The NPD Group has revealed the top ten best selling games in the United States for the month of March.

The best selling titles of the month, in order, are:

1. Mass Effect 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
2. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (360, PS3)**
3. MLB 12: The Show (PS3, Vita)
4. NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PC, PS2)
5. SSX (360, PS3)
6. Street Fighter x Tekken (360, PS3)**
7. Mario Party 9 (Wii)
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)**
9. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations (360, PS3)
10. Major League Baseball 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, NDS, PSP, PC, PS2)

While exact sales numbers have not been made publicly available, NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes that "Mass Effect 3 sold more than twice as much as did Mass Effect 2 during its introductory month in January 2010." Back then, EA revealed that Mass Effect 2 sold more than two million copies in its first week, meaning at least four million copies of Mass Effect 3 have been sold-in to retailers (though sold-through numbers to consumers have yet to be announced). Update: Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg reports that Mass Effect 3 sold 943,000 units on Xbox 360, outselling the PlayStation 3 version 4 to 1.

Their math is wrong. EA's 2 million is worldwide. NPD is referring to U.S. sales, which was a little over half a million.

lol ign

-their own jessica chobot in the game
-a full review hub for ME3
-now inflating sales numbers by 4 times the real number?

nevertheless, congrats to bioware. I won't be contributing to the next game's sales though :(

Not saying it did, merely trying to explain where the four million came from out of that report.

IGN is being stupid. Anita Frasier said ME3 sold 2x ME2.

ME2 sold 572.1K in Jan 2010.

ME3 sold slightly more than twice that at ~1200K (Calculated using Aaron Greenberg number)

IGN for some reason thinks the Frasier 2x comment is in reference the the shipments to the stores, but I doubt that what she meant.

EDIT: And then a GAF thread is made with a poor thread title, which doesn't help

Ideally people stayed away from the PS3 version because the framerate was crap...but that's probably not the reason. Anyways, the majority of gamers lucked out.

It's worth noting the 4 to 1 ratio comes from retail sales and the game came out on PSN as well, so it's probably 3.8 to 1. :p

My copy at least was bought on PSN.

PS3 users really don't care for ME lol.

It has more to do with the fact that the franchise wasn't built up (never got ME1) and then Bioware/EA was very stupid in how they released ME2 (high price). They very likely could have sold more copies of Mass Effect 3 had they launched ME2 PS3 at a discounted price to build the userbase.

Can't wait till this goes up on those fanboy websites like N4G. The comments section is like two monkeys flinging feces at each other.

I was one of those looking forward to the move to the ps3, but these days i can't get excited for mass effect as a series, the little i played of 2 still makes me wonder what the hype was about.
