Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

Won't be replacing my iPad 3 with the Surface RT but I might replace my crappy old desktop with one of those Pro suckers.

I'll need hands on to determine if the keyboard is any good and the 360 has taught me caution with MS hardware but this, on paper, is a good start for a tablet line.

"mm yeshh yeshh I quite like this"

Guys... I think Microsoft just innovated.

How did they innovate? Hybrids is what Win 8 has been all about for some time now. That was the future of PCs. Microsoft just did great execution on that concept and is pushing that in the forefront as their message of how other people should be doing it too. People, including me, have been saying this for the last year.

I was thinking if this thing is even a reasonable hit, the way it could change the tablet/ultrabook market is by getting companies like Samsung to jump off the Android bandwagon?

I have had my expectations blow away. I thought this was going to be another iPad clone, and whilst it appeared that initially, pushing the keyboard and having the desktop OS available makes it very attractive for me. The only downside is Metro.

One of the major problems I have with the iPad is the "appification" of everything. There are loads of apps for sure, but they mainly all perform small simple tasks and whilst this is good for your average user, somebody who actually is proficient with a more complex yet much more powerful user interface will have a much worse experience (nothing has yet trumped keyboard shortcuts, once you learn them). Having the desktop OS in the background opens up this tablet for a new market potentially. Apple will remain the popular choice, but there's a market that the iPad is not capturing here by choosing usability over power of interaction.

Pricepoint could be major issue here as well, if they go for a lower price point than Apple (I don't think Microsoft have the power of perceived brand quality like Apple does) than they'll be competing big time, especially given that they will market the fuck out of it. I think it's dangerous for them to try to be in the same price range as the iPad though.

I see a lot of people shitting themselves over this but really so far the only thing that has stood out to me that separates MS from the iPad is a cover that doubles as a keyboard and a kickstand. Am I missing something? Everything spec wise seems to be either on par or worse from a first glance.

That design has a lot of hard edges if you ask me.

Apple devices all look rounded, smooth, and friendly. Microsoft's surface looks like a hard computing device. Keyboard looks really nice though.

I'd be surprised if it's not $450-$600 for the two basic models and $800-$1000 for the pros.

I'd buy a pro around that price for work if the battery life was decent.

It's a kickstand with automotive grade hinges and a logitech inspired cover. How is it not innovative man?

This thing would have been mind blowing three years ago.

Must I remind everyone how 'reliable' Xbox 360 was? I'd not touch this tablet unless reports after a few months indicate that it's not going to crap on me after a few uses.

Touch cover has an accelerometer built in, so it knows when its folded back and it will deactivate the keyboard.
