EGM: Final Fantasy Versus XIII a No Show at E3

You see what you want.
...and you don't? I see a guy who wears all black, has a constantly dour expression on his face, seems wistfully lost in his deep dark thoughts in a dark room on a dark throne. I'm pretty sure if I took images of him up to people on the street, they'd think he looks like he has some bummer vibes. Now it's true, maybe the final game will reveal he suffered a car accident Kiriyama-in-Battle-Royale-style that impaired his ability to have any discernible emotion beyond complete apathy (which, btw, is depressing for everyone else around him), and then we'll see he's not sad but merely incapable of feeling warmth or joy. Well OK then.

EDIT: I see the game's creator is even defending against the notion Noctis is a "silent, gloomy little boy," to quote that interview excerpted above. If the creator has to answer allegations like that, clearly I'm not the only one getting this impression. And man, if you guys don't think he looks sad, I'd be terrified to see what twisted nightmare constitutes gloom for you.

Not even a trailer or anything? Man.

Well, Square Enix didn't actually say it wouldn't be there, the writer of this article just assumed so based on the E3 invite sent out yesterday. The invite included a list of confirmed titles, but in no way was it the complete list. So there's still potential for a surprise trailer or something. I think they'll hold out for TGS on this one though.

So only "emos" and "goths" can be depressed? Is Johnny Cash emo or goth for having written depressing songs and wearing black all the time? Get out of here with that shit.

Emo!

dude, what?

Yep, Noctis is most definitely the spitting image of Johnny Cash.

Oh wait, no.

Anyway, I wonder if they'll just port this wrist-slitter's game to a next-gen console and try to recapture their wind there. Hmm.

Thinking back, the announcement of FFXIII, Versus and that cell phone game were kind of the beginning of the end for FF, wasn't it? Not in a pure sales sense, but more in a "all of gamedom waits with bated breath" level of magic and hype. These multi-pronged single number installments (what was it called? Fabula Nova Crystalis or some shit?) makes for a better news headline but just fragments and dilutes each game's impact. Just make this one XV rather than making it another XIII title.

I can kind of understand the indefinite delay on this, considering everything Square did this generation has been a complete wreck, from fabula nova crystalis being completely botched to FFXIV being made for some reason.

JC was the Man in Black. Practically invented goddamn goth.

I'm only partially joking here, if there's one country musician I'd ever consider goth, it would be JC.

Just cancel the game and work on Kingdom Hearts III. The world of Final Fantasy XIII sucks anyway.

The world of XIII is far more inter sting then whatever the fuck KH is. I'm not even sure KH is an actual world, since the places seem so shittly made with hardly anything actually going on in them. And then the story....

XIII may be presented badly, but the actual ideas in them present cool ideas. The world of Coccon and how it works with Pulse is actually pretty cool. If Pulse was presented well we could have gotten a world that is so technologically advanced and fanciful, but highly controlled and a fake paradise. Either way the atmosphere on Coccon was actually done well, a very dead place, but pretty curious in how it kind of seems to be somewhat modern.

Either way that alone is better then whatever KH is.

But it doesn't matter since Versus isn't set in XIII's world.

Johnny Cash is quite gothic, actually.

If you're referring to gothic as in gothic literature, then I could see him as a sort of Byronic antihero. Anyway, since he always had a somewhat somber appearance and persona, and some occasionally somber lyrics, I'd probably consider him closer to a country version of Robert Smith than a country artist in the traditional sense.

I see a person who is bored. I don't know what he'll end up being like. That doesn't say much about his character. You've apparently got that all mapped out just because he's wearing black (just like all of his buddies).

But yes, in general, we see what we want.

Why exactly? 6 years of effort and money are a lot to throw away because some people are impatient.

6 years of wasted effort and wasted talent.

Either cut your losses and release what you have now or cancel it. They are not gonna make any money off of it anyway.

AAK am cry.

Should be no surprise for everyone else though.

Not completely ;)

I stand by that statement :P

If it isn't going to be shown at E3, whenever it's going to be shown, it will be revealed as a multiplatform title... and MS won't let something like that go unmarketed. And hence that's also why I assume development has been taking so long. The team is working to get the 360 version up to the same state of development as the PS3 version for the eventual simultaneous release.

My point was that regardless of whether it'll be @ E3 or not, I expect it's re-reveal to be at an MS related event. MS Press Con being the closest I expected it there, if not, it'll be at MS's TGS Press Con just like how Tekken 6 was revealed then.

As it's been said a million times now the game hasn't really been around 6 years. They had a trailer, and it was just that, a trailer. It's spent more time since the announcement as a concept rather than a project in production. It is far from 6 years of wasted effort.

Oh, so "emo" is just his look? Emo is simply a look? Okay, I thought you were going somewhere with your rant about gloominess, dark clothing and a depressed facial expression. Or the somber poetry. Hmm.
Yes, I was saying Noctis looks dark, somber, gloomy and depressed. Even the character's creator is being quoted in interviews trying to dispel this notion, which just goes to show I'm not the only one seeing him this way. I'm not sure where you're going with Johnny Cash, but then again I don't know why you care if I say he looks depressed.

That's poor management IMO. Programming heavily relies on short term memory. You can look at code you wrote 2 years later and not remember doing it.

What they've been doing all these years is essentially what they did with XII.

Experimenting and building custom tools for the game.

I think IIRC real development didn't begin until 2009.

Even if that is true then you have a product that has been teased for way too long. Does anyone actually think that when its released Versus will be a good product after the disappointments of XIII and XIII-2 and the mess that was XIV?

And if it takes 6 years just to get a concept down then you need to hire new staff.

Is the approach to making these games to come up with the characters, look and setting first, and then figure out a game to make later?

That sounds like the approach they took here, showing a trailer without a solid concept of an actual game.

I can't attach enough sarcasm tags to my feigned surprise. Truly the Duke Nukem Forever of the East.

Versus XIII = Duke Nukem Forever ( it's actually in development hell but it will see the light one day)
The Last Guardian = Half Life 2 Episode 3 (just a vaporware and don't actually exist)

Code... for what? The announcement trailer was entirely CG nonsense. There was no game there, that's my entire point. No actual "game" existed until recently.

13-2 was not a disappointment in the least, and 14 was an entirely different team at SE (that has since been replaced and now the game is turning into something fun and more modern/standard for MMOs).

It did not take 6 years for them to get a concept down, they were working on different things. Nomura has worked on a lot of games since Versus announcement (like 4 or 5, too lazy to look up the exact list atm), he just hasn't been able to work on Versus for a multitude of reasons. For some reason everyone seems to forget SE has made a ton of handheld games this gen, the quality of which has been very high as well.

Should they have not "announced" it so early? Probably. I'd agree with that, but I am not an insane person who for some reason has to shout on the internet when it comes to one games existence without looking at all the facts.

i remember when versus xiii was announced. bush was still president and america was grooving to the tunes of neil young's living with war.
