The LEGO Thread

Howdy, LEGO-Gaf! I'm joining your hallowed ranks, because, well, the addiction bug has bit me good. I had, of course, messed with LEGOs in my youth, but as a married 37 year old, I just never paid attention.

That is, until, the Minecraft mini set was released. I had to have it. I got it in and there it sat for about a week, until yesterday I decided, eh, might as well put it together. I opened all the packets, got the instructions out, and set to work.

An hour later, I'm subscribing to this thread and pouring over the last few hundred posts, trying to figure out what to buy next.

I know instantly that I have to have any horror related things, as well as Star Wars and LOTR. Question is, what is a good first large build?

Right now i'm leaning towards the 7964 Republic Frigate, just because I can see a full build if it at the local Toys R Us and it looks amazing, but any other suggestions would be welcome!
I highly recommend the Volkswagen camper van and Sopwith Camel. Fantastic builds, good-sized models, and did I mention they were fantastic builds?

If you really enjoyed the micro scale of the Minecraft set, I'd go over to LEGO.com, sign up for their VIP program, and order the Mini Modulars set. You can go to a LEGO store and do all of that, too, if you have one in your area. It's like $80, it has a ton of pieces, and it's a great build.

Hmm I'm signed in and signed up for VIP and still don't see the Mini Modulars set in the store. Maybe it's not available anymore? Or I'm blind somehow. Searching for it on the store yields nothing.

bedlamite: That large Sopwith looks boss! Definitely tempting!

Guys... I signed up for LEGO vip before i placed an order on their site to get my Hulk mini. My account shows my points, and I have the card number, but I never received a physical card with my order. is that normal? how do I get a card?

It should come in the mail eventually...But that eventually is a VERY long time. I think mine took like 8 weeks?

Guess the set time! Went out for some shawarma, came back with this...

Beach House!

EDIT: Did a quick search after posting and realised that's not what it's called. Poster below me has it :p
I was picturing the right building :(

Picked up a couple of smaller sets at Target over lunch. Got the Shelob Attacks set from LOTR, and Monster Fighters The Werewolf. Had to get something to tide me over until my first big set.

Hrm, just wondering, it's been a while since the Cuuso page update - have the Hayabusa sets been sold outside of Japan yet? Did I already miss it?

Sometime in July. Can't remember the exact date, but I spoke with one of those dudes at Brickworld this past weekend and I remember him saying early July.

Seaside House?
Seaside House!!

Edit* - Doh!
Correct!

Saw the 7345 Transport Chopper & 7347 Highway Pickup too but I'll pace myself & get one a month. Still deciding whether I should get the 10226 Sopwith Camel first though, or the 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van, or the 10231 Shuttle Expedition, or theaaAAAAAAH!!!

What do I do? My wallet can't take this kind of abuse.

Back to the Seaside House, looks like LEGO has some sort of cost savings going on. 415 bricks for 55 USD kinda sucks and what the hell is up with my manuals? No more glossy cover. It's the same paper as the inside pages & 2 of the manuals have misaligned pages. I'm gonna do a piece count tomorrow. Do all of the new Creator sets come with this drop in quality?

I suggest the modular series, like the Grand Emporium , Fire Brigade, Pet Shop

Hmm, I'd go for shuttle, sopwith, VW camper in that order. Save the best for last :) if you only get one, then I'd call it a toss between the VW and shuttle. I think the VW is a beautiful set and a more enjoyable build, but the shuttle is the bloody space shuttle!

ninjago-fire-temple-300x168.jpg

Over the past week my son and I put together this Lego Ninjago Fire Temple set. The dragon went together beautifully and is really great looking! The fire temple is by far the most fragile and breakable set we've ever made. It's beautiful and clever but it broke about a dozen times before we finished. It made completing it quite a slog.

We've put together sets like Endor, Hogwarts Castle, Pirates of the Carribean Castle and other smaller sets and nothing came close to keeping the Fire Temple intact.

To go along with my Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium I think I'm going to pick up the Garbage truck. I always liked that and I think it will add to the 2 buildings (and eventual town).

What the ..., shipping from Amazon IT and ESP to EU countries increased from 7 euros to 30 during last month! I was planning to buy Grand Emporium from there :(

My girlfriend sucks at keeping secrets. I have the fire brigade waiting in boston as a late birthday present when i go back in 3 weeks. Yessssssssss. Oh god what has begun. Dear wallet forgive me in advance.

Wait, if I start a lego cult I don't have to beg forgiveness for buying legos...

Jealous!

My wife was very clearly trying to hide her intention to get me the same thing for father's day. She is bad at keeping secrets.

Last week her car broke down, she got a $400 "red light camera" ticket and our fridge went. $3,000+ later and I received the (lovely) minifigs I posted earlier.

Is it wrong to be bitter about this?

Currently have four sets under my bed. Can't buy any new ones until I chip away at this backlog:

-Quinjet
-Moria
-Weathertop
-Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter

Which one should I build first, LEGO-Gaf?

Weathertop then Moria.

I have the Ghost Train, Alien Defense Force Chopper, and Clone Wars Bounty Hunter Ship. My Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium will be here on Friday. I'll pick up the garbage truck and maybe a police motorcycle while I'm on vacation. I need to do the Ghost Train and reassemble the Monster Fighter sets my kids have semi destroyed over the past 2 weeks, then I'll do all the city stuff.

Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter with Quinjet afterburner with quadwing attachments and Mines of Moria with Weathertop cave below it.

I'd get the Quinjet & Obi Wan's Starfighter out the way first. Then you can begin that LotR goodness.

My own backlog consists of:

- Lego Minecraft
- Sonic Boom
- Fire Brigade
