I'm going to take a wild guess that word of mouth won't be too hot.

It won't be, but it won't be poor, either. Movie is very divisive. So I suspect you will see typical drops for the movie. Not tiny ones that movies with great WOM have, but not huge ones that movies with toxic WOM have.

I dunno. I was disappointed, but still think it's good to have a scifi movie like it in cinemas. I'm seeing it again in a couple days. I enjoyed it as a Scifi film well enough, just not as an Alien film - which it absolutely IS, despite every dickhead who doesn't want to admit it for fear of it being held to that standard.

I just remembered that a few days ago someone in this thread said Prometheus was better than Alien and Aliens. That made me chuckle before I had even seen Prometheus. But now that I've seen it? The chuckle has grown into uncontrollable laughter.

I don't know, it seems like the people most disappointed are Alien-ages and film-critic-GAF.

I went to this movie as a casual Alien fan, a Sci-fi fan, and as someone looking for a decent blockbuster. And I walked away as happy as a clam. I think word-of-mouth is not going to be represented well by this thread.

I liked it more than Aliens. Already explain why I do and can't be bothered to get into roundabout arguments because neither you or I are likely to change our opinion any time soon, but yeah.

I agree that neither of us will change opinions, but I just cannot even see yours. Alien is one of the great horror films of all time, and Aliens is one of the great action movies of all time. Prometheus isn't close to being either.

Alien I agree with you there. The criticisms of dialogue and characters that aren't fully formed I would also level at Aliens. I prefer Prometheus's first half to Aliens's and Aliens's second half to Prometheus's. But the first half of Prometheus for me was more like Alien, the intrigue and eerieness of it. I was bored of Alien until the first Aliens hit. As chaotic as Prometheus was, I was never bored.

I like Sci-fi for probably three reasons:

1. Imagined industrial design of our future and other races.

2. Beautiful, imagined set pieces.

3. Seeing characters react to impossible situations.

And by those metrics, I think this film easily surpassed any Alien movie that came before it.

I've heard from a few people who aren't huge Alien or sci-fi fans who were looking for the same thing who were disappointed with the story. The visuals and cgi were praised but the writing was considered pants.

It failed spectacularly at number 3.

Point number 1 is the only one I could possibly concede to Prometheus. Point number 2? Alien and especially Aliens did it much better. And point number 3? Doesn't exist in Prometheus. There is no reaction to anything from anyone. It's all just another day for the characters.

Thankfully, it wasn't. I liked it as its own thing since it was focused on the unfolding mystery rather than being caught in a one-way street as a more traditional, or JC-defined, action- or horror-thriller. I do agree with many that a DC will probably offer up the film more were expecting, but I really dug this release for what it was.

Just got home from seeing it. I really enjoyed the movie in kind of a different way than I was expecting. I feel the criticisms about the characterization and script are pretty valid (at least from what I've read in the past couple of pages... I avoided this thread and reviews of the movie until after seeing it), but I still loved watching it. The only thing that really bothered me was
the alien birth and then the complete ignoring of the event until the end of the movie. I was so confused and wondering why there was no one around and no one questioning what just happened.
. I really loved the world we got to see and there were some great performances there even with the somewhat poor characterization.

I'd like to see the movie again since I usually avoid 3D at all costs and it looks like some of you guys are recommending seeing it that way.

Was disappointed in this film. Way too many unanswered questions, and David made no sense the entire film.

Loved the ship design,
loved the copy of the ending to Alien with the narration.

I think the one example above all others in this movie that illustrates how the characters are nothing more than plot-advancing robots devoid of any real human emotion or soul is when
Shaw gets impregnated with an alien baby, gives herself an abortion/cesarean, and nobody seems to notice or care
.

The fuck?!

I just got back from watching Prometheus and as a huge fan of Alien and Aliens I came away with the following. Wow did that suck! The beginning was boring, the plot was predictable, and the ending made no sense at all. Hell it was so bad it made Alien 3 look like an oscar caliber movie.

It strayed to far from the source material and should have even been labled a prequel to Alien. I read that one of the writers from lost came in and said the script was more like a traditional prequel, and he pushed them to change it and they did. Ridley should have just gone with the origional script.

It is offical THE ALIEN FRANCHISE IS DEAD! PLEASE DON'T DISGRACE IT ANYMORE! LEAVE IT BE!

Just that?

Half the crew just died to Mohawk Zombie. Gets killed, Never mentioned again. Nope, lets jump to Weyland wanting to go down. Not that someone just turned into a 28 days fucking zombie with body armour.

Ah, GAF hyperbole how I missed you (for like ten posts).

Prometheus may never reach the greatness of Alien or Aliens, but it defecates all over Alien 3.

Having watched Alien 3 and 4 for the first time just last month or so, this is a true statement. I actually likes Scott's elegant Prometheus look more than Cameron's industrial vibe, but the latter delivers action and thrills much, much better.

Exactly. I thought Prometheus was a great movie but not a classic like Alien or Aliens, which is pretty much exactly what I expected. It had a couple issues but I can put them aside because the things it got right were done so well.

I'm really looking forward to see the director's cut of this, considering how much of an improvement the other DC's have been for the series and Scott's own movies.

Maybe they can get Fincher to direct the next one and
Have the film start with Shaw and David dying on the way to the planet. Then the film follows that awful looking CG Xeno in a WALL-E type story.

I like Scott being back in sci-fi, and I feel as though his return to Blade Runner will fare much better than his return to Alien, but he should really just be doing something new rather than revisiting his glory days.

When you're on the cusp of learning about our species' origins and on your way to actually meet our maker, who cares what happens to some egghead who's now useless to you? Didn't she go right into meeting Weyland as he was just getting ready for his visit with the Engineer? Why would he or they care about her if she's not dead or dying and they've got only mere hours to get the old man over to see the last Engineer? That's my recollection of the sequence of events, anyway.

Then why did they bother impregnating her in the first place?
Lindelof truly is a hack.

You just brought up the next "WTF, nobody actually acts like this!" instance:

Weyland, presumed dead, shows up on the ship. Nobody bats an eye.

Here's an idea:
Cut out Weylend entirely! It solves multiple problems: it's one less character hogging up screentime in a film full of too many damn character, you don't have goofy-lookin' B-movie old Guy Pierce on set, you don't have to dramatize why he's here(which they didn't bother to do anyway, but I'm thinking of good storytelling perspective here) and since he does absolutely nothing of any interest to the plot whatsoever, no one will even know he's gone!

Then maybe the film could actually focus on one of it's many ill-defined threats!

Just got back and I really enjoyed it. My only true complaint is the fact that
they didn't use an actual older man for the role of Peter Weyland, the makeup on Guy Pearce looked fucking retarded and was ridiculously distracting.

I didn't really have a big issue with that one in particular because
in my mind, she entered that room and David and the others knew damn well what she did. David was talking to father and probably under orders to bring back a specimen in cryo. She escaped, and had the surgery and David knew right away from looking at her. By that point though, it was moot. It was time to take father and go wake up the big guy for answers. Shaw was an after-thought to them then. He did comment on her survival skills after that.

But I think I was reacting too quickly to some of the criticims on here thinking they were just hyperbole. Oh it's got issues, it sure does. I thought I would go in not minding the questions it raised, thinking "I like big philosophical questions about the orgins of life"
But those weren't the issue at all.
Why did they create us, visit us leaving a map (to a supposed military weapons planet), and then want to kill us? Who fucking knows?!

What was the purpose of the black goo? The same as the stuff shown in the beginning, seeding life? Or WMD to destroy life, or create and rapidly evolve life? Who fucking knows?!?

What does this say about the Alien life cycle we know and debate about? Who fucking knows?!

Was that thing at the end supposed to be a queen or proto-alien? Why not use the bio-mechanoid form the purists love from Alien? Who fucking knows?!!!
Obviously, it wasn't the first, since we saw the more familar form on the mural.

Did that form of alien kill off the rest, they were shown with chests exploded out.
And David fount some of the slime on the walls. Who knows.

And yeah, how did NONE of the crew know what they were signing up for before getting put to sleep for 2 years? What?

I thought I'd love it, and I did enjoy it, but parts of it are just messy. It sure raises a lot of questions on the mythology, hopefully the sequel helps.

Man that was sloppy :(

I would love a sequel but this movie will bomb and I am pretty disappointed. Kind of upset actually ... Damn

Also this was NOT an Alien Movie at all. Maybe on a superficial level sure, but thematically it couldn't be more different. Please stop calling it an alien film

I love that in Armond White's review he rates Alien Resurrection as the second best film in the series (after Alien).

Beyond that, I think he pretty fairly eviscerates Prometheus, rightly pointing out that even though the movie is basically a retread of Alien, it's far more confusing and much less satisfying.

Is it bad to say that I think I enjoyed the other Charlize movie I saw this week more than Prometheus? Granted, I had no expectations for that one, so it didn't collapse under the weight of expectation, like Prometheus. Both had the same pros (outstanding visuals and some nice performances) and then same weakness (script), but Prometheus was the one that featured rampant character stupidity.

Completely totally agreed.

John Carter is still the sci-fi movie to beat this year. :D
JC really blew me away. I still have to think about this one a while. Seeing this again on Monday, in 2D, since my friends dislike 3D. I thought the 3D was incredible. Up there with Avatar for best use of it really.

I loved this movie.
Especially once you realize that they are all pawns.

Edit - i don't really see this as a spoiler but whatever
