Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

Maybe they will let the NDA up after the weekend is over then reinstate it for the next? IDK.

I would like to hope so.

Yeah, I don't see why they decided on such a strict NDA for a closed beta where anyone can get invited for. With press closed betas you know most press guys have some kind of code of conduct and the chance of multiple people breaking the NDA is pretty slim. But with the next closed beta you just know there are going to be multiple people leaking videos and info on boards such as these. It just seems like a hassle having to go after all those people.

yeah wtf are they thinking why even bother with an NDA when they are letting in fans only....they have to know whats coming right?

fucking gold mine!

i really like this video i found on that site

http://youtu.be/VRME95qDOzw

if you dont speak german just mute it and put eye of the north music lol

Nice find, that's a great combination of footage with quite a few group events.

Well, don't make videos of the next closed beta, because it has a pretty strict NDA, you can't even tell people that you're in ;)

They really put an NDA on a beta with invites going to anyone? That just seems pointless.

Quick, blink twice if you got an invite!

My god. That was a great video. That huge swamp mob looked awesome. My jaw hit the floor near the end of the video .... starting with The Black Citadel, it put the city environment into perspective and showed exactly how detailed and vast the environments are.

There will definitley be leaks from the beta weekend. I'm guessing the NDA was put in place to stop people releasing pictures, videos etc with low settings on their crappy PCs and giving people the wrong impression.

That huge swamp monster was The Shadow Behemoth and you can fight him at level 15.

That's exactly why.

After watching numerous videos of different classes, some even played decently well, it's becoming even more unbearable: How many times must I watch a class video and go, "Oh I'm definitely making one of those!" and then watch another class and say the same thing? I've never seen anything like it in a MMO. I have always been able to focus on two or three classes, but... ugh...

I know how you feel... I dont know how anyone will ever get to level 80 because everyone will be playing all the classes at the same time lol. I kno i wanna play elementalist then guardian then necromancer... God save us all lol

Yea I think it's just done to simply control the information that gets released, even if only slightly controlled. I remember in the SWTOR beta someone filled the game on the lowest possible settings while running it on what I can only imagine was a toaster, then made an entire video about how fail the game was because of how it looked and how it performed.

ArenaNet has been really good about letting people see their game, letting fans talk about, letting videos go up and so on, a lot more than some other game companies have.

I'm in the same boat. I know for sure i want to play elementalist as my first character, but every other class just looks so appealing too and i love different aspects of all of them. I'm still undecided of which race to roll first as i have the same problem. Everything is too appealing!

Yeah, I've actually been looking at Engineer as one of my first 5 lately. I think it will be one of the most underplayed classes but man people are going to underestimate it, the diversity that class brings is INSANE. I made a defensive capture point build the other day, was quite fun to come up with.

At least a few people better make necros.

I thought my list of "Want to play" professions was pretty set, but lately it is just all up in the air. I want to play them all, even Warrior which for the most part I never play that type of class in any MMO's.

It's getting rather difficult to just want to play one character. Too much diversity within 1 class and then you look at all the rest and just want them all packaged into one. I was dead set on the Guardian for my first and probably still am but this is getting crazy. =)

Have we found out if there is any benefit at all to sticking with one character the whole time? The achievements being spread across the board might finally free me from thinking I can't re-roll due to losing progress but I want to make sure there isn't anything that DOESN'T transfer across accounts. Besides having to level up all over, of course.

Well if you're going to play PVP, you pretty much have to play at least 3-4 classes. I'm going with at least Ranger, Thief and Necro.

First five classes in order of making them:

Guardian, Mesmer, Elementalist, Warrior, Thief, Ranger

Seems weird to have a ranged attacker high up on my list, even though I love melee.

Tons of achievements and other things are account wide so play what you want, when you want. There's achievements like kill 1,000 WvW invaders, right now it's hard to say if it's account wide or per character, though I'd bet it's account wide. I think they're really trying to focus on the whole play whatever you want as much as possible and not force you to redo certain achievements on every character. They did this a lot in GW1 where some title tracks related to the story were per character and that made sense.

Yeah I'm familiar with that aspect and was pleasantly surprised. Didn't want to lose my progress in GW1 so I refused to ever create another character. Would feel weird to do more than one but if there is truly no downside to it... I'll have to wait until it comes out I suppose to find out for sure.

Nah, didn't touch it in GW1 and don't see myself doing it in 2. PVE 4 life!

I'm still going to play the shit out of the Guardian first because my GF is going to play the Engineer. She loves the Sylvari too!

WvW is like PVE except endless mobs to kill (players) :)

I think we are desperate for more details or something concerning this game. This is about the third time we have talked about order of play lists.

Concerning the skill points on maps and the challenges to get them. Do we know if those are the same for all professions and races? It would be cool if they varied them up and did some specific ones or maybe some group ones. It would be cool to see something like a group full of elementalists taking on an elemental to get a skill point.

I have decided. Engineer it is. The amount of different kinds of skills they get through both weapon combinations AND kits is insane. And they look fun too.

They're the same for everyone. Originally obtaining Traits had profession specific stuff like an Elementalist seeking out tomes to learn from. So they moved that over to how acquiring new skills worked, but tweaked it because they found that people were splitting up to go do their own profession stuff rather than staying to play together.

Oh and a new interview with Jon Peters:

Wish they would have sprinkled in some variations, but it does make sense to keep with the group play.

Thanks for the read, will read.

Edit: Pretty good read, but no real new info. I really like ANet's perspective on pvp and everytime I hear them talk about it I can't help but want a capture the flag style gametype. I really hope it's the second pvp gametype they bring out. This type of game with 5v5 and the different skills and builds of teams CTF would be so crazy and fun.

Why is this? I've always loved getting really good with one type instead of switching. Could never do the "alt" thing.

Well like GW1, this is still a team build game. If the team build (for example) needs 3 warriors, ele and ranger but you only want to play engineer, you're going to be left out.

If you really want to play just one class, of course you can do it. It's your game. And not every team build has to be something special that requires just those specific classes. But believe me, it's good being flexible in GW. You get to play more too because people want you in their team. :)

Just make another team build. GW2 is more flexible like that.

Eh...maybe. Still out of the following two options, there is one I prefer. A) Roll build which has been working great, user X rolls the required 5th character. B) Have to change build because user X can't roll the required character. Usually when B happens, you just go PUG.

But typically if you can find another build that works (which, as I said, is much easier than GW2 than other games because of the extremely modal nature of all classes/abilities/traits) - then you can run it. Especially if the class itself fits into the build anyway.

And remember - you have technically two specs - one PVE and PVP - and when you enter PVP the spec switches over to your PVP one. So people will be able to say "yeah, my PVP spec is X" and it fits with the build.

I played the original GW back when I was in college and haven't touched it since. It was connected to my old school e-mail that has since been closed down. I wonder if they'll help me get ahold of my old account so that I can play around until this releases.

I was more referring to people playing classes they already know how to play. Only really good PvP players just jump into unknown classes. It was like me trying to play flag runner in GW1...OMG... It takes too much time to make team builds with proper synergy. Coming up with a group of them is pretty rough. Usually you have a single team build and leech off a meta. And if you start scrambling, then you are pretty much running PUG. But many PvP players don't mind scrambling so that's not necessarily an evil.

If my friend and I start with different classes how long would it be until we could meet up?

I was wondering the same thing as my friends want to play different races then what i intend to for now. I'm pretty sure i read somewhere a while ago that you can get an Asura portal to another races starting area, i know you can from one capital to another so you could just run straight to the race capital, get the asura portal to your friends capital and then meet.

I think around 10 or 15 do you start meeting up? IDK.

One thing I'd like for you all to remember is that zones actually de-level you to the content - so even if you level up through other stuff, you can come back and experience other content while still feeling like it's fresh and fun.

This is why when they add new stuff to the game it'll be awesome, as everyone can experience it.

I am pretty sure you can meet up almost immediately after the intro tutorial instance. Once out of the intro you can just hop into an asura gate and meet up. Of course your personal story quests will still be waiting for you back in your homeland (though you and your friend can do those together)

This game has surpassed Diablo 3 as my most looked forward to, and I wouldn't have thought that was possible a few months ago.

I'm pretty sure I'll be starting with a Charr Engineer, followed up by (in constantly shifting order) an Elementalist, Mesmer, and Warrior.

The big thing for me is that it's so fundamentally different than other MMOs that it really has killed any interest in playing any other MMOs because of the simple fact that it is not Guild Wars 2.

Agreed. I'm still playing Swtor to kill time with some other games and every video I see about GW2 makes me want to smash Swtor with a hammer. Kind of sad really.

Once you finish the tutorial (5, 10, 15 min depending on the player) you can go to an Asura gate in your home city right nearby and take it to Lion's Arch which has Asura portals to every other city. So it all depends on how fast you do the tutorial and I assume you meant different races because all races can be all classes.

Well I have two friends who are on the fence about it even with all the videos I've showed them. The last ditch effort i'm going to do is just stream the game for them when it releases. Twin hammers Max!

Why do you need to play 3-4 classes for PvP? I definitely plan on playing 2 (Thief for ganking stragglers and supply lines, Engineer for keep defense/taking.......Speaking in terms of WvW. I won't step foot in "organized PvP").
