Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

Square Enix doesn't have a single hit for christmas this year in Japan, and they're not going to skip an entire season without one. Versus XIII is certainly coming at that time.

isn't FFXIV v.2 (aka massive FFXIV relaunch) releasing in time for the holiday this year?

Doubt they would have FFXIV and VersusXIII release in the same quarter.

Eeeh, they might have something in the works for 3DS that could fit the window. Let's call it, FF V 3DS.

Final Fantasy XIV-2 BETA is planned for the end of the year, but the game will be on shelves for Q1 2013.

They have Bravely Default, but that's not exactly going to be an hit. There's no reason for Versus XIII to be delayed any further at this point. The E3 is behind the corner, so if they want to announce anything now it'll be the right time to do so in Los Angeles.

I don't think FFXIV 2.0 will do so hot.

Sega is the only Japanese gaming company I know of that is finally being smart, they've been *really* good lately & I'm proud of 'em for it. They've always been my 2nd favorite publisher / dev.

They made the right choice going Free to Play with PSO2 yet sadly Square will still fall behind. I can't expect their user base to do well competing against Guild Wars 2 here in the West, when FFXIV 2.0 launches either.

They showed a new trailer and announced the demo in late 2008. Pretty sure was the biggest promotional explosion since the initial announcement at E3 2006.

Exactly. I remember that was when they transitioned from those short CG snippets and vague details to actually showing the game in motion and revealing new details every few weeks.

I think that was also when SE put Versus in the back burner and left it there ever since. Prior to that we would always get a simultaneous XIII and Versus XIII update/trailers.

That's because both of them would come out with rehashed trailers, every six months or so. The next six months were spent debating 10 seconds of new footage.

I'm thinking Vs13 won't come out until late 2013.

again, might as just rebrand it as Final Fantasy XV at that point and have whatever is being cooked as FFXV push to FFXVI (i.e. like the FF 'Gaiden' project adapted to be FFIX and the original IX becoming FFX... fuck that's kind of confusing when I read over it :D).

At least that way they can carry on their tradition of 3 numbered FF's per generation cycle, right?

If you're talking about the late 2008 trailer, no. Hell no. It was all new, and I think it even showed the first actual game play including the battle system (from the demo.) It was initially shown in a closed theater of course, but it was definitely out in the wild long before the demo hit in April 2009.

Yup. And it was footage we didn't even get to see because they were shown in the closed MEGA theater. Some people who went to the show attempted to draw out the trailers for the rest of us. Good times.

Gametrailers has a poll going on right now, on Facebook, asking what game people want to see the most at E3. Versus XIII needs more love! ='(

Giving it more love won't make it come out sooner.

So: NO!

This is true. Just goes to show the people that voted though, how many of 'em jumped ship from Square (if they've even liked the franchise, at any point in time.)

I'll be soon following if I see nothing by Tokyo Game Show... at that point, Sega & Nintendo will be *FAR* more relevant to me. :P

Can you link to the poll, DJ? It won't have any effect on anything, sure, but it's always nice to vote for.

Someday when our grand-kids get to play this game, they will ask: Why don't the graphics look up to PS5 standards?
Then we'll shake our heads and remember when it was supposed to be released on the PS3. :(

Joking aside, I'm hoping it comes out early next year.

But... but... b-but Fabulous Nova Crystahawhassisiss!

I don't think they started any real work on it until late 2009 or early 2010, after FFXIII was released. Both games were supposed to be worked on simultaneously, after Square was finished building their "white engine." Unfortunately, the "white engine" was a mistake that put the development of both projects largely on hold until it was ready or something. This is what I've gathered from various interviews, etc.

We received a lengthy trailer, full of gameplay last year. It's been a few months since that anniversary, but I'm guessing we'll see it towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year in at least Japan.

What's going to happen if HL3 and Versus 13 (release date) actually show up at E3 this year?

Perhaps there is some merit to this 2012 end of the world nonsense.

HL3 would would automatically make E3. Put some FFXIII Versus info in there too and... commence mouth foaming.

Where do we actually draw the line here between long development cycle/quality?

I remember back in the day the backlash that Heart of darkness got because it had a very long development cycle.

Would you still be fond of your favorite game or franchise if you were hyped for more than 5 years?

Avatar bet? :D

pfffttt.....

I'm going to win this with ease. No doubt in my mind at all! =D

While a long Dev cycle sucks, I can say it that it doesn't seem to effect me nearly as much as it does alot of other people.

There are plenty of amazing games that come out each year that not having something like VS doesn't kill me and so long as the game is good, it taking a long time won't make me dislike it if it isn't the greatest thing ever made.

Even taking into account it's holding up other stuff, I still get plenty of amazing content from SE that even that line of thinking doesn't bother me to much.

I wouldn't be surprised if at E3/TGS this year Sony/SE announces Versus has now become it's own entity and they announce it as FFXV.
Would be funny if that'd happen.

expect another trailer behind closed doors.

What do you mean by it's own thing?

Just calling it XV? I guess it's possible but I really doubt this happens.

Removing it from the FNC? Really doubtful when they didn't even do what with Agito/Type.

May as well reveal Titan for the trifecta.

Well Blizzard has a bunch of other crap they have to worry about (D3 soon, next SC xpac, Pandas), Valve on the other hand is only really messing with Dota 2 currently, right? As for Versus 13 Nomura has been saying forever it's versus 13s "turn"... so it's more in the realm of possibility than Titan certainly is.
