[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

And the reason they havent included the second dual analogue is...? Because Nintendo are fucking awful and can fuck off for a long time as far as I'm concerned.

Something botters me. What about the 2nd analog stick add-on? It will be still supported? There'll be games requiring it on the future? I think this announcement of a 3DS revision without a 2nd stick puts in check the support for it.

The red circle is the stylus holder which insures nothing is attaching the the right side without being at least CPP-levels of awkward.

There are a few states that don't have to pay sales tax at all, and so will get a 3DS XL at that price. Also, average sales tax seems to be around 6% which would bump the US price up to $212, which is still only £136 with charger, not £145. That's a long way from £180 with no charger.

Nintendo don't set tax rates. That shouldn't be a big surprise to you. If you're upset about paying 14% more tax on top of the prices Nintendo set then the average state in America does, then direct your complaints to the UK government.

US prices are not quoted with sales tax in them because sales tax varies all over the country and no one wants to have make unique packaging, advertising, etc to reflect the price in each state. if sales tax was uniform, you can bet all prices would be quoted including them as they are in the UK.

yes i know what it's like to be stuck with high electronics prices in the UK because I grew up there and lived most of my life there and no, i have not reached a point yet where i don't feel like i'm getting a great deal anytime i buy a computer game or videogame system.

If Gamestop does another deal on the 3DS, I may trade in my bugger and simply upgrade to a XL. I'm still surprised this revision excludes the second circle pad.

The add-on is still perfectly functional with a standard 3DS, isn't it? It's not like the 3DS is being discontinued- the DSi wasn't when the XL was released.

im hoping they use a better screen. dont mind the resolution.

This is what I care about as well. My old 3DS has horrible quality screens, the top screen appears yellow while the bottom displays white. Viewing angles are also really poor.

The general appearance of the old 3DS is rather unappealing in my opinion; 3 tier sandwich design, the overhanging top screen and an overall lack of clean lies (lights sticking out of the system) is really ugly.
This redesign looks a lot better, it seems to fall in line with the previous DSi styles.
I also hope that the bottom screen doesn't scratch the top screen in this new design.

WTF no white one for US? Why do they always have to release only these ugly cheap colors. Stupid Red and Blue that looks like cheap toys.

One of my biggest complaints for both DS and 3DS were the screen size. I never carry handhelds in my pocket. I hated playing on a small screen, especially for games with big immersive 3D environments like Zelda. I don't own a 3DS myself but my brother does, and I hope he upgrades so I can play the games on a bigger screen. One thing I hate about Nintendo hardware is how shitty they are in purpose just for a redesign. With my Vita, I can't think of anything that can be improved on it. Big sexy high res OLED screen, comfortable to hold and 2 analog sticks. With 3DS XL I can already think of improvements for a 3rd redesign (OLED, 2nd analog stick). I was hoping Nintendo released an XL version to begin with, now we have an XL, but it is still going to be a cheap LCD screen which is really low res for it's size.

HOLLY shit juust found out right now... :O SO this is amazing... does this play DS games the same or better than the DSXL If so I can trade in that and my 3DS for a lot hopefully... WOW fuckin Nintendo... I will never buy a new handheld a launch again after this...

I'm thinking about keeping my 3DS, and importing the LL model from Japan with MH3G, I'd also be set for MH4. Tempting.

Fucking Crapcom has me spending money on things I shouldn't.

I'll bite. Been waiting for this to get a 3DS!

Planning on picking up KH3D and Kid Icarus, what else should I get (mostly a RPG, atmospheric games, etc. player)

this is absolutely hilarious. what do you guys think i'll be able to get for my red 3ds before and after this thing comes out? it's in perfect condition.

you shouldn't bother getting this. there'll be a better version of the 3DS along in a couple of years give or take.

I'm somehow with you on the 2nd analog stick (not needed for the current lineup, but some dual stick games may never appear on the platform because of it). I doubt selling a friendly priced glassless 3D OLED screen of this size could be realistic. I have no doubt 3D will be spectacular on this big thing... my concern is that the console could be too big for my taste.

I would find a smaller Vita with SD media and some sort of protection for the face of the machine an attractive redesign. Better battery would be nice too. I'd even rather something like the Xperia Play, but blown up for larger screen real estate. I don't like the PSP form factor (I know its slightly different) or open faced vulnerability to the screen at all. I'd end up treating it like something I'd want to keep in a museum glass case, or not leave the house with. I'm sure there are soft cases and stuff but eh...

Is there a size comparison image between DSi XL and 3DS XL? My mind just can't figure out how big this thing is supposed to be.

Click link for bigger pic.

There's a size comparison on Kotaku:

As ignorant as the lack of a second stick is, and as bad as the resolution is going to look, I would still buy one of these...

...but the colors. I just can't get past those ridiculous colors.

I have a question now that the top screen's surroundings can be any color.

I thought Nintendo said the only reason the top screen's borders were black were because of 3D issues. What did they apparently fix to get a colorized background on the top half of the 3DS?

Resident Evil Revelations

I'd say Kid Icarus/RE:R are the classics of the system (I won't forget playing them for a long time to come - especially Kid, so much love for that game) so far.

Luigi's Mansion should hopefully join that list.

I suppose you might like Zelda going by your preferences? Not a must have though I'd say - the original content is where its at for me so far.

Outside of that theres the usual suspects: Super Mario 3D Land/Mario Kart 7 - two great games and I'd say up there with the best of their franchises (or in 3D Land's case I suspect creating a new Mario franchise).

There wasn't a "problem," they just felt the black surroundings gave it a "theater with the lights out" kind of effect that helped emphasize what was on-screen.

Looking at the trailer for the 3DS XL, there seems to be a port on the right side and 2 places where something could attach to. Maybe a small attachable Circle pad? Or what else could this be?

The circle pad pro also has 2 extra shoulder buttons (ZL and ZR), so I seriously doubt they would be able to make a small attachment for that.

More options are NEVER a bad thing.

This mantra is a common one on GAF, but it's absolutely and unequivocally false. Options CAN be a good thing, but they are just as often negative.

RE: the revision

Fuck you, NOA, for not at least getting us the white one. And that silver one is damned beautiful. What the hell is your problem?
