Feels good.

I'll bet it does! I've never built a recent Technic set yet, and especially not one with components like that. Looking forward to hearing about the build.

Bag End just become my favorite LEGO Tolkien set. Just amazing colors and design!

Hh3pu.jpg

Designed to fit under Jabba's Palace, as rumored. Love the design of the Rancor, and the fact we get another Gamorrean and the Rancor master (Malakili - I had to look that one up)!

I both love and an underwhelmed by the Bag End set. I love all the green, but it just feels like the set could have been more complex and detailed. Perhaps use Bag End as the first UCS for LOTR stuff? Please? Oh, and the hammer in that picture is amazing.

However, that Rancor pit is awesome. Especially the Rancor itself. It will also probably be a ridiculously expensive set as well to offset the cost of the figures.

And this afternoon I took some photos and whatnot for lots of the LOTR sets. I posted reviews of Mines of Moria and Attack on Weathertop before. After I get back tonight I will post reviews and pics of Orc Forge, Uruk Hai Army, Helm's Deep, and Gandalf Arrives. All I need to get to finish off the series is Shelob Attacks, but everyone outside of Toys R Us seems to be sold out of that one. Got lucky at Target last night and got the last Orc Forge.

I love that there's a version of bag end actually in my price bracket. Hopefully any LotR UCS created is either still in print after I've graduated and have a real job or is something i can live without.

For you GAF.

Bags have been mixed. I DID leave out the one bag of treads (since they're the first few steps, and they are ALL in one big alone). Here goes. :P

If only I was this proficient at other things in life:

This thing out-sexes the Sex-wing comfortably.

Only 3 figs but do you need more when they are this good?

Okay, MEGA IMAGE BOMB COMING!

I commented on two previous LOTR sets before: The Mines of Moria (shoulda been called Balin's Tomb really) and Attack at Weathertop.

Now for a breakdown of nearly every other set. All I am missing is Shelob Attacks.

Orc Forge
A Target exclusive.

A neat little set overall. Not a fan of sets that use string though. But the upside is NO STICKERS!

Small forge for the Uruk Hai to make their swords.

I do appreciate getting another light brick in the set. The glowing forge is a nice little touch.

Overall, not a bad set, but not spectacular either. A little pricey ($40) and harder to find, but it is the only way so far to get figures bearing the White Hand of Saruman. Be warned if you are a completist.

Gandalf Arrives

Small. Cheap. And the only way to get Gandalf the Grey at this point.

It also comes with Frodo in his Bag End attire, and the cheapest set to come with the newly designed horse figures.

This might be my favorite of all the LOTR sets. It is so simple, but has so many little touches to it, like the fireworks in the back of the cart.

Simple and fun build. Two great mini figures and a horse. And it is cheap to boot. ($13 or so most places)

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I know others don't think much of that Orc Forge but every time I see pics I get excited. I think I might stop by Target on the way home. Don't judge me.

Uruk Hai Army

This is a difficult set to take on its own.

The wall, complete with Rohan soldier.

Interactive catapult with ammo. This is also a cheapish set to get a staircase piece in it.

The grappling hook launcher was the neatest part of the set though.

And although many hate flick missile pieces, it is rather neat how they are implemented on this set.

I criticized Orc Forge for using string, but I would actually welcome it on this set. It should be an easy modification though.

However, this is the only set to get Eomer. A fantastic figure with an amazing paint job on the figure and especially the helmet.

Not a bad set overall, but it feels very incomplete without Helm's Deep.

Speaking of which...

Helm's Deep

The big boy. The one everyone should want. Also one of the easiest and most infuriating sets to display properly.

Let's start with the piecemeal aspect of the set:

The main chamber, or the Hornburg. This sets behind the deeping wall when the set is done.

However, the interior detail is badass on this set. Sure, the flag and chair are stickers, but it is the flag of Rohan. it is worth using the sticker!
(Not pictured: chicken legs and other food that came with the set)

The Horn of Helm Hammerhand. It shall sound in the deep, one last time!

Complete with ladder for Gimli to climb and sound the horn!

Is this it? Is this all you can conjure Saruman?

LEGOLAS! BRING HIM DOWN!

The Deeping Wall. Complete with Uruk Hai bomb. The lever on the back allows the wall to blow out (or collapse to be more appropriate.)

Barricade to throw spears from. All we need is a Peter Jackson action figure to complete it!

Side door near the gate. Aragorn and Gimli sneak out to stop the Uruk Hai from breaching the gate.

Toss me. I can't make it on my own! You are going to have to toss me.

Don't tell the elf!

And the most badass mini fig to come with Helm's Deep. King Theoden himself!
The paint job on this figure is just astounding, especially the armor.

Nerd note: The instruction manual shows Theoden as being right handed. But in the film's he was a lefty. I fixed that for the pics.

The completed Helm's Deep set.

With the added wall piece from the Uruk Hai Army set, and the ladder going up the wall. It looks much better once it is added.

Each end of the wall leaves spots to keep adding wall pieces, so the set is expandable.

BONUS PIC:

All the Orcs, Goblins, and Uruk Hai from the sets. I hope they sell army packs soon. I would love to build up more bad guy cannon fodder.

Overall: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Great mini figs, a fun build, and a great display piece. The odd shape of the set makes it a bit harder to find a place to put it, but it also allows you room to add other sets in front, like the Uruk Hai hook launcher, etc.

Mines of Moria review

Attack at Weathertop review

If Helm's Deep was an enclosed structure I would buy it. Not a fan with open play set type builds :(

Well, you could just build the walls of the mountain behind it. It really is simply a wall.

The modular construction of the set is both great and terrible. It is great because it is easy to pace the build, but horrible because it does not stay together too well if you want to pick it up and move it.

I have Helm's Deep but haven't built it yet cuz I want at least one Uruk Hai Army first and some other similarly colored sets to connect it all..

Just got a 20% off of TRU coupon in my email. Prepare for LEGO to become regular price!

Fixed.

Got a mystery coupon from BN yesterday. The coupon is for either 15, 20, or 50% off an item. So tempted to hunt down some big set at a store and try and use the coupon, but dont have anything I really want.

Not true - some of the expensive sets at my local TRU are retail. Examples include the modulars and the large Technic sets.

True. I did get Fire Brigade from them.

Shit...it just dawned on my that the coupon could be used on Pet Shop and I could finish off my modular collection. Urgh...

No...

Must be strong...

Must not order Pet Shop. Or the SSD. God help me...

great posts PhoncipleBone, thank you. I'm pleased by the reaction to Helm's Deep, I agree that it's a logical excuse for a modular, 'open' castle, something I disliked in the Harry Potter line.

the pictures of Bag End are particularly lovely I think. I appreciate the sheer brick content of it.

That's the ONLY good thing about those TRU coupons - those big and beautiful sets = excellent prices. ;) Modulars for $120 NiB? Bingo.

Grr...stop! Please stop!

But $80 off the SSD is tempting. But it is a lot more money. I can easily swing for the Pet Shop. Must check email...

Wait, it is in store only? Fuck that then. My local TRU dont carry any major sets like that. If it worked online, I would bite right now. But since it is in store it does not help me much at all.

Really? I mean, there are two stores by me - one in a normal suburban area and one in a REALLY nice area. The one in the nice area carries all the crazy sets (go figure), so you may check out the locale! :P Unless you're avoiding dropping the cash hahaha.

Hmm. do we know how long the current lotr sets are liable to stay in print for? Should i assume 1 year? 2? how about monster fighters?

At least 2 minimum I would think. Of course, Pirates and Cars only stayed in print for one year. But I would say you have at least a year for LOTR stuff. And hopefully it does very well so it sticks around like Star Wars.

Both the TRU in my area are pretty crappy. The one near work is larger and has a really nicely laid out Lego section, but the selection is the same. No big sets.

Whaaaat? How'd you manage to score one of those?

I just got the same one - you need to be a Rewards Club member, and they'll email you stuff like that pretty regularly. The same email also notes that the following kits will be 25% off from July 13-15:

LEGO City Police Dog Van (4441)
LEGO Hero Factory Furno (6293)
LEGO Star Wars Naboo Starfighter & Naboo (9674)
LEGO Star Wars Sebula's Podracer & Tatooine (9675)
LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor & Death Star (9676)
LEGO Monster Fighters The Werewolf (9463)
