How does the rest of Canada feel about Quebec?

I find it really interesting that a large part of a country has a totally different native language. Are there any feelings from English speaking Canada to Quebec?

Well, let's ask them. I'm sure a random sampling of GAF poster's opinions will provide a suitably balanced view.

I'm from Nova Scotia and I love Quebec.. whether or not they feel the same about me is another issue entirely.

As annoying as the topic can be at times. Recent annoyances include: MOAR FRENCH at Olympics and the $2 billion HST deal. Okay, relatively speaking, recent. That being said, I do respect that they have a very distinct culture comparatively speaking, and seem to support their talent moreso than other parts of the country. Hm. I guess I am on the fence. Merde.

Ontarian here. Quebec is a fun place to visit, but politically they are kind of assholes.

Also, you have to give them credit for inventing poutine.

And what about the 4G$ for Ontario?

Only pic I could find...

It just seems weird to me. I've been to Quebec and Ontario. Ontario felt pretty much like the USA to me, Quebec didn't it'd be like the language of Texas was 90% Spanish since it joined the country.

Considering they don't want to be a part of this country they have way too much sway politically.

I also think a lot of people in the Prairies associate the NEP with Quebec. Basically money that should have stayed in the Prairies was used to support Quebec.

The rest of Canada honestly sees them as spoiled, but then they forget that Quebec makes up a quarter of the population and a fifth of the GDP in the country.

But then, the rest of Canada has horrible backwards political views.

This is basically what the rest of Canada thinks about Quebec.
Yep

This hasn't been true for a couple of years now. But with the last federal election and the students' protest, I wouldn't be surprised if the separatist movement gained a lot of popularity.

I'm from BC. Fuck Quebec. Wish the referendum went the other way.

Toronto here, Quebec is pretty cool. All the hate is from people who have never been. It's a really nice place. Excellent poutine too.

I guess feelings towards each other (Quebec vs other provinces and territories) are still very..strong? The overall climate seems much more temperate than it was, say, 30 years ago.

People just don't care anymore. Quebec is a de facto country. The few people in QC that still care about Canada will be gone or dead in the next couple of years anyways.

No. If we're making generalisms, ROC sees the separatist movement this way, not Quebecois in general.

I feel like the hate from the other provinces toward Québec is way stronger than the other way. I don't know anyone who actually hate (or, when I'm thinking about it, don't like) the rest of Canada. Most people are just upset that we ended up with Harper because of them. :P

I have no qualms with Quebec - it is a beautiful part of the country that is just teeming with history and culture.

The problem I have really has more to do with the human condition I suppose, and this issue isn't solely isolated to Quebec.

As people age they tend to become increasingly insular, and subsequently afraid, particularly of change. The divisive politics of Quebec are such that most choose to prey on these tendencies with fear-mongering - by bombarding the people with the constant message that the things that are important to the identity of francophones - the culture, language and history - are under threat by 'English Canada', because, for some reason, we would want to eliminate it.

But I suppose that is politics in a nutshell - fear really is control...

It really is a shame, for Quebec is such a beautiful province, with wonderful people.

I don't have any issue with Quebec, nor its people. I do have a problem with corrupt public officials, but they exist everywhere. I just wish people were smarter than to allow themselves to fall into the fear trap.

Torontonian here. I'm okay with Quebec. Montreal is a nice city and poutine is great.

I may be in the minority here, though.

Quebec = seems to have a ridiculous sense of entitlement. Spoiled.

This is the opinion that many people I know share. I have the same opinion, but I'm not a jackass about it.

To flip it around, people outside of Toronto apparently hate Toronto. :lol

Well, there's a fair bit of bigotry and hatred on both sides. The Albertans are especially bad towards Quebec, but Quebec politics-wise seems pretty spoiled and focuses on what it can squeeze the rest of the country for.

These threads never end well.

Here is a nice reading list for anyone interested in why Québec is butthurt:

What I find the most repulsive is how "History of Canada" just absorbs New France. Over 200 years of history, followed by invasion and attempted assimilation, to peaceful co-existence?

If we consider everything that has happened, it is a wonder why we are still a part of a country that doesn't care for us.

To be clear, I have nothing against Canadians. But you have to at least understand from where we are coming from here.

I also find it repulsive how bigotry can be openly accepted on both sides. If we all had a little bit more understanding, maybe things wouldn't be so sour...

Quebec is awesome. (I'm from BC)

Part of the political reality of Canada is that the route to power is to play one region against one another, and so as a result you often see politicians and the media try to move public opinion in one province against another province. I feel like the media in BC often develops an anti-Quebec tilt.

I personally have no qualms with Quebec, They are an amazing addition to Canada

Hey, dont downplay our glorious dictator Steven Harper!
