Also the walkers coming from the city to the outskirts is WTF. They were chasing a helicopter for miles, really? :|
They bump into each other which gives them a general direction to go in. Unless there's food, it's constantly aimless
 
Why doesnt someone just drive off the farm and fire off a bunch of shots then drive back around them? Wouldn't they just keep walking away from the farm?

They started because of the helicopter sound.

Then just kept going in that direction. There's no following, they just go.

Exactly, they explained it in the comic but the basic jest is there. You get a group moving on instinct towards activity. They just keep walking till they get bored picking up stragglers as they move. Then more noise activity makes them move again growing bigger and bigger each time. Gunshots from the same location consistently will eventually echo and draw them there.
