Same link says people have been donating money to her from across the country, nice gesture.

I tried looking for a donation website, but there doesn't seem to be one. :/

She's probably not "supporting" him, but she's still got two younger siblings to take care of.

She's only got one younger sister, and I don't think any of them live together. The story's been spiced up, but its still infuriating.

Reporter: Can anything be done to revoke this?

Judge: Probably...

Reporter: Will you?

Judge: I haven't thought about it....It's gonna make me look soft.

What a dumb ass judge.

The man has a rep, can't be gettin' soft for some kid.

Oh god, I misread that, they 'offered support' for a fund, not sure if that means actual money has been donated.

EDIT: They're working on it

'Tran lives with the family of her part-time employer. They are working on setting up a fund in her name at a local bank.'

Oh my god, supporting yourself and 2 siblings whole going to high school, god damn :(. She will be very successful one day.

And what a shithead judge. Dumb bitch.

Also, where did her parents go, they are shitheads as well.

this fucking judge
Probably got a fucking quota.

Suck that people don't know about these situation till it makes news.
Sad to say, at least now she is going to receive much more help.

Judge sounds like a dick, but I imagine that the case wasn't properly investigated or something else to prompt a ruling like that.

The fuck!?

The parents need to be thrown in fucking jail!

Indeed. Sounds like Child Abandonment unless something else is going on here that we don't know about.

Here's Child and Criminal Abandonment Laws for Texas, btw:
Child Abandonment

Child abandonment is a form of child neglect, according to the Texas Family Code, Section 261.001(4). The definition of abandonment is leaving a child younger than the age of 18 in a situation where he would be exposed to a substantial risk of physical or mental harm, without arranging for necessary care for him and a demonstration of an intent not to return. The law applies to the parent, guardian, custodial parent or noncustodial parent, called managing and possessory conservators in Texas. Temporary caregivers can be accused of other forms of neglect, but not of abandonment. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is the state agency responsible for investigating cases of alleged child neglect, including abandonment.

Criminal Abandonment

The criminal law regarding abandoning or endangering a child is found in Texas Penal Code Section 22.041. Criminal child abandonment means to leave a child younger than the age of 15 in any place without providing reasonable and necessary care for the child, in circumstances under which no reasonable, similarly situated adult would leave a child of that age and ability; intentionally abandon the child in any place under circumstances that expose the child to an unreasonable risk of harm; or engage in conduct that places the child in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment. If the accused is found guilty, the offense of abandonment is a felony.
There are two exceptions to the criminal statute. First, it is a defense to prosecution that the act or omission enables the child to practice for or participate in an organized athletic event. Second, if the person voluntarily delivered the child to a DEIC under the Baby Moses law, the case will not be prosecuted.

Wait, why does a high school student need to be working to support a college student?

Glad I'm not the only one who caught this. Then again, he goes to A&M...
(Actually, that would imply he's either really smart or the family had lots of money).

no doubt he goes to "church" every week, calls himself a Christian and does not have the first fucking clue about what his religion is about.

a fuckwit of the highest order.

AND He is wearing a US flag tie, REALLY??????????????

Stuff like this happens to my extended family all the time. Asian parents leave the kid with some family friend or distant relative, and then just never shows up again. Usually the kid joins a gang, so good for her that she has a job and still goes to school.

The judge on the other hand is just stupid.

The judge is utter scum and sounds like a complete dumb-ass. However at least this will get the girl more publicity and hopefully will result in her getting some help which she clearly deserves.

The Judge said:
'If you let one [truant student] run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em? Let them go too?' asked Judge Moriarty.

Yes, our judicial system should be incapable of any nuance, and all laws should be applied with no consideration of context, situation, or circumstance.

If I let the woman who killed her violent, rampaging, knife wielding husband go, what do you do with the rest of the killers? Let them go too?

The most fucked up, ass-backwards thing I've read all month. How can something so simple be solved in such a stupid way?

We should fire the judge and replace him with a computer, since that is who he apparently aspires to be. The computer would be far cheaper too

Being young and poor should be a mental illness.

I'm sure the judge knows that he is inappropriately using his power but it doesn't seem that he cares.
He's allowed to put her in jail. He's likely using power the law stupidly gives him as a solution to a truancy problem.

I was searching around the webs for truancy laws and there are plenty that aren't pretty. I'm kind of surprised how often juvenile detention can and will be used. This one remains odd since it's jail and the article implies that she has good grades so she can't be missing so much that she's constantly absent.

What kind of fucking law is that?!

Ideally it's meant for delinquents who have no respect for the school. Having to appear a judge is not that uncommon, though I'm not sure how often that results in jail.

It seems to me like he took it out on her because she appeared in his court more than once.

I promised myself after my last ban I wouldn't post when I was so angry I wanted to start bringing up the offending party's sexual natures.

So my three paragraph "the judge can suck the fattest ____" analogy was deleted and I'm writing this instead.

The judge is a slackfaced fool who should be made to resign. His colleagues ought to feed him his stupid mustache and hand him a mop and bucket, then turn him loose so that he can fulfill his highest potential as a career janitor.

Does Texas not have any school councilor positions that work with the students and administrators to work out these kinds of problems, lend a sympathetic ear?

This is so incredibly dumb.

Also, why are judges involved with high school attendance?
It's illegal although schools often handle the process, police get involved when they catch kids. If the kid is habitual and belligerent, then the punishment gets more severe.

Jailtime & fines are often reserved for the parents though.

Just to be sure on this.... One sibling is in college and the other is being taken care of by relatives?

Even so, it doesn't negate the fact that this poor girl should not have been arrested and that she is working well beyond what she should be. Again, I hope she gets some help, the judge gets fired and the parents are found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

My district has truancy officers (not to be confused with actual police officers) who will go to the students' homes. I don't know the rate, but I know some of those kids do end up in court.

According to Texas state law, students who are absent from school without parental consent for three days in a four-week period or ten or more days in a six-month period are subject to prosecution.

So when you don't have parents, you apparently can't miss school for anything. Wonderful system they have going.

Feel bad for her but not like this will actually hurt her chances for admission to med school. Might even help after the publicity. The success story is still there for the taking.

Now, it's up to Ms Tran to support her siblings, who include an older brother at Texas A&M University and a younger sister who lives with relatives.

So her older brother is in college and her sister lives elsewhere? Is older brother not working?

Judge is an utter d-bag and I can't help but think that they're leaning on her for not having the parents around or having any resources.

That said, don't kid yourself GAF. The VAST majority of truancy issues are not involving stories such as the one presented here. Much like anything else, gotta take circumstances into consideration.

Who'da thunk it? Zero tolerance policies suck.

She would need to become emancipated because she's under 18. Even then, I'd imagine there'd be rules against excusing yourself. You have to be present for so many hours to get credit for your studies.

Bless her heart for working so hard and doing her best to stay in school. I think it's rare to be able to do both like that. I understand he is doing his job but still.
