I was talking about the Pro version. I don't even know why the RT version has a desktop UI...Having access to a Desktop doesn't necessarily mean all those things. The Desktop on Windows RT is even more of a closed garden experience than iOS.

So it's safe to say that this is Wacom then? 1024 levels?Watched the press video and saw back of the pen erasing ink marks. That pretty much means it's Wacom. IIRC, N-Trig pens don't have "eraser" on the back
I don't get it. Is it a regular computer or not? You can only install metro apps?

So now I'm confused. Is Apple going to sue MS because this thing looks like the iPad...?
BTW for all you interested in the pen in the Pro, I think it's Wacom. My reasons:
1. The tip of the pen in the pictures are like Wacom's in nib design. N-Trig has very bulky integrated tip, where as Wacom employs simple replaceable plastic nibs.
2. In the press briefing, they tout "600 DPI" number for the pen in the pro. That's closer to Wacom Penabled specs or 500+ lines per inch than N-Trig's 2500+ PPI for their duo sense pens.
Why even bother making a glorified speak and spell?
How long till it's hacked and running like a pro I wonder. 2 weeks? 3?
I'm actually surprised at the comments here of people selling their IPads for this.
So now I'm confused. Is Apple going to sue MS because this thing looks like the iPad...? I mean it looks the same as the Galaxy Tab/iPad/lots of others. Was Samsung sued because they had multiple products that looked similar and the packaging too etc or why exactly was Samsung sued, but yet there's other tablets that look just as much the same?
Edit: Wait some tablets have a fan....?
I doubt Apple are going to drop their policy of attempting to sue the competition out of business. Even though this is really nothing like an iPad at all.

Running a full desktop environment on ARM chips? I don't think so.

Apple and Microsoft share patents and don't sue each other anymore, ever since Bill Gates showed up at WWDC in 1997.
Pro it is then.RT version - Basically only Metro apps and Office.
Pro version - It's like a PC.
As an iPad 2 owner, and someone who works in a Windows environment...the iPad is useless as a productivity tool.
Does Microsoft have a proper manufacturing pipeline set up? What was the last big hardware they manufactured?
The Xbox...Does Microsoft have a proper manufacturing pipeline set up? What was the last big hardware they manufactured?
Oh right, wow I totally forgot that thing![]()
Pro it is then.
I fully agree on the productivity part. But the Surface RT tablets aren't going to change that.
To get a full windows environment, you are probably going to have to pay double that of the iPad for a Pro model. You're basically buying a windows ultrabook with touchscreen.
Sorry if this has been asked but does the tablet have pen pressure?
Isn't that a selling point they would have mentioned, though?
And microsoft built the zune player that was top quality hardware. They also have been making peripherals (keyboards, mouses, joysticks etc.) for PCs for ages.
So, does this thing have a fan or not? I´ve read here that it does but that would be beyond ridiculous, a noisy fan on a tablet Oo
256 levels if Wacom.
Audience won't know between Wacom and N-Trig.
True but at least Microsoft have acknowledged this.
They recognise there are two distinct markets, and the business sector is arguably the most important.
Pro has 'ventilation' that's all they've confirmed so far, does the macbook air have a fan?
The resolution is still low and I bet it will be noticeable.
if the pro version is 'full HD', thats presumably 1920x1080. But its higher res than the RT, so the RT won't be retina - any guesses as to the likely resolution

I like the choice of two keyboards, hopefully they'll have enough retail presence so you can try them out to see which feels better for you. But won't the keyboard be a little cramped, like a netbook keyboard? I find those difficult to type on.

You really think so? Every graphic designer and gadget enthusiast I know jumps when the brand is mentioned.
Pretty sure the RT is gonna be 1366x768.
Yes they do and and its a really loud one when it starts running. MBA only has vents in the hinge between the screen and the body thus when it starts to heat up it really has to run that fan at high speeds. The pro is looking kinda nice with the vent holes all around it and hopefully it won't have to spin its fan that much to get the same result.
Yeah, and I love that they have the balls to create a thing like this.
But I don't really see how the business sector benefits from a tablet form factor at the sacrifice of power and usability yet.
The touch interface is pretty and easy to use, but for any "real work" you'll probably still have to attach a keyboard and mouse.
And at that point, I just think it'll be too underpowered and expensive to really set the market on fire.
You can connect it to your screen and use it like a PC. It also mean you can run desktop sofware, which means fuck your closed garden app store. Besides, does the iPad even has some sort of file browser yet? Because that's something I hate mobile OSs for lacking.
I kinda feel that this is going to flop based purely on the fact that it's Microsoft.
Outside of the Xbox, can you name any new brand that Microsoft that has introduced in the last decade that has had the lasting appeal of Windows or Office?
When I think of Microsoft in the 2000's I think:
Zune
Windows Mobile/Windows Phone 7
Games for Windows
Bing
