I think Starship Troopers is the best movie ever made.
Well... good for you. Someone asked me "Errr... so what do you like?", and assumed in his tone that there wasn't any possible answer, that I was a "hater" or something.

I answered.

If you think ST is the best movie ever made, then you'll probably like a lot of movies I'll hate. But I won't ask you "Errrrr, well what do you like????" if you don't like the movies I love.

That said, it could be argued that Paul Verhoeven has directed more good movies than Ridley Scott. (I guess that would be trolling).

Starship Troopers is also on that list I think. Still need to see it...

It is, and Robocop too!

Unfortunately, Thelma and Louise is also on there. BLAH! Blade Runner (I guess) and Alien deserve to be there.

Blade Runner being up so high came as a real shock to me though. It hasn't even moved around that much over the years I think.

And I've seen Robocop yeah which was a pleasant surprise. I used to watch the show when I was kid and later on recounting back thought it was terrible and assumed the movie would be too. I was wrong.

@firstshowing:

WHAT? I did not know this.

I don't think those were in 3D. Though I can't quite remember.

Edit: Salvor.Hardin, I don't think so. They actually show some parts of it in Prometheus.

Is that a spoiler? I don't think so. Well, other than the entire Peter O'Toole chestburster sequence.

you mean that peter o'toole bursts out of someone's chest?

I think it's in the actual movie. Kind of crazy, I wonder how it fits in.

Fake spoiler:
The space jockeys get word that Fox is planning to remake Lawrence of Arabia, starring Robert Pattinson, and that's why they design the xenomorphs to kill everyone.

Is this available in the US yet?

You forgot to mention
the soundtrack by Justin Bieber and Nickleback

Weyland loved him some TE Lawerence if you remember his mention in the TED Talk viral. Fassbender even said in GQ he modeled some of David after Lawerence in the film. H may be watching it during the two year trip to LV-223.

Just came back. (non spoiler impressions)

Huge fan of the first two movies of course, was incredibly stoked to see it, but at the same time I didn't set the bar too high. I didn't expect an Alien prequel, what I wanted was a good movie in the same universe. Which is, as I see it, the right mindset for this movie, as a fan of the series.

And eh...

Holy shit. It's AMAZING.

If you're a fan of the universe created in the first movie, you will fall in love with Prometheus. The movie gives insight and explores so much, it's a lot to take in with one viewing. Friend I went to see it with is a huge Alien fan as well, and we couldn't stop talking about it afterwards. Food for thought and discussion, that's for sure. This movie will be stuck in my head for days. I want to see it again in the theatre and of course the blu-ray is a day one purchase. There's... a lot to talk about in this film.

There are gripes of course. Most characters outside of the principle cast are really forgettable/flat and their dialogue is pretty crappy. Thank god the main cast is good enough, but memorable minor characters would've added extra spice to the film.

My final concern after seeing it is (no real spoilers here, read if you'd like a bit of a tease)
this film explores so much, it creates more questions about this universe than ever before. Answers? Not so much. So, if you were expecting 'closure', it may be a disappointing film for you.
It's very impressive though how this film has succesfully created its own space inside the Alien mythos. This cán become a seperate series of films, and man, I hope it will be.

I really feel like you have to be a fan of Alien to see this though. It feels like a movie created specifically for us fans, and well... it's kind of awesome that way.

Hype x10

This is me trusting GAF over critics again. Except this time it's with a movie.

LET'S DO THIS

Just came back from a projection. I'm really mixed on what I saw. Before I say anything else, I think I better warn you people that I'm not a big Alien fan, I kinda like the previous movies but I saw them all (or did I?) last at least 5-10 years ago. So I went there with a rather fresh mind, and didn't watch any promotional stuff.

Visually, there's no debating the movie was really impressive. Nice scenary, awesome visual design, but the ambiance wasn't quite as good as I would have liked it to be. Pretty good score too.

Story spoilers ahead:
I feel like the movie didn't really knew if it wanted be a prequel or its how thing, and that it shows in a pretty terrible fashion. First part of the movie was really interesting, I loved the whole "Where do we come from" cheesy thing, thought it was really well done. But as soon as they wandered into the caves and recovered those things it started being terribly predictable and by-the-numbers.

All in one, I felt disappointed when I came out of the theater. I expected something... better. As simple as that.

I'm a big 3D buff and know how to spot good 3D and the 3D is insanely good in Prometheus, adds a lot to it, super immersive, great depth, impressive use, holograms especially look incredible.

About Jubern's opinion, I see his complaint often in those who are mixed or don't like the movie, Ridley said that it's very loosely a prequel as much as it is its own thing, it's kind of a universe inside the Alien universe.

But I do think that huge Alien fans will appreciate it more as there are a lot of elements, visible or hidden, fascinating. Plus there is much more than meets the eye, especially after reading Fassbender's ItW on Collider when he tells about his character David and his behaviour in the movie.

Will pay extra attention in my second viewing.

saw this tonight

it was good, the photography is magnificent, you'll see wonderful shots...

& Fassbender is a great actor.

the story
is kind of a mess to be honest.

there are several weird moments that don't really make sense, at least to me
(is the Android dropping the thing in the guy's glass just because he pisses him off? Does he have any idea what will result of this, seems kind of random...)

The fact that there are all pretty "calm" even after witnessing a shitload of disturbing things and having at least 5 guys dead is weird as well.
(when they go back to the ship to wake up the big guy)

Finally, are the "worms", the ones that kill the first biologist in the cave, coming from the jars?
I guess they are the weapons but the big guys didn't predict they would turn into face huggers & aliens after that

It's not a mess, having read Fassbender's interview on Collider, the
ambiguity
of his character is totally meant to be.

For the rest, it's part of the questions that will be probably be answered in the sequel. As Ridley said it in the interview on Collider (I swear I'm not working there :D ), he has a plan for the sequel and knows where it is going.

Surprised to see so many complaining because every single question is not being answered and they mistake that for a "mess of a script".

So, what do we think?

Sad to say it felt a bit rushed and messy. The first Alien takes its time, this one does not. Story doesn't feel like it makes a whole lot of sense either.

And while it certainly looks impressive, it's not a 100% cohesive work of art like the first one.

Well, that's cause it feels like one.

Ridley is such a different filmmaker now :(

so, are we supposed to know why the Android is dropping this in the guy's glass, did I miss something? Or did he just do it without knowing which consequences this might have because the guy treated him like shit? Also he seemed very aware when he found the "baby" in the girl's, asking about her last intimate relation with the guy...etc

and yes, i'm terrible with names

What I'm gathering from the reviews so far seems to be that if you're an Alien fan, you will love it. If you aren't, then you'll sort of just like it. I can see this doing pretty poorly at the box office. :(

Too bad because it did a great start at the BO here in France, the presales overseas are very strong, above MIB, and it already did 600.000 $ worth of presales in the BFI IMAX of London (yes, 600.000 $ in ONE theater). This will be big.

And Ridley wants to the sequel, all is well in the universe!

@Sleeper, as Fassbender says, it's really meant to be ambiguous, as you dont really know
as he says it in his interview, it could be a vengeful act, or it could just be for information's sake as David is like a child and learns constantly

Just saw it: visually gorgeous, and overall a good movie. Some characters are a bit flat and stereotypical, some of the actions of the characters are downright stupid (and I mean: even in their situation any normal person would say "wtf am I doing?"), some plot lines aren't really interesting, ... But the main story and main actors are all fine.

But I am watching this without having seen Alien(s), and this movie left me puzzled by a lot of stuff. I know that the creature lying in a chair that's seen in the Prometheus trailer is also in one of the older movies. So perhaps watching those would answer a few pressing questions...SPOILER(!)
Goddammit what are the intentions of those creator people!!! Why make humans to then destroy us!!!???
Something tells me this isn't answered in the Alien(s) films either. ;)
