WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

Yeah you guys are nuts. It's a prototype and aside from the overall shape, it's silly to draw any conclusions on anything else.

Obv it's too early to pass judgement about the final device, I'm just saying, that back looks ugly to me. Hopefully the final design is different.

And I dunno about the rest of GAF but I loved the iPhone 4 design even from the prototype pics.

Everyone hated the way the 4 looked too, "No way would apple ever..." I bet it will look better as a completed product when they show it off, so I am going to withhold judgement until then.

Other than the seams on the antenna thing, this is completely off base.

Yeah! It's such a pain in the ass being able to borrow a charging cable or dock my phone wherever I am. Let's fix that by changing the connector!

Well, if they change it to the mini USB most android devices use, you'll have even more opportunities to borrow a charger!

And trust me, wherever there is an android phone, a charger isn't far away.

Its going to be hard to top the 4. That was one of the best phone ever.

Apple has lived and died by selling its customers adapters.

You're crazy if you don't think Apple will have a "new dock connector to 30-pin connector" adapter available on the phone's release.

Wow.

Okay...

Not a fan of that look, not very clean, but thankfully, I put decals on the back of my iPhone, so as long as it is flat, so I'm totally cool with this, I'll just put one of these on:

Fuck me all kinds of sideways. Yuck. Also, what's with the two camera lenses? That second hole is way too big to be a flash.

You're probably right. I know my GN can do TV out through it while charging, is there anything specific the i-products can do via their proprietary port that can't be done on modern android devices through USB?
VGA, line in/line out, HDMI, Firewire, etc.

Where does it say it's a prototype?

Common sense? Or do you actually think they're already manufacturing a product in May-June that's set for release in November?

I hate apple's connector, but I hate micro USB. It sucks and feels like every single device is manufactured to a slightly different tolerance.

We knew it was going to happen sooner or later, the 30-pin connector is old as shit and outdated in size. Every new iDevice in 2013 will adopt the new connector.

It's true, but after having a billion 30-pin cables at my disposal for all my charging needs...I'm going to have to restart my stockpile :(

So just as I thought, it isn't possible to fit it in the same iPhone 4 frame. They had to make it longer as well, which let them slim it down a bit in thickness (but not as much as it would've been if wider).

Iphone is coming in october at the latest. Apple started manufacturing iPads in january for a March launch.

And uh whats that about vga, hdmi firewire?!

Pin connector had to change sooner or later. You would've either got upset now or you would've got upset later. It was quite inevitable.

First, I think it's coming in September. This thing is expected to do gangbusters if you go by previous rates of iPhone growth, which I think is more than double. They sold 37 million iPhone 4S at launch, when many people thought it was just a minor upgrade. They need to churn out at least double, with a new design (more difficult ramp up time) with Foxconn recently committing to cutting overtime by more than half.

If you need double the output, but have half the man hours, you're going to start early. Opening new factories and hiring more gets you halfway there, but that is costlier, and there is a labor shortage in China manufacturing now.

They did the intelligent thing by switching up the aspect ratio. More screen real estate is a good thing. But there's still a lot of wasted physical phone space. I'd have bitten if the screen was bigger than 4", but I suppose it was always a bit too much to ask.

Looks pretty good though. Aluminium on the white looks a bit wack though.

Again, looks about exactly the size of my current Droid X, which is taller and narrower. Fits very well in your hands and is easy to reach across the entire screen with one hand.

I bet the iPhone 5 is similar in dimensions.

Figures Apple would change the dock connector the some year I shell out money on that elevation dock kickstarter. Great timing on my part to invest in a fancy new dock this year, of all times

just one more reason for me to wait out this year's model. at least I can get one year's worth of use out of the elevation dock and the 4S before it becomes an expensive bookend

Those two "leaks" are different. Not just the font on the back, but the aspect ratio.

Could just be the angle. The width is the same on both, I think. It's just the one on the right might be longer (like the iLounge mockups). But again, probably just the angle/doctored image etc.
