[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

I like this. It looks way better than the stacked pieces of plastic my old 3DS had and it's bigger so more comfortable to hold for me. Plus I like the bigger screen. The DSi XL was one of the greatest things I've ever purchased.

I don't know if I'll buy it right away, but it's definitely in my future. I hope they have the MH circle pad as that's the game I'm really interested in right now.

still waiting for Etrian Odyssey IV, Soul Hackers and SMTIV US announcements... they will eventually come right?!
Since I just tried the Etrian Odyssey IV JAP demo I'm gonna murder someone if it dosen't come to NA, it's simply beautiful in every aspect and thats on the regular 3DS screen.

Don't really understand the point of this model...

Bigger screen but no resolution change.....sweeeeeeeeeet
No stick
No change in the glass itself
Longer battery life! YES! Wait. Half hour longer with a 1:1 3D play/charge time ratio.

The (seemingly) matte finish is the best thing about this update

Supremely disappointed, I really wanted a 3DS

I'm potentially interested. Assuming:

1) I need to see it in person to see how the screens look. Bigger screens with the same resolution might be ugly.

2) I need to find somebody to buy my current 3DS to offset the price.

Also I'll probably wait until the holiday when they almost certainly release a new color or two, because I don't like either the red or blue. I'm shocked that both white and black won't be available in the US.

Any dimensions and weight?

Also people expecting a second slide pad got burned. I wonder if Nintendo devised someway to better integrate a redesigned circle pad pro for the machine?

Weight is my biggest concern with the unit... this will be the heaviest handheld out there by a good margin.

  1. 3DS XL - 336 grams
  2. DSi XL - 314 grams
  3. PSP1000 - 280 grams
  4. Vita - 260 grams
  5. 3DS - 235 grams
  6. DSLite - 218 grams
  7. DSi - 214 grams
  8. PSP2000- 189 grams
  9. PSPgo - 159 grams*

The DSi XL is not light over extended play and this one's going to be even heavier... Oh well, I know I'll get one eventually, but I'll probably wait for a decent colour choice in NA... I will say this, if they release a CPP XL for it, I'll get one with the system for sure...

Winner!

Buying this.

And since this will be my first 3DS, should I stay away from Kid Icarus? This seems to screw over people who need the stand... now they must hold up an even larger 3DS as they play.

Or will the stand work with this?

Please tell me those have a matte finish. Looks like from those pics. I might try and get one, I want to play Kid Icarus and Kingdom Hearts, but I really loathe/hate the glossy finish of the first 3DS. If I spend that much I don't want it scratched and fingerprints from the first hour of use.

this is the first time i've considered not buying videogame hardware based on color. Red/black and blue/black are extremely ugly pieces of electronics.

It's coming, no question about it. But I wouldn't expect an announcement until sometime after the Japanese release in July.

For people from Europe who are interested in buying the 3DS XL but don't have a DSi or 3DS ac adapter

900mA EU Charger for NDSi/DSi (100~240V AC)
For about 3€

They send stuff pretty quick and DealExtreme is a pretty good website overall with crazy prices. If you are sure to get that thing, then you should order that ac adapter now.

It's pretty disappointing that Nintendo doesn't put something this important in the package already, but if you know how to help yourself then it actually isn't that kind of a big deal.

to be honest, I was hoping that Atlus will be able to squeeze P4G, Etrian Odyssey IV and Soul Hackers this year. Guess they just prioritized P4G over the others and considering their announcements at E3, we wouldn't be getting anymore new announcements for a while. I can't wait for their games, they just hit the right spot for the games I really want all in one system no less.

Didnt the DSi XL have the same resolution as the DSi ?

yes, it did... and some DS games can look a little ragged on the XL as a result... those are big ass pixels!

Wouldn't it be cool if Nintendo produced a Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask special edition for Christmas! (Majora's Mask has to be coming, right? I mean, they did the lion's share of the work on OoT)

Price is a bit steep for me, and I think I'll wait this time for better colors. Larger form factor and extra battery life sound great to me though. Only thing I'm not sure of, is which one to use more. Screens look nicer and last longer on this one, but I'm not sure if I'd love to carry it around all the time.

Doesn't the DSi and DSi XL have different connectors/charger? I can't remember since I got rid of my DSi a long time ago and only have the XL but if so who's to say the same won't be true for the 3DS XL.

They will have to make another frankenstick no? The current one wouldn't fit...
Another circle pad pro is needed. I wish that at least a better integrated solution is created, not an improvised one that even requires an extra battery.

Thanks! Where did you get the info. Even bigger and heavier than the Vita? This is not a portable, it's a hanheld device for home use.

But it looks a LOT better. I wish a new 3DS redesign would use 2 screen of the same size like the original DS. And yes i know the implications of doing that due to the different resolutions.

I've always felt the main problem with the 3DS was that it was too small. I'm glad to see Nintendo is addressing that.

For those who cannot grasp the concept of a larger screen with the same resolution: a full HD 24" TV set has the same resolution as a 60" set (1080p). The 3DS XL works the same way.

Why couldn't they just add a new 2nd small video card that only specializes in uping the resolution?

You cannot "up" the resolution of an image after it has been rendered. Just like you cannot "up" the resolution of JPEG screenshots. You can enlarge it and make it blurrier or pixelated, but you cannot add more detail. 3DS games would end up looking like DS games look on the 3DS.

Emulators for consoles like PS2 and Gamecube change the actual rendering resolution of the games and all sorts of glitches appear, requiring vast amount of game specific hacks. This is not viable for a console revision. It would also require a even faster GPU that would cancel out the improved battery life.

DS Lite still gives me cramps so this is exactly what I've been waiting for. My hands are just too damn manly for these tiny baby handhelds.

Excuse me for coming out from under my rock, but what's the story behind the second pad? I'm not even sure it would matter for most games I want to play on a handheld?

You're welcome... I compiled the list myself; the 3DS LL weight is on the first page of this thread, and all the other weights are from individual system specs pulled off the web...

I feel sorry for anyone who buys the 3DS XL intending to play DS games on it... :(

Andriasang says:

You can use your AC adapter from your 3DS, DSi LL or DSi. Or, you can buy an AC Adapter separately. The adapter runs ¥1,500. Nintendo will also sell a cradle for ¥1,200.

Ah ok, my fault for not reading. I'm still wondering why they aren't including one with it. I can't imagine it would be due to cost issues for Nintendo.

Do you guys think it will be possible to transfer the Ambassador Program games over to the 3DS XL? Do not want to lose those games when I trade in my old 3DS.

lololol Nintendo straight up lied to our faces last week

I think they don't actually see this as a revision, both models are meant to be coexisting and are just aimed at different needs. there is no "better" version, it's just a bigger 3DS.

I think its wrong for Nintendo to assume that by not including the AC adapter, money will be saved. A lot of people who already own a 3DS will likely trade-in their console in order to get the new one, and will obviously trade the AC adapter in with it. This means they will have to purchase a new AC adapter on top of the console. Moreover, not including an AC adapter will alienate those who do not already own a 3DS, who are in effect being treated differently than the perceived 'fans' of Nintendo. It'll also likely confuse a lot of people, who will assume that an AC adapter will be included in the box - why would they think any differently? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't think of an instance where a power cable wasn't included in the box of new hardware. I just hope that stockists make it very clear when people purchase the console that no AC adapter is included. I presume (or at least hope) that shops will do a bundle or something which includes the adapter. I personally think it's a ridiculous move by Nintendo.

It's been confirmed that it's possible to transfer everything, including Ambassador status, games and saved funds. You'll need to have both 3DSes in your possession to do that, however.
