New news, new thread.

It's not every day that the Washington Redskins call up a man convicted of rape and ask him if he'd agree to a one-day workout, but it happened Tuesday.
Oh, and the Kansas City Chiefs called Tuesday, too. And the Miami Dolphins. And they were three days behind the Seattle Seahawks, who will work him out on June 7.

Why are all these NFL teams eager to check out a convicted sex offender, a man who served five years in prison and wore a GPS ankle bracelet for another five?

Because Brian Banks didn't do it.

A judge in Long Beach, Calif., threw out his kidnapping and rape conviction last week after looking at a videotape of his accuser admitting she lied. After 10 years, he was suddenly a free and innocent man.

"My mouth hurts from smiling so much," Banks told me Tuesday night. "Unbelievable."

Banks was 16 in 2002, the bluest of blue chips out of Long Beach Poly High School, an NFL feeder if there ever was one. He'd already been offered a full-ride scholarship at USC by then-coach Pete Carroll.

But on a summer day that year, he and a girl named Wanetta Gibson decided to go make out in a stairwell at school. When they came out, she accused him of rape.

.....

"I'll make 'em happy," says Banks, who's been training non-stop since October. "After all I've been through these last 10 years, I can still do some things that will impress you."

Like ... dead-lift 545 pounds, box jump 55 inches flat-footed, broad jump 10-plus feet and run a 4.6 40, all at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds. NFL trainer Gavin Macmillan, who has volunteered to train Banks for free, says he has a shot. "You see him run and you can see why USC wanted him."

And if the NFL doesn't pan out? Banks already has all kinds of job offers. One of them is to "work in the front office and explore other sports opportunities" for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Why doesn't he get a scholarship and a degree

Actually at this point he'd be better off trying to get in the NFL first, then after he's done go back to school.

Going to college at this point would more than likely take him all the way past usability in the NFL. He'd be 30 when he finished going through a college program.

This is such great news.

But I feel bad that at the end of the day someone is going to post something really terrible to balance it out.

What's the saying? When life gives you lemons make lemonade?

Even if the NFL doesn't pan out it makes me hopeful that the dude can end up successful in his endeavors even after what he's been through.

Really happy to hear this. Doesn't surprise me that the Seahawks are looking at him (Pete Carroll was trying to recruit him to USC I think, seems like Pete cultivates relationships with his players, like Irvin), could use some depth at Linebacker.

great news for him. honestly surprising, however. despite the fact that he apparently retained much of his athleticism, isn't he old for the nfl? i mean i'm sure they have lots of younger candidates who can match his stats.

to be clear, i'm glad he's getting the shot that was cruelly taken away from him.

Good for him.

Hope everyone involved in his conviction have their lives and everything they care about fall apart/die horribly.

You can't teach size and speed, he's a physical specimen and it's a feel good story. It doesn't really cost these teams anything to try him out.

Pretty awesome that in the likely event that he doesn't catch on with an NFL team that he has a front office job offer from the Diamonbacks.

Well he's only 26, hasn't been in the NFL for a few years like most 26 year olds would have and hasn't taken the shots/wear and tear that current 26 yo players have, so NFL GMs could reasonably consider him really only 22-24 when comparing him to other guys. He's also obviously seen the very worst that life can offer him so he presumably has a tremendous work ethic and very strong desire to do everything he can to actually make an NFL roster.

And as, Seguin said, he has physical ability that you can't teach, and bringing him in for a tryout costs teams nothing and even if he can't make it then at least teams gave him a shot and generate themselves some nice PR.

ah ok, i must have skipped over the part of the article that said he was only 16 when convicted. i just assumed he was in his 30's for some reason.

That's terrific! He can use those NFL connects to... "take care of" that woman who wronged him if you know what I mean.

Give her what's coming to her if you catch my drift.

Insert that cake into her rectum if you're riding the boat with me.

Make sure she gets her just desserts if you're on the same page.

I hope he makes it, even if it's a third-stringer position. Dude deserves something good after what he went through.

So being falsely accused of rape might be a good thing in his case, he is famous, has a lot of opportunities with the NFL, and even the MLB with the diamondbacks.

Uhhh, I think he'd rather have just gone to USC on a scholarship instead of going to prison for 5 years and being labeled as a sex offender.

As a Seattleite, and a Seahawks fan, I'd love to see this happen. It's really nice that Carroll is standing by his former recruit.

I wouldn't exactly call 10 years in a federal prison a "good thing" even with all of the things happening now, but I catch what you're saying.

But he is lucky that he's still young in a way and in his athletic prime, so I think he has a lot of good years left if he continues to work hard at it.

Wish him the best, and I wish his accuser the fucking worst.

Sadly, he doesn't have a chance. He might have the body, but he won't have the reflexes, instinct, strategy etc gained from years of playing the sport. Brock Lesner couldn't make it on physique alone so this guy can't.
