Acting was good all round, some characters are a bit shallow (no character development) while others are really good (Fassbender and Noomi). The plot progression stalls, but it's enjoyable, I guess it depends on your expectations.
If you go into the movie screening with your expectations in place, you will have a great time.

Maxim rated her higher than Charlize, maybe that was the impetus. It was really funny when Stephen brought it up.

Most reviews so far haven't been doing the movie any favours by constantly comparing it to Alien. Perhaps it's inevitable given the subject matter, but it would be nice to see a review take the movie on its own merits. There's no way this movie can win if its put under the shadow of Alien time and again, no matter how good it is.
It's still a prequel through and through.

Goddamit I hyped myself into oblivion. I have never been so excited for a movie in my life, never wanted a movie to succeed more. Even if the movie is enjoyable, I will be heartbroken. I wanted this to be a classic. With amazing, shocking scenes and intense, bleak atmosphere, with an increble story that will have you thinking and talking about it for days after. Looks like I won't get that, why did I do this to myself. Fuck me... Maybe there is still hope.
Yeah, I'm definitely adjusting my expectations accordingly. Oh well.

Those are some crazy high expectations, but you just gotta judge for yourself. A lot of classics have had mixed reception when they were first released. Some of my very favorite movies, such as The Fountain, I would never have seen if I trusted early reviews and opinions.
This too. Ridley's been pretty clear about not wanting to do "just another Alien", but something different, so if you're expecting Alien you'll obviously be disappointed. And also I think people might be remembering Alien as more than it actually was. It didn't really have an amazingly deep story or massive amounts of characters development. And now Prometheus is expected to have those things, while at the same having the shocks, scares and gore of Alien, and as thick an athmosphere.symphonask said:

Nobody's saying it did. But it's still a top 3 Ridley Scott movie. And better than anything he's done in years.
Prometheus may very well be good or it may be disappointing, but either way he brought it on himself for tying this to the Alien universe. Sure sure he can say "but it's not a prequel". And yet he threw in that Alien craft, and Weyland-Yutani corp.
At this rate he should just scrap the Blade Runner sequel idea entirely and just work on a brand new cyberpunk film. I don't think he can live up to his previous legacy and I'd rather see him do something new than be tied down to his past.

haha, they tried so hard to segregate it from Alien and now that's all the critics can compare it to. If Scott had made what is essentially a remake or carbon copy of Alien by using the same atmospheric methods of long drawn out shots and all that shit people would be complaining that he was just hacking himself and didn't try anything new.

Sure, it can have ties and stuff, but that doesn't mean it has to be the exact same type of film stylistically/atmospherically. There are numerous ways to pull off sci-fi horror without doing it the exact same way that the original Alien did. And while the footage thus far has shown things reminiscent of Alien, I wouldn't say that it has ever looked to have the same style that made Alien great. You can have some of the same elements but with a different execution and that's always what Prometheus has looked like to me.

Yeah you're right. I haven't read reviews because I want to see this fresh without much spoilers, but I'm assuming they're not criticizing this film because "it's not like Alien"
They've probably got problems with the plot itself. And honestly at this point in Ridley Scott's career I'm trusting the slightly negative response rather than my hype at this point. If I end up being pleasantly surprised in theaters at how good the film was....then that will be great.
But I'm not banking on it anymore. Despite the amazing cast and marketing for this movie.
edit: okay I just sound like a massive bummer right now haha. I'm out until I see the film opening weekend.

Haven't there been a lot of good impressions though as well? I dunno I was just never a fan of seeing some negative reviews and letting them deflate my excitement for a movie. Just seems counter-productive and not much fun. All movies get negative reviews and clearly this movie isn't for everybody anyway. IMO there's nothing worse than being excited about something and then not being excited anymore because some other people out there who you may or may not agree with or share the same ideas about what makes something good wasn't crazy about it.
It's good to be cautiously optimistic, but I'm not exactly losing sleep because some movie critics didn't like a sci-fi horror movie.

This this this. I've found that sci-fi and action movies are 2 of the genres where I really need to just see the movies for myself instead of taking reviews into consideration. Hype for Prometheus is unchanged.

I'm not worrying that much personally. Critics and audiences seem to have always disliked this stuff at the premieres and found them later in the 'cult phase'. Just look at John Carpenter's The Thing or even Blade Runner? They were panned hard.

At the very least this movie will still be much better then Alien 3, Alien: Ressurection, Alien vs Predator and Alien vs Predator: Requiem.

Only uniform impression I see is 4/5, most things are good, 3rd act is a little messy / trying to do a lot. I like my movies a little overstuffed though, so I'm not sure if that will affect me much.

No I'm pretty sure it's Lindelof's fault that this has been getting bad reception. Some of our GAF film scholars have already pointed this out. It has nothing to do with different people having different tastes and expectations. If only Scott had kept to Jon Spaihts' script we wouldn't be seeing such sour reactions.

He's already expressed that he went into this not trying to clear up any of the great mysteries surrounding Alien and only provide clarity on a few, that Alien is pretty much a perfect movie and he's reluctant to do anything to diminish it in anyway.

Obviously we'll have to see the film and judge for ourselves, but that sounds like the perfect mindset to approach this film.
BTW, Lindelof is known for clearing up mysteries? I thought it was the opposite.
