Game Informer May 2012 Cover revealed: Halo 4

Yup. Here's all 3 frames we have of it too:

Wait... people are actually believing the game is gonna look like that?! El Oh El.

I feel like we go through this every single time a new Halo is released. It's hyped to look amazing, everyone believes it, and then the actual game comes out. And while decent/serviceable - and far from bad - the games are never "jaw-dropping". But the next time, we go through the same old cycle.

*MAAAYBE* that's an in-game model. I can imagine that. But the DoF (on other shots) adds quite a bit to the look, and that won't be there. No way will the shadows be that good. That lighting is the best I've ever seen on a console; no way will it be that good in when you're playing it. But I feel like everyone ignores the biggest issue - the up-rezzed sub-720p visuals, lack of decent AA, and a sub-30 framerate. I'd bet money that that .gif is not an honest representation of how the game will look when you're playing this fall on the X360.

And, I like what other people have done here. For some reason, you can't come and post negative truths about Halo without being called a troll or a CoD-lover. So, like others have done, here ya go:

I *LOVED* Halo back in the day. Probably thousands of hours lost in the first two games. And while college and life in general kept me from playing the later games a whole lot, I still bought each of them - in their Limited Edition forms - during each midnight launch. Halo is a great series. Like I said earlier, it's easily one of the best shooters, period. I hate the gametypes that Bungie chooses for matchmaking; but the core gameplay is ridiculously tight, and production values and options are insane.

But c'mon, guys; outside of the very first game, Halo has never been an amazing looking game. Serviceable? Yes! Good? Sure. Pretty? I can give you that! But the jaggies, poor framerate, and low resolution absolutely knock it several notches from the top. Again, like I said earlier, games like Killzone 3, Gears of War 3 (though, dem jaggies again), and outside of shooter, Uncharted 3, God of War 3, and Forza 4 look leaps and bounds better than Halo.

Maybe 343 will somehow blow me away. I mean, I have to admit, I haven't seen it yet, and I haven't played it yet. But I'm extremely doubtful. And furthermore, this is on a console-only playing field. After seeing Battlefield 3 on my PC at 1920x1200, with 4x AA, 8x AF, and a steady ~40+ fps; there is absolutely no way Halo 4 is gonna make my "jaw-drop." And with that, I know for certain Game Informer is being hyperbolic.

you dont have all halo novels troll troll etc
On topic halo 1 and 2 were beautiful games and lightning is halo3 was great but the sacrifices they have made to achieve that are not worth it!

That looks like a very crisp shadow, so it's probably not a shadow-map.
It could totally be an illusion of the missing-frames and video quality(so I'm not claiming this with any certainty), but what I see in the 3 frames looks like standard shadowmap resolution artifacts(with good filtering).
Self-shadow on the arm suggests shadow-"pixels" spanning half of the arm's width, and the ground silhouette is noticeably aliasing as well.

They should make a stealth/shooter Crysis style combo game where you play as Arbiter dispensing judgement on heathens.

I'd buy an Xbox for that.

Listening to podcasts I learned many game journalists do not play PC games. So they may genuinely be blown away.

Very conflicted. Also very interested in seeing how this game turns out. The multiplayer sounds cool too.

Yo let's talk about gameplay features that might be revealed rather than tiny graphical fucking details...for once please let's get away from the graphics.

I for one think we'll see this whole ability/"perk" stuff we've heard about. And I put perk in quotes because that term was used by the journalists and not 343. I feel like it's going to be a big part of Halo 4 so I think we'll get it fully fleshed out in the cover story. I'm really curious to see how what exactly it is and how it's gonna work. I also think, in stock gametypes we'll see multiple rifles available from the outset. AR, BR, DMR and maybe a carbine or some forerunner weapon we don't know. I also hope that this article will reveal more maps as well.

Thoughts on what we'll see?

I personally am still hoping for a Clan War mode that is basically Red vs Blue version of ChromeHounds Online system.

(which sadly is not going to happen)

That the game covered would be interesting and make me go: 'Niiiiiiiiceee wooow'. It is not and it did not.

So you made up your own mind about what Gameinformer said. They just said "screenshots are gorgeous" - nothing more. And we have not seen them yet.

I mostly request 343i to invest on making the community tighter.
I don't have a lot of friends playing Halo, and month after month, DLC after DLC, Reach has become unplayable to me because there are simply not enough people online on the playlists I'm looking at.

Since 343i is building a career into MP mode, I wish they would implement things that make it possible to encourage players to regroup into playlists, maybe by mixing the gametypes or at least prompting you to join a team as soon as you go to MP, before you start looking at playlists. having the sense you're needed could help getting people play gametypes they are not used to.

As far as MP modes are concerned, i would love a Forerunner mode.
Probably fighting off Flood, ala invasion but with a flavor of firefight.
Organising the environment, using sentinels and other robots. Huge map. Sphinxes.
With waves, each getting bigger opponents but granting you extra supplies.
Ability to use an engineer in the team to build th terrain to help defend it would be awesome.
The game mode could even be class based but with a set minimum of "regular" soldiers.

I don't know, having clans seems a good idea. Reach's biggest problem was dispersion.
Clans could get you a bonus, or at least you would know how you fit in the team with your abilities if the gametrack other claners abilities. Could have a clan skill tree, and the game could actually launch request for gamers with required skills to jon the clan.

All in all I want a big trigger happy family.
getting into a game fast with motivated players >>> gametype/weapons selection/abilities.

Of course the game has to be balanced, fun and whatever but most of all it needs to encourage peopleplaying together.

CoD has so many players, you always get a quick game. Halo not so much.

I think leaps and bounds is pushing it. But just in the case of Reach. I was very disappointed in 3's graphics. But Reach looks very good. I think it's a top tier graphical game, but not THE best.

I think the style of game Halo is, EG open, prevents it from being the best looking game anymore. Then again, Crysis 2 is fairly open and among the best so I dont know.

Also, too the several recent comments talking about sub 720, Halo 4 is confirmed to be full 720P, not that it matters all that much imo. Not like any of us play these games on a 720P native display anyway, they're all upscaled to our 1080P HDTV's.

lol wow i was playing halo CE on PC in 1600x1200 years before halo 3, i didnt know halos werent HD on console how lame

What is "HD"? No true PC gamer would consider any 720P game "HD" it would seem, so none of this gen's games (save the two or three 1080P ones) are next gen.

There no hard and fast definition for HD. 1152X720 is HD imo, compared to 640X480.

Next gen consoles will likely move to 1080P, but PC's will probably move to 2560. So yet again we wont be playing "HD" games, because the goalposts are always moving...

But I'm pretty sure somebody from 1984 would consider Halo 3 "HD".

I'm glad to see that there are people here that don't fall for the "HD" marketing bullshit. So what if 1152x640 isn't "HD", it's still a much higher res than 640x480.

Why are people posting their collections? Just because you can buy everything, doesn't mean you're a bigger fan than me or anyone.

i have the halo 360 slim, very nice. love the sound it makes when you press the eject button. :D

Halo threads often make me feel like I've somehow stepped into gamespot system wars.

It's bizarre no other game gets as much venom shot it's way. Even the CoD ranting is nullified by the fact it's on multiple systems. But this is an exclusive. Those beacons that cheer some and give the green eyed monster to others and when we haven't even seen any of it for an extended time, what a few seconds worth of video at most. It's mind boggling that people are bitching over a magazine cover and not it's contents which none of us unless we have the new GI have seen inside yet.

Hopefully screenshots come soon so this thread can move on a bit.

Listen to this man, exactly my point of view regarding Halo´s graphics hype. Now, i think every Halo game looked good when it came out, i mean Halo 3 had shitty image quality but back then it wasn´t that bad. Reach looks okay...but for an "AAA" game and a franchise that big it looks meh in my opinion. Especially nowadays with games like Killzone 3 and Uncharted. And that GIF, well i think what can be seen there is quite possible, just use some extreme lighting settings and highres texture and thats it. Except for the shadow, i haven´t seen a console game that has such good looking shadows and does what Halo is supposed to be doing. PC gaming spoiled me i guess :P

So do we have an estimated date for when the magazine will drop at customers or retailers?
Any change people will get it today or tomorrow?

Resistance 3 is the better looking game.

Better art style, less jagged, less blurry and it runs like butter.

Crysis 2 is a damn mess.

how does such incredible ignorance not get banned.

1. less jagged? nope.

In line with previous Resistance games, the RSX chip's quincunx anti-aliasing (QAA) is in play. However, the coverage seems to be blitzed by the post-process effects, so within minutes of the game starting you will be noticing some pretty blatant aliasing that is only emphasised by the upscaling. While the QAA is definitely there, it's hard to find in many cases and the impression you get from playing the game is that there's little anti-aliasing in evidence at all in most cases.
Crysis 2 uses post processing aa so the anti aliasing occurs after tone mapping and effects.

2. less blurry? nope

we see that native resolution has dropped significantly, down from the 1280x704 of Resistance 2 to a mere 960x704 - a 25 per cent drop
making it one of the lowest resolution ps3 games to date

3. runs like butter? nope

it runs smoother than crysis 2 but for such a low resolution game 60hz would have been expected but instead R3 is 30hz and still incurs frequent drop frames.

That's hard to believe. Even CoD fans hate CoD.

I'm not saying I'm a bigger fan. It's just me showing how much I love the games :).

The sounds are a nice bonus, but after so many times using the console I ain't noticing them anymore.

Yea but with Reach looking as good ("serviceable" if you insist) as it does, and H4 undoubtedly looking better, that's enough for me to get HYPE.

Some people are mixing up "I think this game looks great" with "I think that's the best looking game ever on any system".
Every Halo game has improved over it's predecessor (technically, art is subjective) and I don't understand why we shall not be allowed to express that.

I don't know. Based on tech, I guess not, but what floored me about Halo wasn't the texture quality or such, but rather moments like driving out onto the landscape in the Halo level. I hope they can replicate that somehow, then my jaw will drop.

The thing i'm most excited about is that this is a new team doing Halo, that's why all the talk about what Halo used to look like is pretty pointless imo. If Bungie was still making them i could see the need but this is 343i's baby now.

This is what i want as well. Hopefully this new planet gives us an opportunity to do things like that again.

My most enduring memories of the first HALO are just exploring the levels in a warthog.

That too. Not really interested in MP (I suck at console shooter), but I hope the campaign get's a nice shakeup from the guys. TOM FRENCH!

Exactly this...even if Halo 4 looks exactly like Reach with just a better lighting engine and a proper AA solution this time game will look amazing.

Reach did so many things right visually and considering the scale which is unparalleled in consoles FPS games even with it's flaws the game was a technical achievement on the 360...the amount of detail in the enemies and especially the amount and quality of those crazy looking particles looked so much better than anything I've seen on the consoles.

Is it OK toe be excited about this? Because I am. I really want to see what 343 are capable of.

Apparently Master Chief is holding an AR, the game won't have ADS and you can run BF3 on Ultra settings on PC at 1080p at ~40-60fps so it's safe to say that we shouldn't be excited about Halo 4.

I found flying around the AotCR and Two Betrayals levels in a Banshee and dropping bombs on scrubs a lot more exciting :D

Can't wait to see this in real-time, fake-time or bullet-time.
I have hard time believing this is in game, just because the lighting. Even though Frankie already said everything in trailer from SP is in game its still kinda hard to believe it. David Ellis tweeted that picture couple days ago with a smile so who knows...
