Most of these things are kind of what ruined the movie for me.
No matter how beautiful and how well made it is, such writing mistakes just destroy the movie.

Just got back, enjoyed it. Bit of a mess but it was a great watch. Sort of disappointed with the
but i'm hoping that's delved into with whatever possible sequels.

For any who hadn't watched Alien though, the end sucked pretty hard. The theater was just silent after the credits started rolling, just sitting there like "wait, what?" but other than that people seemed to enjoy it.

I mean, for HUGO you can argue that is artistic intention and stuff, but for Avatar I genuinely think it got spanked by Prometheus. Prometheus looked like I see the world. It looked natural and real. Avatar looked like a 3D movie, you know?

There's probably already been a million user reviews, but I'll give a quick some up of my thoughts:
+ Absolutely stunning movie
+ CGI, props, everything just looks real; can't think of a cheesy thing that looked bad
+ There was some good intrigue and mystery
+ Fassbender was pretty charismatic
-The story had so many inconsistencies and flaws; a ton of little things that add up
-most of the characters are lame, cheesy, cliche, one-dimensional
Basically, although I could only really list two points, so to be vague, those are two major things to me. Basically I'd say this was an okay movie, nothing great. It was absolutely visually stunning though, and at times the horror parts of it made it really fun. I went to the theater with a friend who isn't even a huge movie buff or anything, but as soon as we got in the car, and started talking about the movie, we immediately were pointing inconsistencies and shit to each other.
Kind of feels like how a lot of general modern video games feel; lot of flair and beautiful visuals, but it lacks character and just doesn't have the non-visual fundamentals to back it up. It's still a fun watch though I guess, but it's not a great movie.

Well part of that may be this used real filming mostly and Avatar mostly was a 3D movie. One way or another I thought both looked amazing, its hard for me to say which looked better mainly since its been a while since I have seen Avatar in 3D.

The Spider-man 3D trailer was terrible. Like, jarring...ly bad.
I got to see one trailer but it was an old one, very flat. Doubt this is the one people were praising about before.

Are all off the cards for you? Suicide worthy? What do you consider 'technical' and not creative? Because I don't think there is a single category of oscar nomination that isn't related to creativity.
Anyone praising the non-flat version should be shot. It was like My Bloody Valentine 3D in terms of how OBJECTS IN YO FACE it was. Terrible use of 3D. Perhaps the worst I've yet seen. And I saw Up!

I didn't like that the most, and they weren't at all relatable.
I think you're reading way too much into that statement. He does mean the stuff you mentioned, but they're generally not the kind of Oscars you place on your Blu-ray cover. You certainly didn't see Disney rush to update the cover art for Alice in Wonderland with its technical wins.

You can make parallels in a movie. You can have a mural with a xeno in a Jesus Christ pose (kinda morbid to call it a pose, but there you go), but you have to go somewhere with an idea to say anything. Prometheus brings up a lot of ideas. It doesn't go anywhere with them.
James Cameron's Aliens more successfully illustrated its themes about maternity (Ripley and the Queen and Newt) than Prometheus illustrated any of its religious or mythological themes, and James Cameron's Aliens is about as Hollywood as you get.

Just watched this today. Aside from the first trailer, I was relatively spoiler-free. The more I dwell on it, the more disappointed I get. It's like they tried to make a mix of Alien and Aliens but without the elements that made both of them great.

I wish the storytelling in Prometheus was as consistent as the visual language and my constant disappointment.
Just saw it, thought it was really good. Not quite sure why anyone would hate it. Visually it was pretty amazing, and the story was interesting. I'm definitely down for a sequel. I also like the nods/tie ins to Alien.
As far as criticism goes, the characters that weren't David/Elizabeth/Idris Elba weren't very good, and there were a few things that didn't make too much sense. Off the top of my head,
. But even those things didn't really ruin the movie for me or anything, since the scenes they gave us were pretty awesome. I don't mind that they left a decent amount to the imagination, it makes it more mysterious and compelling to me.

I don't understand why they would allow Elizabeth to go off on her own and get a c-section. And I don't understand David's motive for infecting her boyfriend/having her give birth to the squid thing.
I assumed they were all too busy preparing/seeing to Weyland since he had just gotten out/been revived.
And the whole point of infecting him was to get her pregnant with whatever he was carrying. They needed a specimen one way or another, and it can only be gotten through a host, so that was the route David went to get it to happen.

Well that's what couples usually do. David didn't know whether or not they were going to that night.
Doesn't take a genius to expect them to have sex a certain time span given the heightened emotional states of both with the discoveries and all that. Plus, he's a robot, so if it does take a genius to expect that, he'd be the one to plan it.
I just have to say I'm really glad I didn't let some GAFfers/reviewers stop me from seeing this movie in theatres. Can't believe the negative press the movie has garnered. For anyone who's still wondering whether or not it's worth seeing in theatres: DO IT. And the 3D is well done and not distracting.

I guess if you go into this comparing it to the other movies, this might seem inevitable. It's a new thing, judge it independently. That's what I try to do, anyway. It's not ground breaking in comparison, but great nevertheless.
Just got back from the theater. After reading a bunch of internet reactions to it.... I'm really glad I went as far as I could on media black out (curse you ESPN Prometheus commercials!) and internet blackout before watching.
I really liked it. It's been a long time since I left a movie feeling so.... drained. As in, physically drained and needing a break because of all the stress I was just put through. I'm also a huge fan of movies that don't answer all of their questions and force you to talk with someone later to figure out your own theories about what went on. I saw this with 8 other people, and we all stood in the parking lot afterwards for around 20 minutes just talking everything over and having a damn good time doing it. I love that feeling of trying to piece together everything.
Does it have little problems? Yeah. Is it terrifying, stressful, and a pretty great horror Sci-Fi movie? Absolutely. Does it leave more questions then answers? YUP. Bring on a sequel, but spin it off into a whole new series (reboot?) and I'm totally happy.
Disclaimer: I love both Alien and Aliens equally, and hate almost anything else with the "Alien" name attached to it other then the old PC game Aliens vs Predator 2.

Good movie.
Production design and cinematography were just fucking insane, really jaw-dropping amazing stuff.
Fassbender's performance was just phenomenal, that guy is really one of the best actors working today. Rapace and Elba also nailed their performances. Everyone else, meh.
I still can't believe this film exists, especially considering how damn abstract it is; I even further can't believe it's shaping up to be a success.
I eagerly anticipate the inevitable sequel it sets up; I also hope they hire a new writer(s) for the sequel (I don't hate Damon Lindelof and want to burn him alive while his family members watch as some people on the internet do, I just think the sequel this film sets up is going to need some really sharp writing behind it - which Lindelof hasn't proven he can pull of I'm sorry to say)

Could be something related to the home release, but it could also be something relating to a sequel; not wetting my pants in excitement but an otherwise meaningless day is definitely marked on my calendar now!
It's fine that David knew they were going to have sex but how the hell did he know what the black crap would do to the guy? And how did he know it'd get her pregnant with an alien? He has literally 0 information about what would happen with any of that.

True but I actually saw the movie twice and honestly preferred it in 2D. It had more visual impact, the screen was brighter and more colorful and I could make out certain details better. I feel like 3D adds depth but also shrinks the screen and it's still too fucking dark

Obviously their are lots of problems that detract from the film.
BTW, sorry buddy but Roger Deakins isn't topping the cinematography in this film; that must really torture you.
As to the first part, I don't know what that has to do with anything in this thread, but even still, if the whole 90 seconds of footage Ive seen can be extrapolated over 2 hours, it will for a joke.
As to the second part, I hadn't given it any thought. Like Lindelof on the Prometheus script.
He already did, several times in his career. He'll do it again later this year.
