Seriously. After Iron Man being a huge hit, Thor and Cap doing reasonably well, and Avengers being the third highest grossing movie of all time, I can't believe people are still using the, "Nobody knows who they are, so it won't be successful," argument.

Similarly, after Thor and Cap and even Hawkeye, I can't believe people are still using the, "That's a ridiculous concept, it wouldn't work on screen," argument. It's all in the writing and presentation.

They are probably going to present us with the whole team without much exposition and present you who they are and what they are about through action. It worked for Hawkeye, it can work for a space raccoon who's a master strategist and the best friend of a space tree royalty.

Starlord could be a good "point of view" character for that film.

I read yesterday that Ant-Man and GOTG are expected for 2014 now.

Yeah, I'd never heard of Iron Man before it was first announced. People overestimate how much anyone knows about comic book heroes that haven't already had movies about them made.
 
I doubt the public would care that Raccoon was a security guard for a space asylum. Or Starlord started off with a cosmic ray gun that shot dirt.

GotG does not preclude Black Panther, but I'm pretty sure it does mean Black Panther won't be a phase 2 film. My guess would be they are gonna introduce him in Avengers 2 and perhaps one of the other phase 2 films (Cap2?) and give him a solo film in phase 3.

edit: incidentally, it was Latino Review that launched the Black Panther rumor as well, but there's no room in Marvel's announced phase 2 schedule for both.

I'm hoping they push Avengers 2 back to 2016 and do Hulk and Black Panther in 2015.

I think Thanos imperative is more the story for Avegers 2 than GoG. marvel is intent on making as many franchises popular without having to try to get Spidey/X-men back as evidenced by how aggressive they have been with trying to get live action shows on television and introducing new concepts and characters on the animated shows so i doubt GoG will be a one and done just to set up Avengers 2.

Well, the film being a Thanos Imperative adaptation is the rumour that came with this story not something I am making up. While it is pretty conclusive they can always use it as a jumping off point for future films and do original screenplays for what comes next...kind of like the comic was going to do anyways before it got canned. For a TV show they could always do past adventures anyways if they really wanted to also.

I can't see marvel having a team based movie without some plan to spin them off i the future if they are popular enough and i doubt Groot, Gamora, Mantis and Cosmo can do that.

Nova(Richard Rider because i'm pretty sure he is coming back along with Star Lord soon in the comics)

Ms Marvel and Sword
Ronan(if they can. Just to open up the other side of cosmic marvel. He might be under Fox though.)

Groot, Gamora, Mantis, and Cosmo are not popular enough yet but the films can make them popular. Moreover, I am fairly certain Groot and Gamora are locks based on Feige's past comments.

Ms. Marvel and SWORD is a completely separate thing and never comes up in GotG. She is an avenger and should not be near this movie. Ronan on the other hand was involved in cosmic marvel but he wasn't in the Thanos Imperative story and isn't necessary to have in most of the other cosmic stories they could adapt. I'd also argue Ronan is no more well known/popular than Groot, Gamora, Mantis, and Cosmo at the moment.

Edit: Well nevermind. According to Bendis Avengers assemble the new GoG team is

That doesn't mean anything. Just because those are the characters in an upcoming tv show doesn't mean they are the characters in the film that is completely disconnected from the tv show. Also, in the comics not every Guardian goes out on every mission so even if it was an indication of something it doesn't mean there aren't others like Mantis or Cosmo just back at their HQ.

Well, the Thanos Imperative isn't super far off from that so if it -is- an adaptation it could be to mostly set up Thanos instead of future Guardians adventures. Which I would lament but still be ok with just to have them on the big screen once.

Nova will absolutely have a big role...it's impossible for him not to. Nova and Star Lord will likely be the main characters in whatever story they end up adapting.

Yes, the recent cosmic marvel saga is over. Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova ran side by side and both ended, The Thanos Imperative then ran 7 issues to end those stories.
 
Are we seriously discussing a major motion picture with a character called "Rocket Raccoon"? I feel like I'm taking crazy-pills here.

I imagine they'd like to but they're going to have to cut some corners somewhere to keep this budget sub $200mil. I'm personally hoping for Vern Troyer or Warwick Davis with an animatronic head. Get Jim Henson Studios (are they part of Disney with the Muppets now?) to do it ala Ninja Turtles.
 
if Guardians movie is about fighting Thanos, and Avengers 2 is also about fighting Thanos, than wouldn't it make sense for Guardians to actually lose in their own movie? and I doubt they're gonna cramming Guardians character in Avengers 2 movie to fight Thanos, seems like way too many characters to juggle around considering Avengers itself is probably gonna add one or two new character themselves.

Variety confirmed it:

The website Latino Review first reported Marvel's plan to announce a Guardians pic at Comic-Con. Marvel declined to comment, although sources confirm to Variety that Disney and Marvel are zeroing in on the project, rather than a standalone Black Panther project at this point.

Safe money is on the Guardians losing, yeah. On the other hand, Thor didn't really lose in his movie, so perhaps a pyrrhic victory at least.

Doubt that they would invest so much money into a movie only to kill the lead characters. (especially if Guardians turns out to be a hit) Best bet is that Thanos may achieve victory in order to set up Avengers 2, but not because the Guardians died.
 
I can't believe that the IP and the second 2014 property we are talking about is " Guardians of the Galaxy ". I hope it's great but after the current crop leasing up to Avengers 2, I want a standalone Iron Fist movie. Come on Marvel , do it.

I didn't mean to imply the guardians would die. Marvel is fond of destroying inhabited planets, for instance.

Fair enough...me too, though in fairness LR broke the story. Still, I don't see Variety's mention of the Badoon as a hint that they'll be the villains, just backstory for those who don't know the characters...but then LR's mention of Thanos doesn't seem to confirm he's the villain either, just that he'll be in the movie.

That said, I can't see them introducing the Badoon on top of Thanos and his own race of intergalactic conquerors.

The Badoon are Guardians villains but also more commonly associated with the old team, not this new more modern team. They only face them in a story where they end up getting sent to an alternate dimension and meeting that other team. I think Variety just read the synopsis of the original Guardians and went "oh these must be the villains". That said, the Badoon could easily be used as cannon fodder baddies with Thanos being the dude behind it all. Thanos is definitely going to be the big bad though.

Well, they could have Thanos discard the Chitauri after they failed him in Avengers 1 and then use the Badoon as a new fodder race for conquering if they wanted. That's probably unnecessary though. If the movie is going to adapt Thanos Imperative it is going to be much more Thanos as an individual than his armies of badguys anyways. The obstacles in the cancer verse are basically nega/dark versions of marvel super heroes (mainly the Avengers).

LR broke my heart when that Black Panther story turned out to be a bust. :'( (Well not really but it doesn't reflect well on them.)

You're right though, Badoon certainly aren't confirmed, but Thanos... he'll probably be in in some form. This is probably to Avengers 2 as Thor was to A1, introducing the villain so A2 can get to the point quicker. He'll probably escape or something. I doubt the Guardians will even fight him (maybe Drax/Warlock at a push, but certainly not everyone- Thanos taking on a team of heroes is what A2 is for, surely). There'll be another big threat, no doubt, with Thanos being somewhat involved, a la Avengers.

In fact, I'll just say the Badoon are likely not in at all. But full-on Thanos is a treat we'll have to wait for A2 for.

That would actually be a great final scene for Avengers 3.
