What Sport Generates The Best Looking/Most Exciting Highlights?

Football/soccer goals can be a real treat to watch.

and Anderson Silva should be a class of his own in terms of highlights.

In basketball: top play is a dunk 99% of the time
In baseball: top play is a home run 40% of the time, and a catch/throw to base 60%
In MMA: top play is a knockout 99% of the time
In football: there are about 15 different types of top plays; from kick returns, nasty tackles, crazy catches, jukes, etc

Good points.

Even though I picked baseball homeruns are overrated unless they come at a critical moment in the game. I would replace homeruns in your statement with great, diving outfield catches. You could also include throws to home from the outfield.

You make a great case for football though

I haven't seen a single game but after this gif I believe that it is "Ultimate"

Well, of course, all sports have the capacity for amazing highlights if you can appreciate the nuance/context of the sport and what's going on in particular moments, and I think baseball and soccer/football really benefit from this... but really, I think American Football/Basketball have that amazing combination of athleticism/flair that can appeal to any most any casual viewer.

You don't need to know much to appreciate

Basketball.

It's the only sport (except maybe soccer penalty kicks) where the game can come down to the last second, and each team actually has a very high chance of scoring a game winner or stopping it. This can be insanely exciting or stressful as hell if you're a fan of either team.

American Football. Basketball has cool alley oops and dunks but that gets old. Football has insane running backs doing matrix-like shit or just bowling balling their way through, great QBs throwing HUGE plays to WRs with triple coverage, defenses intercepting and running it back for the win.

Damnit I want football back.

Also while I can appreciate the great athleticism involved in it, MMA has got to be the lamest sport out - like WNBA level.

How is MMA lame? It's the rawest sport out there.

Soccer, football, ice hockey...

Basketball is the worst of the major sports, it's 90% dunks and shots that any kid in a gym could make that are only top plays because they are important given the context (end of game). Dunks are the single most overrated sporting highlight. The defender is at a total disadvantage based on the rules of the game, so how is dunking on someone in any way impressive? And of course breakaway dunks are even dumber. That's like being impressed by some football player (eg DeSean Jackson) acrobatically diving into the end zone when there is no opposing player within ten yards of him... who cares? Plus scoring in basketball happens with such frequency (~200 points between the two teams) that most individual goals are practically meaningless... when each shot is worth 2 points but 70% of games are not even within single digits, what is the point?

Yes anything A's related is also great.

HD tv made hockey exciting for a TV audience. Rightfully so. But I still go with American football.

MMA really isn't exciting for people when its on the ground unless you know whats going on.

I'd love to say boxing, but these days the highlights are the only things worth watching in the heavier divisions.

tbh, most sports have amazing highlight potential. If I settled on one, I'm sure something great would happen in another sport the next day that makes me change my mind.

Oh yeah basketball highlights are the best. Nothing like watching someone flop like a woman from getting slightly brushed up by someone or someone missing like 10 shots in a row. Basketball is practically unwatchable except for the last quarter.

Flops and missed shots aren't highlights
