it off easily.

? The point is to be up close and personal with the damage. I imagine a lot of effects are multiple damage if up close. Check the second fire dagger ability.

That seems like the case so you could maximize damage with a little more risk but the dagger ability will assist you greatly.

Correct, I think the build is entirely reliant upon the skill of the player. Thinking using one with fire will work if you minimize uptime with the other attunements.

Anet has really created their own hyper-weird monster set for enemies in this game. It's refreshing.

Why do the Yogscast vids all have ~300 views? That can't be right, they all have over a thousand likes?

Youtube takes a while before it starts calculating views past that point.
