Toonami on right now!? Is this an April Fool's troll?

The thing is, if syfy was recently able to sustain an anime block, I have faith that current cn could as well.
Syfy was only able to maintain their block because 1) it was only 1-2 hours a week, and 2) it was basically fully subsidized by Starz. They only got a couple shows ever from other companies (like Gurren Lagann).

That said, tonight's lineup was basically a Funimation lineup, other than Bleach and Gundam Wing. Maybe there's room for that business model to work.

I'm pretty sure they knew how popular it was. They just made a lot of really bad decisions with their show choices around the middle of the last decade and eventually found themselves completely dependent on Naruto to sustain the block. Which was okay for a little while, but then Naruto committed suicide with something like 85 straight episodes of really bad filler, so bad that they canned it before they even reached the return of canon and Naruto Shippuuden (in fact I don't think the last few episodes of the first Naruto anime have ever aired on American television).

Naruto self-destructing pretty much doomed Toonami.

Hold on.

You're telling me they made a show with 80 EPISODES OF FILLER?

EDIT: You weren't even exaggerating.

Holy shit.

Toonami came at a time when the industry was in flux.
Same in Pro Wrestling...
Same in Music...
Socity in general.

You dont have the right pieces in place to have Toonami come back. Crunchy hasnt been d-balled. Socity is so hypcrital to the point that even the same Midwestern Mothers who years ago railed against a block like this would have there daughters parade near naked on a womans network. You have so many musical acts using J-Pop tropes then saying their main infuences are MJ, Whitney, Tupac and Biggie? CM Punk got it but then Vince came in and shut the whole thing down...

So yeah, it was nice of them to do that. But AS doing Toonami full time with the way things are? No way. Give it time.

Well...

I wish they'd do this every week. Get one of the good Tenchi series instead, and I don't have much nostalgia for Astro Boy or Gigantor, but other than that it was great.

The Bleach producers learned from Naruto and have wisely chosen to go on hiatus rather than have more than a year of filler episodes. (The manga is currently in the early stages of a final arc.)

Wasnt there a vampire arc or something that was pretty much filler?

(I don't watch the show so i really have no idea)

It was amazing. I'm glad I caught most of it and hope the viewers + feedback grab CN's attention to bring Toonami back for good.

Wow 60 pages overnight. We love toonami that's for sure, so do I, I was watching shows I've never bothered with before because I was higher than a kite off nostalgia.

People PLEASE STOP posting that stream or typing the link. Certain people have been banned for that. Use PMs.

And yes, I got home from picking up the old folks. Like when I was a kid, my parents ruin all my animation watching.

So here's how I feel

Seriously though if you want to live vicariously through others, hit up tumblr and check the toonami tag.

What an amazing DBZ episode. Cheese and all.

It's bizarre how terrible the more modern Bleach episode preceding it was by comparison.

It would be great if Adult Swim showed Toonami every Saturday night vs just an April Fools "prank", but I couldn't see the block doing well long term with the old 90s Funimation line up.

What they should do is make it a web series. Where they'll put up a new block every Saturday online, with all new material from Tom.

Shit, what a ride.

Although this was an April Fool's day joke, there's no doubt in my mind that Cartoon Network is definitely going to look over at all this fan reaction, great buzz, and loads of social-media hype, all coming in at a time of day that usually shouldn't get that kind of attention for a TV block.

When you're getting "bring TOONAMI back" tweets at like 5 AM, then I think you have something on your hands. Something old fans want to see, and something that will draw new fans as well. You see, no matter how old something is, quality is quality. People remember these series not only because they were a big part of their childhood, but because all these shows were truly special. They all had these underlying, intangible parts that worked together to give us hours of entertainment, with stories we couldn't forget, and characters we all loved and hated.

I think it's obvious that people want this back, now it's up to CN to see if they do bring it back, but more importantly is how they bring it back. Is it going to be all classic anime that was previously on the show, or will they try to infuse it with new blood? Only time can tell, but I'm really hoping tonight proved that this is special to people, and CN have a huge base of possible fans that are willing to return, if not just for a few hours every Saturday night to see their old friend TOM.

Personally, I want to thank all you Gaffers for making this so special. The commentary was superb throughout the whole run, and I loved all the enthusiasm and excitement. You all are alright in my book.

They wont bring it back.

They would still need a regular television block in order to pull in new/younger fans who aren't familiar with Toonami. But I do like your idea of having a new block every Saturday, as that would help keep the old content "fresh" since we would never know exactly what shows they would be showing.

They wont bring it back.

I don't know, maybe they will, maybe they won't; all I'm saying is that a lot of people were excited about it, and CN got a lot of positive buzz out of it.

Steven Blum wants to do it again, so it's not like they'd have to return without their TOM. The pieces are definitely there, now it's up to CN to see if they actually want to play the game or not.

Maybe they could like, do it as a recap of their most popular shows from Monday (Adventure Time) and Friday (Young Justice) along with classic/new anime.
That should help with numbers.
Show it on Saturday nights before AS.

Yeah, I wanna know this too.

I went to bed after Gundam Wing but I'm guessing that it was probably all earlier Toonami shows. If you like Bobobo but haven't been able to see it, the first half of the series is finally coming out on DVD in a couple of weeks. I'm more excited about this than I should be.

Just like I said before, all CN has to do is re-purpose their current Saturday night anime block as "Toonami, on Adult Swim". Throw in new Tom bumpers/game reviews, throw together a few new music videos, and license just a couple of older/classic anime to air alongside the newer stuff. Boom, instant ratings. Their current Saturday night viewership won't care about the new look, as long as they get to see their Bleach and Durarara and whatnot. So it won't cost them any viewers. CN really has nowhere to go but up with this.

They won't bring it back unless they determine that Toonami would be more profitable than Adult Swim in the male 18 - 49 demographic or with the children 6 - 12 demographic compared to whatever block it is they have these days. One of the reasons Toonami was eventually axed was because it had started to skew older in an attempt to grow with its audience (during the Kenshin/YYH era), but its audience was moving out of late elementary school/middle school and into the high school demographic, which Cartoon Network's primary advertisers didn't care about. So CN tried creating Miguzi to recapture the kids demographic and booted Toonami to Saturday night, refocusing the block on the 9-14 demographic (which is a harder sell than 6 - 12) by letting shows have curse words and extra blood and leading into Adult Swim, but the time slot plus a bad slate of shows (and endless Naruto filler) eventually killed it.

Now the original Toonami watchers are older, so they may be a profitable market for Adult Swim, but that would sort of require splitting the brand. And once the old school shows ran through once, can they guarantee that the viewers are going to stick around for new anime?

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. What do they really have to lose, when you look at all they possibly have to gain?

They should have a new anime every other week. So that will mean two episodes per month for each show except for the commons like Bleach... Bring toonami back as how it was originally ie. a retro action block with new shows sprinkled around.

Man, fucking Gohan killing Cell. Soooooooo good.

And Vegeta's excuse with him saying he wasn't scared while watching the fight.

Yeah it was a solid ending fight to close out the Cell saga for sure. That Vegeta moment, whenever he hits Cell so Gohan can finish Cell off, is fucking just as awesome every single time I see it.

I'll say this, I don't know if it's because they just hit in the middle of the series, but nostalgia made me think they better than it actually was. The DBZ episode shown was terrible to me, and Tenchi was just silly imo. I didn't remember the voices in Tenchi being so damn annoying, and the animation seemed a bit sub-par to me. These were shows that I loved too, although I'll say that I think I always started to dislike Tenchi as the series got more and more ridiculous.
