Time to get a 3DS?

Personally I'll wait until there's a revision. I have Game Boy, Game Boy Advance and DS, but for some reason I haven't bought 3DS yet. I've never been that much of a handheld guy though, I mainly play them at home, so I'll just wait for some great games first. Not saying there isn't good or great games even already, but I'm in no hurry buying this thing just yet. I think this year's E3 will be the turning point though.

I'm waiting for a revision....

but when KH, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, and such come out along with me wanting to pick up OOT, Abyss 3DS, and Revelations, not sure how long I can hold out.

I knew I would eventually want a 3DS, but I'm not sure if I should wait or not. I purposely avoided getting a launch 3DS due to launch issues that often plague new systems - one of which I heard about the 3DS was the scratching issues it had. Does the 3DS still have those issues? With E3 around the corner, should I wait for any new announcements regarding new iterations or potential price cuts?

The 3DS will start being profitable for Nintendo this fall. Until that happens it is highly unlikely they'll cut the price again or even come out with a new model. The original DS to DS Lite situation was different from what is taking place now with the 3DS. The form factor is what they want and wasn't rushed. The 3DS is selling more then the DS did. Only a handful of games are using the circle pad pro and even then most of those games play just fine without it. There is no huge demand for it to be integrated with the 3DS. So people really should not expect a new redesign anytime soon and if they do come out with one it will likely be a larger unit that cost more then the system dos now.

However E3 is just over a week away. No reason not to wait until then and then make your purchase though. Just don't expect anything on this front. If anything expect more color and/or bundles.

I'd also highly recommend checking Craigslist for good deals. I got a red 3DS in perfect shape with the Nyko Powergrip battery, Kid Icarus, and Mario Kart for $180 that way.

I'm not touching a 3DS until a redesign.

I got burned when I bought a DSlite and then they announced a new version just a couple of weeks after. I will not get burned again.

I'd say the fact that units shipped to Gamestop are already spoken for well in advance of shipment is proof of demand.

As for the OP, you might as well wait another week if you already held off this long. I don't expect a revised system announcement though, as I see that as something Nintendo would announce at one of their own shows, so it has the spotlight to itself.

Oh, and I'd wait for a deal. Best Buy recently offered free Pilotwings and Steel Diver w/purchase, so keep an eye out.

One week before E3, you would be daft not to wait.

If a redesign or price cut doesn't happen though, you should definitely get one next week. The 3DS already has a good library of software and the known lineup for the rest of the year looks good too, plus whatever they announce at E3.

I don't think E3 will change course for 3DS price or hardware wise, but I would wait after it.

I will hold until a revision myself. I don't expect it until 2013 but I can wait.

Yes, it's time. If you wait you'll just waste time thinking about it instead of playing Mario Kart. Life's too short.

I'm another waiting on the redesign. With Nintendo you know it's coming, just a matter of when. I'm in no rush to play anything on it anyway.

Well, whenever I do decide to buy a 3DS within the foreseeable future, what would be a good screen protector to buy to prevent the potential scratching issues?

Yeah, it couldn't hurt to wait. I don't really expect a revision though. There could be so many other things however, new colors, new decals, new bundle.

I can't use WPA encryption on it so no it fucking isn't.

I'd trade my GBA slot for that in a second.

Alright, good point! Forgot about that little... situation ;P

ALTHOUGH, to be fair: you can't use WPA encryption with most DS games anyway. Only a handful that are DSi enhanced, like Pokemon Black/White. In fact, part of the reason I day 1'd the 3DS was so I could play Pokemon Black online.

If you don't own a 3DS then that means that you can't play Pushmo. Therefore, everybody should own a 3DS.

the man knows

Just wait till after E3, I doubt a redesign will be announced there but it's not like a week is a long time to wait. Better be safe than sorry.

I would get it now. No way there will be a price cut.

They are already losing money supposedly on it.

If they do a re-design or lite model, Nintendo will make sure it's cheaper to manufacture. Probably meaning everything about it will feel cheaper.

I hated the DS Lite / DSi. It / They felt cheap and like crap to me. I hated the buttons, the directional pad, everything about it. It felt like some knockoff. I liked my original DS better by far.

The current 3DS, to me, feels great. I love everything about it. A much improved DS.

So, even if there is a re-design or lite version announced I would still greatly prefer the original.

Get one now or wait for price drop, which will not happen. Nintendo rarely lowers prices. Only in extreme circumstances. Such as, new system coming to clear out old inventory. Or the case of the 3DS.

I'll ask again just in case it was overlooked but if I go on and get the original 3DS, what would be a good screen protector to get that would be essentially invisible, easy to put on, and protect the 3DS from scratches that the original is known for?

Wait until there THE must have game for you hits. Then pick one up. I expect no price cut/redesign, but I do expect a ton of bundles/colors. So just wait till the game you really want hits, and then chose from the bundles/colors available at that time.

The only exception to this rule is if you want the blue color that they are phasing out in NA. Get that before it's gone.

There's a non-zero chance of a redesign being announced at E3.

I think they generally announce those in japan first, but still.

So yeah, you've waited this long, wait two weeks more.

Wait, you still don't have a 3DS ?

The only GBA game I've bought is Pokemon emerald...

And I only bought it so I could cheat and move items to Pokemon Diamond.

well you still had the ability to play the library of two great handhelds with that version. I'm expecting backwards compatibility to go away in all gaming hardware so they can sell that old stuff digitally again.

If you don't own a 3DS then that means that you can't play Pushmo. Therefore, everybody should own a 3DS.

I love the company that made Pushmo, but this game has zero legs for me. Played about 120 puzzles and was done. Just not interesting enough to hold my attention like a good puzzle game does.

They are not going to announce a 3DS revision. They want to move attention to Wii U for the Post-E3 year, me thinks.

i returned my zelda 3ds bundle because i was afraid it was going to get scratched, the top screen was wobbly, and i saw a lot of ghosting on Zelda with 3D on. I'm hoping a revision will be the definite model much like the DS Lite was.

The scratching issue has not been fixed. I know of a Zelda, Flame Red, and even a purple 3DS that still has the issue. It's pretty hilarious that Nintendo gets such a pass on what's obviously a hardware defect.

I'm with the others who are waiting to see if they'll release a lite version. Had to suffer with the original DS for the longest time while everyone had pretty DS lites :[

I really doubt that a revision will be coming soon so I'd say buy it. That said I'm still hoping they announce one soon. I like the 3ds, but it definitely has some issues that could be fixed.
