Hey, uh, has this ever happened? (McElroy: GAF has actively tried to fool the press)

Guys. Seriously. Stop picking on the game journalists. Monitoring Neogaf for gaming news is hard enough without you guys playing tricks on them.

What the hell is going on? Is calling out GAF the new trend?

A friend mentioned an article calling GAF out on being racist due to the AC3 Vita thread. Never got a link though.

Heaven forbid they actually try to validate some of the stuff they read.

I'm so confused.

There's really not much to be confused about. Not much different than the forum's meltdown about McElroy recording himself spinning in circles holding his review copy of Skyrim upon its receipt. Posting a thread like this and having the entire forum react in this way simply feeds into the attention that this manchild so desperately needs. Professional journalist indeed.

Does my reading comprehension suck? 'Cause it doesn't seem like his tweet means what the thread title says.

Seems like he's saying Patrick shouldn't call out fellow journalists, trying to insult him by comparing him to GAF. I don't get him suggesting people here try to mislead the press. We're just a bunch of jerks who point and laugh when they do dumb things, and Klepek should be above that.

I think you miss understood what he is saying. I dont think he is saying gaf is trying to actively fool the press but he is saying that gaf has been critical of gaming press and maybe other members of the gaming press shouldn't start jumping in (when Patrick rightfully pointed out how silly it is that no one has verified those leaked xbox docs are real or not)

Still you managed to get a pretty sensationalist thread title out of it.

Thats very gaming journalist of you. Good job.

Nirolak's edit in the OP adds context but it's confusing everyone because it's the beginning of the conversation that led to McElroy saying that GAF has leaked fake info to the press. That tweet is linked in the OP.

Twitter is so entertaining.

This tweet happened shortly after. It's kind of hard to follow twitter conversations :\

Edit: beaten

Can we just put the picture of that tweet in the OP so people will actually read it and not think that anyone is "misunderstanding" anything?

I mean, get fucking real here with this "purposely tricking the press" garbage. There were Gaffers calling bullshit on the "powerpoint" IMMEDIATELY.

Anyone who decided to still run with an unverified story that even the members of a forum where it originated thought was fishy deserves to get burned.

For those who don't know who Justin McElroy is:

This is also the guy who quit reviewing a (good) game because he couldn't figure out the mildly confusing fishing tutorial a couple of hours in. And admitted he still wasn't going to review it after he did figure it out.

I can't see pictures at work here, but the name sounds familiar. was that the fat nerd spinning around in that gif with the copy of skyrim?

edit: oh, i was right. this fucking guy.

It's simple, ignore the thread title.

He's attempting to insult Klepek by comparing him to Gaf for shitting on other journalists.

oh

SOUNDS DUMB

People who talk about GAF as if it's one entity with a singular thought process confuse me.

Although, to be fair, I think too many people refer to "games journalism" as a singular blob of some sort. Gamsutra, Giantbomb, and Rock, Paper, Shotgun are clearly different than, say, IGN or Kotaku.

I see. What a douche.

No more obvious jokes/fake shit on Gaf. We're confusing the "journalist".

Why is Gaf doing his job for him? His job is to confirm if any of this is true or talk to the leaker and post it as rumor not fact. I know this video games but I assume these people went to "prestigious" journalism schools.

Maybe he figured Klepek would come to his aid like he did for Dean Takahashi when he called Warhammer 40k's aesthetic a ripoff of Gears. Justin isn't big enough, I guess.

I think you would be sick to know the truth of this matter.

I don't remember GAF ever intentionally doing this, but there was that one time when I think 4chan successfully fooled several websites. Did they ever catch on to that?

Reminds me of the South Park re-run that was just on a couple of hours ago where the internet goes out everywhere. Everyone runs to the TV to find out the news and the anchor sits there and goes "We're sorry we can't bring the news to you due to the internet being out".

Justin is being an ass, sure.

But the "he danced with skyrim, clearly he has no credibility" is silly - that was clearly done as a joke.

Basically:

-Vox games posts about x720 document leak.

-Klepek: Anyone fact check this fake looking shit yet?

-McElroy: Hey man, don't hate. Gaf already does that!

-Klepek: Yo, I just don't believe in publish first, report second.

-Klepek: Also, take Gaf in moderation.

-McElroy: Yeah man! Gaf tried messin' with us before!

Paraphrasing of course. McElroy really had no reason to accuse Gaf of anything, even if those accusations were true. It was just irrelevant to the point that Klepek was trying to make.

Edit: got that covered, Y2Kev

I'd never heard of the guy before this thread, and he sounds like a douche.

But I don't understand what's so horrible about this gif.

I mean dancing with a game is pretty goofy, but I don't understand how it destroys his reputation as a games journalist or whatever.

People want game journalist to be as unbiased as possible and seeing how that video was made when the game first came out.... lol
