It was cute and all with Lion King doing great, but now that a 3D re-release is taking a prime summer slot (Jurassic Park), it's not cute anymore. I LOVE Jurassic Park, but nah. This can't be going on.

Is Hunger games really supposed to attract the Twilight/teen crowd??

I say this because around my campus people have been talking about seeing it and supposedly the books are violent and not really a love story focus like Twilight series.

I am interested in seeing it just based on word of mouth but dont want to walk into a teen drama garbage fest.

It's definitely helped by the fact that its the first decent blockbuster of the year and its getting rave reviews. People wanna watch movies, but NOTHING has made a decent buzz all year.

Great movie too for men and women of all ages, unlike everyone trying to pigeonhole the movie into the "teenage-girls" category. It seems to have appealed to everyone.

EDIT: This is exactly what I'm talking about...

Where are you getting this considering 40% were males and over half the box office came from people over 25? It's a very backhanded and cheap way to mock the movie. Although the books might be popular amongst the "young adult" crowd, the movie has obviously appealed to everyone, and the trailers have been great. Men and women both wanna go out and watch this movie.

Personally, I've never read the books nor cared to; it's just the movie seemed appealing, the trailers looked good, and it got great reviews...what more do people want?

parents taking their little kids to the movies perhaps?

Titanic will also be rereleased in 2D. I wouldn't be surprised if Jurassic Park ended up the same.

the books may be violent but its hard to call the movie violent when you cant see a thing due to shaky cam

Titanic is also rereleasing at the time of the sinking's 100th anniversary, so that could help it as well. The film itself is definitely a different experience seen in the theater, so I think people will go see it again for that... along with people who never got a chance to see it in theater to begin with.

Sigh.

I guess I'll have to accept nothing will top Cameron's escapades.

But nothing will ever ever stop me from the seething raw and giganticly large hatred I have for Titanic. A massive scale of hate.

you are just trolling, lol. Act of Valor is raking in money.

Wow, am guessing not by much? that is really impressive. I never thought the movie will make that much.

Dark Knight edged it out by 3 million, but Hunger Games is the best opening for a non sequel.

Hunger Games male audience: Is it possible to get figures on the % of males who went by themselves vs males who were dragged by their female partners/relatives?

Great job on 21 Jump Street, easily the best comedy of 2012 so far.

The books ramp up the violence as the series continues, with the third book being violent enough they're either going to film large sections with lens smeared with grease and the camera shaking violently, or tone it way down. The love triangle also ramps up as things go on. They take place from the first-person-perspective of a girl with two guys basically fawning over her. It's just unlike the chick in Twilight, Katniss doesn't constantly need the boys to save her from getting assaulted on the street/falling over her own feet/other dumb shit.

It's a step forward for books aimed at the Twilight crowd, introducing elements you can enjoy from outside that demo, but it's still targeted at them.

holy shit at hunger games. are the books HP 'bad' or Twilight 'bad'? meaning the former is enjoyable while the latter isn't.

Trying to draw comparisons to either is really doing the content a disservice. The first book is much closer in tone to 1984 then Twilight or HP. It's really not a tween romance novel at all, and the marketing didn't try to sell it like one. Now, I'm not saying Collins' writing is good (it isn't), but Katniss isn't some star-crossed romantic searching for the right man in her life. The film is pretty dark for PG-13.

Edit: And spoiler for the "romance":
It's more subtle in the movie, but Katniss' affection for Peeta in the first book is almost entirely manufactured for the cameras. The Hunger Games are reality television where a good story gets you more sponsors, and sponsors send people in the arena useful gifts and survival items. So although Peeta genuinely likes her, she pretends to like him to get food and medicine. In the end, he is super pissed to discover her complete ambivalence towards him. And President Snow is SUPER pissed to discover that Katniss' final act in the arena was out of defiance, rather than love, which he figures out pretty quickly.

Eh... like the above poster said, I'd rather see Jurassic Park in the theater again than the Avengers :)

Then re-release it in the dead months when nothing big is coming out. I want to see it in the theater too, but these re-release successes are starting to get to the studio's heads.

A better thread title would have been "John Carter takes an arrow to the neck and a tracker jacker sting to the nuts".

Quite honestly... Hollywood hasn't been that great in the last 10 years, so it doesn't really bother me.

does this mean the chances of a american battle royale remake just got bigger? can totally see it coming with a headline like "this time they are hungry for blood" lol.

but seriously, consider me interested. i dont know the books, didnt know about the movie until some weeks ago. but i like the general idea. so i will give i try.

My god what a monster.
and for many of us it came out of nowhere. I first heard about this movie no more than 2 weeks ago and I love movies and follow news. Just a total monster of a franchise. There's only 3 books tho so they can't milk it for 6 or 7 films like Potter and Twilight.

wow at the hunger games

also lol @ at these corny ass thread titles the OP comes up with.

They're part of the charm :(

What the hell is The Hunger Games? And why is this my first time hearing about it?

Hunger Games has been tracking for $100+m for a few weeks so it's not really a surprise it crossed that mark. However I did not think it would cross $150m.

I read the book summaries and it seems very bland imo... but I guess the teens/Twilight crowd love it.

I know many adults who like Hunger Games Trilogy too and individuals of all ages are reading the books. As was the same with Twilight.
But I think the slight difference is that The Hunger Games is more capable of appealing to males as well as females because it doesn't have sparkling vampires.
I'm an adult and I like both but like/respect The Hunger Games more because it is darker and has a more relevant message overall.

It worked for Harry Potter and Twilight. Expect all book adaptations to be like this from now on.

Well of course it's going to work when the other films were all big hits. It's not like the audience who watched the previous films are going to bail because of it.

The question is will this be the most front loaded movie of the year?

There's still a Twilight move coming out. So, no.

Plus the A rating signifies this has great reception. I wouldn't be surprised if HG has better legs than people think. The Saturday drop already suggests it.

Amazing, Battle Royale for kids does over 200 million first weekend worldwide.

I wonder how Takami and the likes feel about it.

So the Hunger Games is actually a decent movie? Seems to have gotten some good reviews, I had gotten the impression that it's some Twilight worthy shit, maybe I shouldn't have read... certain people's opinions.

Why does the Topic of John Carter keep on coming up? I guess I'm out of the loop, actually liked it and was sad to see it do so poorly.
No surprise about the final book likely being split into two films. It is actually fitting, there is more than enough content for two movies there.

Because it's the biggest bomb of all time. Some people love reveling in schadenfreude, especially when it involves a company like Disney.

Wow @ Hunger Games. I didn't hear about it until a few weeks ago when Good Morning America was pimping it, and had no clue it was a book or anything like that.

I'm getting old.

Hunger Games is still unknown overseas so not that surprising. It will be the sequel that explodes.

I'd expect Catching Fire to probably double what HG makes overseas.
