Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

Edit: How in the hell do I always end up being the first post at the top of a new page? Oh well, no news lately, just some little tidbits from the EU Fanday (the biggest being that the Pre-Purchase Beta access has no NDA) and a new GAF Podcast tomorrow night or early Wednesday.

Never once expected that kind of event...all of a sudden I woke up to a...whoa...

What happened to the world?

Exactly. GW starts off almost as a generic caricature of fantasy worlds; pretty green landscapes, undead-filled ruins, quaint little country towns where you need to help farmers get rid of pesky monsters...

Then the Searing hits and it's like "What happened?!" I swear, somebody at ANet spent a lot of time getting Pre-Searing Ascalon just long enough to be endearing and memorable before they kick you in the teeth and rip it away from you. Hell, I didn't play GW1 that much and I still look at the Searing thing as one of those suckerpunch gaming moments.

To be fair, the rest of guild wars is still demons, undead, elementals, dragons, etc.

The tweest of prophecies was tweesty but the rest of the game is hardly groundbreaking worldbuilding.

I look at it this way. Imagine if you had been in the GW1 beta and they dropped The Searing on you. That'd be kind of a spoiler, right? Maybe the Sylvari or Asura have some big event or disaster that affects everyone on that kinda level and they want to keep it under wraps.

Very good point. Seeing that all my toons will be Asura, I'm pretty damned happy about the decision.

Max, you so crazy!

I found it very fun due to attempting to retake Ascalon but ultimately escaping. It's in Kryta that you are suddenly thrust into a new adventure. It had to take until Nightfall and Eye of the North to bring a lot of things full-circle to an extent.

Anyone else slowly losing interest in Gw2 after reading and watching all of the info released over the last few weeks? I feel like I played the game to death lol.

If anything I went from "mildly interested" to "seriously considering preordering the collector's edition when I can".

I'm not too worried about this either considering it changes often what the events are. Which is awesome!

Its not really that I'm worried about seeing too much, it's more the fact that I would rather just experience it at this point. I never really care about spoilers in games, but with gw2 I kind of want to wait and see how events progress.

I've been hearing both sides about how combat can be like watching milk curdle or be pretty vicious.

Now granted I'm a story-type of guy because I love game lore and exploration. My hope is to be able to jump in and heroically join a bunch of other folks attempting to take down whatever is nearby attacking villages, undead enemies, etc. I don't want to stop constantly and keep resurrecting people because they...stand in fire.

Even if I'm a level 5, and I can't do much damage against a world event boss or something, I'd at least take some initiative by going around and resurrecting other higher level members so they can get back in the fight, and maybe I'll go put out some fires.

My fear is...will I hate the combat? Or can I explore without being too harassed by multiple spawns blocking my path? I just defeated Goblin A! Yet...Goblin B spawns 30 feet down below...yay...

The combat is not going to be boring unless you're really bad at this game, but it won't blow your socks off either I imagine.

Basically, exaggerations gonna exaggerate.

Honestly, it's an MMO, and it's a Guild Wars game. The first game had a pretty massive amount of content, and this game looks like it has even more. These games are meant to keep you interested for hundreds of hours... we probably haven't even seen 0.0001% of the content in the game :P

True, but I'm still losing interest for some reason.

I get this feeling from time to time, but I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that all we've been able to do so far is watch people play. I expect to get really into it when I can actually play it myself. I don't think MMOs are typically that exciting to watch.

Tomorrow's podcast will be covering:

  • News Roundup from the Week
  • Upcoming Pre-purchase date and discussion
  • Covering the NeoGAF Guild and what you can expect
  • Fun!

Also, the EU Fanday is today, and European game sites and such will be talking about GW2 soon. Here's who they got to talk with today:

Eric Flannum (Lead Game Designer), Colin Johanson (Lead Content Designer), Ree Soesbee (Writer and Lore & Continuity Designer), Kristen Perry (Character Artist), Josh Petrie (Tools Developer) and Matthew Moore (Lead Q&A)

Sweet. Looking forward to this! This is happening 9:30pm EST, right? So that would be 8:30pm in Texas?

Yeah, that's what I'm still hoping for too, and I agree.

I've been farther than that - having played the game itself, I've grown even more interested in the game, in fact before I got to try the beta I was a wildfire of hype and anticipation, but after delving into it, I'm more of a tempered, focused, pointy end of awesome ready for the sweetness.

The game has so much to offer and there's no real way of consuming it all except playing it.

Watching videos will only serve to enlighten you about the basics.

If you are suffering from anything, it's the fact that the unknown is becoming known, and humans in general always lose a certain amount of passion, not interest, for what they are doing once things become rational and understandable. It's how people are.

Tends to be cyclical. Follow development too long and that will happen. Even if/when I get into beta I'll probably not play a crazy amount. Once servers go live though it's like flipping a switch and i go into game mode.

Have they releases minimum specs yet? I'm hoping my C2D 3.0, 8GB DDR2 and 6870 will at least be able to run between medium-high (obviously not ultra or anything).

I think so yes, the beta is said to not have much of the optimization yet and runs pretty hard but word is they were buying old gfx cards off ebay to make sure it would run on most hardware when released.

Think the min specs were around the HD3000 level iirc

I think these are the only ones we have seen so far.

Windows® XP Service Pack 2 or better
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, Core i3, AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 or better
Nvidia GeForce 7800 , ATI Radeon X1800 ,Intel HD 3000 or better ( 256 mb of video RAM and shader model 3.0 or better )
25 GB available HDD space
Broadband Internet connection
Keyboard and mouse.

Make sure you got that mouse and keyboard.

When it's ready. (tm)

"So Colin, what you have to say about the release date?"

I love this one. I rather enjoyed some of the information released by rubi. By giving us an idea that they're not going to release all of the content in the beta's make sense. This probably is the reason why we haven't seen much Asura and Sylvari content. Show us a little bit at a time and keep us salivating for more!

I've not checked on this thread in a week or so. Have I missed anything big/cool? Too many videos to watch, not enough time etc.

Nothing really new to be honest. Anet just had a fan day which is nice but other than that, it's just another day closer to the release. =)

Yeah, I'm pretty patient for it, although I do occasionally hit up a video. I want to be ready and relaxed, just simply enjoying making my way through the village/city/whatever.

Just checked up on the CE pre purchase retailers. Incredibly disappointed to still see Zavvi as the only retailer in the UK. Are they just actively looking for ways to fuck over the fans? :/

Awesome. Thanks. I will be building a new PC after my exams end in mid May, so hopefully GW2 is released pretty sharpish after that.

One issue I've seen that was brought up in the recent TB video was that as ranged, there really wasn't much danger compared to melee for PvE. I'm not sure how this will work for later levels but it did look like the risk/reward for melee and ranged was pretty wide.

I think in the 20+ we'll start seeing mobs run in packs that have a mix of melee/ranged in them that run different tactics when a player is melee or ranged. Also, I expect a lot more weapon swapping from humanoid mobs down the line to help combat melee/ranged.

I'm trying to convince my former TOR-guild to relocate to another game. Is there a specific article or video somewhere where I can help convince them regarding gw2?

I think mostly everyone is kinda burned out on MMO's after WoW and Star Wars. I'm hoping to reignite some enthusiasm.

The official manifesto is probably your best bet if you're looking for an official piece of marketing work... if you're looking for fan-based stuff I'd say check out Totalhalibut on youtube.

ArenaNet just updated their Facebook page, adding 13 Milestones to their timeline for Guild Wars and a "Development of Guild Wars 2 announced" item to their GW2 page.

Probably nothing important, just some PR guy making adjustments for the Timeline (if you're going to be forced to have it, you might as well use it, right?). But it could also be somebody getting ready to add other, more important dates to the thing...

... but probably not.

GameStop posted the CE Pre-Order online now. Called their corporate help center and was told that any order placed online does NOT count as a Pre-Purchase. So I went to my local brick and mortar GameStop.

When I got there I talked to the guy who remarked they finally had it in their system. At first he said he only wanted some percentage down, then I told him that I needed to pay in full to get considered "pre-purchase" so he charged me the full $161 (with tax). He said they didn't have any info on the boxes/pre-purchase stuff yet, but I told him they'd likely get all that stuff in on the 10th. He remarked I should call them back on the 10th and see if it had arrived yet.

Guess that's what I'm doing. GameStop has no clue what's going on right now, as I had to inform them of everything. Hopefully they don't fuck this up for me.
