[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

My 3DS upper screen is slightly scratched, I'm not sure retailers will take it in their upcoming "sell your 3DS and get 3DS XL" program.

Not the revision I was hoping for. I'm not interested in the larger screen and I find the design and color options to be rather unappealing. I'll continue to wait for a really good deal/bundle on the standard 3DS...

What exactly are you hoping for then? How could they improve the 3DS other than this? It's not like having a second thumbstick makes any difference as proven by games that support the bulky expansion...

Personally I'll be picking this up. I sold my 3DS some time ago due to financial issues and this is a great upgrade. I can't wait to play some of the games coming out later this year, like the Luigi's Mansion game and perhaps we'll get some cool JRPG to go with it...

It looks nice and everything, but no second stick? Seriously Nintendo? lol. I may consider trading in my 3DS just because it has a bigger screen but that no second stick is bugging me big time.

Cutting the AC adapter to 'save costs' when the console is already £200 and then slapping £70 on top of the US price (including VAT, of course). Err, what?

No wonder they didn't announce this at E3.

Play.com have them priced at £179.99

Gamestation have them at £199.

No white in the US, no second analog stick.

Eh. Guess I still won't have a 3DS.

Oh god I just discovered this. Stupid Nintendo. The color combos are fucking hideous IMO. Will wait for a white one to match the Wii U but man I hope they don't beat around the bush with that as I really want Mario, Castlevania and Luigi's Mansion. Definitely not paying $200 for a butt ugly red/black combo of ass.

Nintendo is so stupid. Don't understand the point without higher resolution( unless it affects the game programming) and thumb pad. Hopefully this version doesn't scratch your screen when you close it.

The games are programmed for the 3DS resolution already. It would only hurt the image quality if they had higher resolution for the 3DS XL, because the games would be upscaled, not rendered natively in the higher res.

Also, if a dev would take advantage of the higher res for future games, the games would have to suffer in one way or another to be able to output at a higher res. It's not like rendering at a higher res is free.

Better battery life, the screen scratching issue addressed, more portability, more functionality, and aesthetic design improvements is what I was hoping for. Something like the DS to DS Lite to DSi evolution. I saw the DS XL as more of a companion system to the DS rather than a revision and didn't really care for that one either.

Those North American colors are bullshit. With the XL line in the US, they marketed it to an older audience and the colors reflected this. I'm sorry, but as much as I want one, I will not be carrying around a bright red or blue handheld w/ me.

Why not release the silver in NA? Gimme one good reason! Argh!

A second slide pad was never coming. It's always been the 3DS' version of the Rumble Pak or Arkanoid dial rather than some new default scheme like Motion Plus.

I'm squarely in the "don't need a second stick" camp. I mean, is there more than two games in North America that use it? I'm not even sure I could name them. Big screen and stronger battery were exactly what I wanted.

Sucks that there's no white version but will buy nonetheless. DSiXL is still the best DS.

Weight is my biggest concern with the unit... this will be the heaviest handheld out there by a good margin.

  1. 3DS XL - 336 grams
  2. DSi XL - 314 grams
  3. PSP1000 - 280 grams
  4. Vita - 260 grams
  5. 3DS - 235 grams
  6. DSLite - 218 grams
  7. DSi - 214 grams
  8. PSP2000- 189 grams
  9. PSPgo - 159 grams*

Is that list with or without a UMD inserted? I mean, just holding the two right now I would have sworn the PSP1000 was heavier than the DSiXL...

still no right stick??...........

This.

How can you increase the size that much but not add the analog stick attachment? That would have been a huge selling point. I hated the small size of the 3DS as it cramped my hands after playing for a while. I sold my 3DS a while ago knowing they'd release a larger version. After the analog peripheral was announced I thought it would be a great item to blend right into the 3DS XL. Apparently nobody at Nintendo had that thought.

I'm guessing it was a financial decision.

watch them announce the white version 2 days after you bought a red one or whatever

With no power adapter too its a total rip off, I hope its a placeholder price!!

It's a "there's no RRP, so lets price it as high as possible, and see what the competition does before we reduce it to where it should be" price.

Wait and see what Amazon do. But yeah, anything higher than £159.99 is a fucking rip off.

Just woke up and saw this. Hmmm... design looks a bit fugly to me, like something you'd hand to a toddler instead of a sleek piece of kit.

Of all the things I could see the 3DS hardware being improved upon, larger screen and system size wasn't really at the top of my list. Never felt the urge to buy a DSi XL even after owning all other versions of that handheld and I'm not feeling the urge to buy this XL either. Interested in seeing just how much better (or pixelated) games look on the new screen, and if the sweet spot for 3D viewing has been expanded at all.

This. How do they do not at least have a black OR white? I'm not even demanding we get both like Japan, but give at least one. It's ugly and uglier for the US. Nice choice. I've been waiting for the XL version, but I don't think I can bring myself to get either of those.

I just don't see the point of this.

It's a larger 3DS. I have a 3DS and don't want it any larger because it barely fits in my pocket as is.

Where is the second stick so i don't have to use the circle pad pro?

For me it's not really about what currently uses it but what could have been done with it once it's implemented into the hardware. Any 3D game would control better with a second stick dedicated to camera control and that alone is enough for me to want it included.

I think you will be fine, if you go to gamestop that is. At my gamestop many of their used portable systems look like they were thrown across the street, and have so many scratches its not funny.

I think slightly scratched is fine.

Many people like the bigger screens, that's the point. I wasn't too bothered with DSi XL until I played on one, now I'm a believer. Still, I'll probably wait for some special edition, although those don't usually come out over here...

Was considering dropping by Gamestop during my lunch break today (have some decent credit on my account). Would they be taking preorders on this yet?

I don't know what the big deal about a second circle pad is? I own 7 3DS games, all of which play perfectly fine without one, including two - Kid Icarus and Resident Evil - which support the CPP. It'd be a nice option, but it's in no way necessary. In any case, stylus controls work fine for aiming and have done in the past as well.

So yeah, the 3DS has dropped to £119.99 on Amazon UK. Not a huge drop, but enough to show that they'll be shoving the XL onto the site later on.

I still laugh at people who though there'd be a second stick.

I also laugh at people who think a second stick is necessary for the software the has released or would release.

Understood, but I just don't think that was ever in the cards. Nintendo has historically never been interested in splitting the userbase (and branching the firmware, basically). I expect whenever MonHun demands it we'll see another Japan-only frankenstick but with absolutely no pressure in their other markets for an extra stick...

And using the stylus with the touch screen is a much better solution for FPS games anyway.

I want to agree with you, but as a leftie Metroid Prime 3 was so bad I've actually stayed away from Kid Icarus until I can play a demo. The Stylus has a lot of physical benefits in terms of what it can do but there is a right and wrong way to implement use.

Not everyone plays on the go. Bigger screens are great if you play a lot at home.

Dang I like that white, I'm not a fan of the double color thing.

What is the process of switching 3DS? I got games and stuff on that SD card.

Why is there no white color for NorthAmerica. NOA just continues to amaze me.

Looks like I'm holding off until a better color comes along.

I fucking knew it was a great idea to hold out on buying a 3DS, no matter how anxious I was to grab one!. Waiters gonna wait!!

My only problem now is: Black or Red? woe is me :(
