Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

Way underpriced. I'd say $450 minimum.

I have the 64GB model this time around so I may go for something in that range this time around. Either way my phone upgrade is free every year :)

How did the 64GB work out for you?

It's nice not having to worry about it. My MP3 collection alone takes up over 32GB so the last model was stretched to the limits in terms of capacity. Now it feels nice a open to install whatever I want to on it without much worry.

I download a lot of 500MB+ games so having a ton of them on my phone without concern of filling up the harddrive and manually having to manage things is nice.

I'll be getting another 64GB model this time around. If they offered a 128GB model I don't think I'd need it...but I don't suspect they would be anyways.

128gb

lte

nfc

super awesome mystery iOS6 feature exclusive to this 6th Gen iPhone (iPhone 4s' being Siri last year)

Give it to me!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have unlimited data? iTunes Match in iOS 6 has streaming, which could save the money. But it's okay if you're getting it for free.

They'll stick with 64GB, and the NFC mobile payment platform isn't going to be ready yet.

LTE is a lock, though!

I'll be disappointed if those leaked pics are what the 5 turns out to be.

I was hoping for a bigger screen, but that looks like the exact size of the 4 and 4s.

No unlimited data, and I listen to music enough that it would matter, unfortunately.

I'll be switching to Verizon with this next phone (assuming it supports LTE) and getting one of the new data sharing plans for my phone, my wife's phone and my iPad. 10gig between all the devices should be more than enough...probably overkill, actually.

Eh good enough, anyway I just want a new iPhone already, since my 4 is like already archaic.

Also I'd be buying it without contract (the first time I'm doing this) since I'm planning on moving abroad with said iPhone.

I hope one of the smaller providers in Canada (Wind, Mobilicity, etc.) get this, but that's probably not going to happen :/

If so at least before December when my contract is up.

People keep saying this...the only thing I dislike about my 4 is I can notice some speed issues. It's still far from archaic though. It's a solidly built phone.

I want a new iPod to replace my 4th gen. Just give it NFC and a GPS chip and I'll be happy. A5, RAM upgrade, better camera and Siri support would be my nice to haves. If they can deliver on a new iPod Touch then I probably be in the market for a 10" tablet (though not likely iPad, they'll at least get something rather than nothing if I got a 7").

So are they done with high capacity iPods? I feel like the classic has had a stay of execution but they are really moving away from traditional hard drive products.

I for one would still appreciate, and buy, a very high capacity iPod. I'm not a fan of dicking around with 16-32 gigs. Even 64. I max out my 160gb iPod classic and would appreciate something twice the size. I fear that Apple may be forgetting the person like me.

I know it may sound like overkill to need to carry around that much music, but I like to use my iPod as something of an external hard drive.

I just like the thought of a huge iPod. Room to expand.

Don't tell me I can't listen to 10,000 songs while I am on the go. That's not the point. I want one place to put all my music so if I have a brain fart and need to hear that one chapter from that one audiobook I can do it.

The plan is to convert people like you over to iTunes Match so you don't need to store everything locally on the device.

Stream all your music to your device instead of having to load it all manually, freeing up all that space for more applications. Apple makes money on getting you into iTunes Match, and with all that free space you probably buy more apps which nets them even further money.

Makes sense.

Which is absolutely stupid.

Apple embracing the cloud in all the wrong ways.

I love iTunes Match. My entire music collection is always available and I only have a 32GB iPhone. It's a great deal, IMO.

You can also use Amazon Cloud Drive which does the same thing except for cheaper and is cross platform and web-enabled.

The problem is there are not enough people like you buying the high-capacity models. I'd think it's more likely that they get rid of the 160GB iPod Classic altogether than they introduce a higher-capacity hard drive model. It's just not where the market is - and I don't think anyone else is going after that, either.

yeah, nfc and gps chip in the iPod Touch (and iPad Mini?!) would be a big deal especially with Passbook coming in the iOS6. I believe it's a no-brainer (for an iPad Mini at least; the iPod Touch is too small to fit in a gps chip) but then what exclusive feature would Apple save for the iPhone?

I'd say GPS and Siri would be a stretch but A5, 512MB ram, better camera are a shoe in (NFC maybe? Is an extra chip required?).

Only iTunes Match turns your pirated music library into a completely legitimate music library for a one time $15 fee, though!

You fucking dirty pirates...maybe not you, just a general comment

new ipad too? hmm.. i'm curious to see how drastic the heat/weight changes are. i'd consider selling my ipad 3 and upgrading if it was a huge difference. i'm not sure though. it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle (or money, haha).

i'm definitely upgrading my phone though. i have been wanting nfc in my phone for ages.

GPS is built into the 3G chipset. A 3G iPod touch would be awesome, and a big deal, but they've avoided it up to know.

You can get GPS chips that aren't 3G, the Nexus 7 has one. I think it's just a feature they want to keep on the phone and reduce the cost of iPod parts. But it would be really nice. A 3G iPod doesn't exist for obvious reasons. Carriers would cry foul because they can't lock you into anything and it'd be a huge revenue hit for Apple.

The Nexus7 has GPS without the 3G... I don't think a 3G ipod is going to happen but a gps ipod should be on the agenda imo. Previously GPS was only useful for Maps but iOS5 brought geobased reminders and iOS6 will bring geobased alerts for Passbook, which will be huge, especially if combined with NFC (which also doesn't need data to work). A 3G iPod would be nice, I guess, but I'd probably pick an iPhone over it for the longer battery life.

I'm still hoping this will signal a shift to 16:9 or 16:10 across their whole iphone/ipad line, and not just iphones as rumored. far better for video consumption versus 4:3, which is what I'm assuming is the bulk of ipad usage, and at a high enough resolution (1080p or 1280x800) is decent enough for everything else.
app devs will manage

mostly, though, a 7"/7.7" 4:3 would just be awkward as hell (and fuck going back to 1024x768)

I never got the hate for aspect ratio on something that was below 30". Maybe that's just me though.

Huh, interesting. In the past, that wasnt available.

/Looks at Nexus 7 teardown

Looks like a Broadcom part as well. I stand corrected.

16:9 is terrible on a tablet that is primarily heald in portrait of any size above 7 inches. I can't see Apple ever doing that.

I think GPS makes more sense to have on a device with 3G/LTE. It doesn't make sense on a wifi-only device unless you're downloading the maps. But even then, if you don't have a connection to get traffic, it's not that useful. (I have a Nexus 7 and iPhone - I don't have much use for its GPS.)

It's not the carriers behind why there's no 3G iPod touch (otherwise how would you explain the iPad 3G/LTE). I don't even know that it would necessarily be a revenue hit for Apple - otherwise, why even make the iPod touch? I think it's more that it's less expensive to make and they don't have to fit it in the enclosure and thus they can hit a lower price point and a thinner device without it. It's for people that want the apps/some of the function with no data plan. Otherwise, the iPhone (w/contract) offers data at the same pricing.

I dunno about that being the motivation. Carriers would still be able to lock you in because you would have to put it on somebody's network for it to be useful.

(US) Carriers aren't willing to be a dumb data pipe. They don't want to lose that text messaging profit for one.

That's generally correct for any other hardware maker (are there any Android tablets with off-contract data plans like the iPad has?). But Apple has established a bit of an upper hand. I think it has much more to do with cost of manufacture, the price point apple wants to hit (and their margins), and adding bulk to the very thin iPod touch enclosure.

An iPad mini, I would hope, would not have that same restriction. I'd pay extra for a 3G/LTE model of that!

I wonder if Apple has any desire to make iMessage cross-platform.

With non apple devices? Not a chance. They just killed safari for windows and likely would kill iTunes for windows if they could. They don't want to be involved in other platforms.

They killed safari for windows because it was the worst performing browser, they wont kill itunes for windows because they need it for their ios devices

Just feels like Apple could gain a ton of goodwill by making that application cross-platform and saving the world from text messaging fees all together at very little cost to them (I think...maybe way off).

...of course as I type this, I realize that the carriers will still charge you for a text messaging plan regardless of whether you need one or not for all new contracts regardless.

I don't think Apple is in need of good will, especially if they replace one charge with another.

When(or if) RIM goes under I can see iMessage being a huge selling point of Apple iOS devices.

Safari for Windows was the worst performing browser because Apple stopped developing it. They weren't even trying anymore.

The iPad is not competing with phones. It'd be awkward as hell to use it like one. But if I'm 90% wifi on an iPod touch with Google Voice, iMessage, Facetime etc. and just need it occasionally and have the ability to go somewhere else as I please it puts carriers at a huge disadvantage.

And traffic is hardly the only thing making maps useful, how about just basic direction finding? Like I need to find this new place? Or any geo-features like checkins and geofencing? And I do think it is retarded that most map applications don't have very good caching (the Earth's face is finite, you could easily have vector road maps of everything preloaded).

They still aren't on other platforms. iOS is just ubiquitous and nobody is allowed to create anything better.

There's no charge for iMessage, though, that's the point!

You're probably right that they view it as a selling point of the platform, however, and would therefore want it exclusive to only their devices. "Apple users get to use iMessage, which is the easiest and best method of communicating across devices" - Apple PR

iMessage will be a huge selling point for me when iOS6 hits and I can use my phone number as my iD across all devices—Mac, iPad etc. BBM isn't quite dead yet amongst my family and friends but everyone has at least one device that can receive iMessages.

My reasons for getting the next iPhone in the fall:
  • iMessage with phone no ID
  • Facetime over 3G
  • Smart watch support
  • Siri support for all notifications (an accessibility feature that only I seem to care about; haven't actually seen it demoed yet :|)
  • Passbook (like Google Now but without the turning off Google privacy settings :P)

I don't really care about a bigger screen and most of the other touted improvements. My desires for the hardware are notification led (not happening), thinner, ergonomic curved back (not happening), longer battery life (probably not happening).
