Mitt Romney announces Paul Ryan as running mate

Paul Ryan is going to be bizzaro Sarah Palin. He's way smarter, but he's going to be equally as polarizing. Was Romney so nervous about the last few weeks that he had to go even farther right?

Really don't feel like getting into it again. Just find the spending arguments funny. People do realize that WI had to listen to constant crying and complaining for a year, right? Couldn't ask for more free publicity. Shove the being outspent arguments. They nominated an idiot and behaved like total douches. Wtf did they expect to happen.

I think Romney knew he had to change the fundamental dynamic of the Race. So, he went with the Pick that both the conservatives and democrats wanted.

I do not believe Ryan will be as toxic to the independents as Sarah Palin was. There will be a group of independents that will like his snake oil sales job, because he sells his budget plan very well and convincingly.

At the end, looking at how the race was going in August, this pick I think will be more beneficial to Romney than hurtful.
 
I've been watching some MSNBC last night, and right now I'm watching FOX news. I'm stating the obvious here, but my goodness, American news media fucking suck. Jesus christ, just terrible.
 
The more interesting thing about this is that Ryan is accepting the offer. He's an up-and-coming star of the party (regardless of what one thinks of his policy proposals) yet has just agreed to fight an uphill battle against an incumbent president for a position that has little to no opportunities for further political advancement (a little over 10% of VP's have subsequently won presidential elections). Why on earth is he agreeing to this rather than playing it safe and, if he indeed has oval office aspirations of one sort or another, waiting until 2016 with the rest of the heavy hitters?

Edit: It's technically true that he can accept the nomination and still run for his Congressional seat, thus retaining the seat if he and Romney go down in flames. But this is still politically risky because he will look worse in 2016 relative to those who bade their time, and if he wins he is...well, a VP, a shitty position to begin with (because, as I said above, it doesn't lend itself to any further advancement).

Biden comes across like he literally loves everybody and just wants to be your buddy. Remember how difficult it was for him to not talk about how much he loves John McCain as a person in the 2008 election?

If there was anybody in politics who was just a plain good guy down to the core it'd be him.

This will be a debate where Biden will have to keep quiet and let Ryan keep talking about his plan. The more detail he gives the less Biden will have to do.

That is 100% the case. One of his staff's biggest problem is getting him to stop talking to people and move on.

Yeah he sold his ideas so well virtually everyone hated it, that is a great snake oil salesman when you can't get people to buy into what you are selling
 
Ryan is still a college Republican in mannerism. Everybody hates college Republicans.

He occasionally gets very annoyed when he feels slighted, though. He's made a bit of a stink with a couple of people who got snarky with him. But he is the ideal of the old-fashioned vice president.

Republicans have really stunk at vice presidents for a while, though. H.W. was probably the last good one. Also the last good Republican presidential candidate (poor Bob Dole), so there you go. Maybe Kemp was an OK veep pick, but... eh. Not really.

And Romney is already losing that, Ryan has a LOT of footage of him talking about his budget and laying out exactly how its going to kill everything for seniors

Good luck defining that in a positive light, especially given Romney's ability to be late in the news cycle. He did not have this planned at all and we all know it, the fact Obama already has an ad up minutes after the announcement defining the story shows what is coming

Allegedly, he and Boehner don't get along at all. Assuming the Republicans hold Congress, which is a shoe-in even after what his VP selection will do to downticket races in swing districts, he loses either way if he stays in the House--under an Obama presidency he writes budgets to be vetoed and replaced with more moderate compromises hammered out by Boehner, Reid, and Obama; under a Romney presidency he defers to the White House on policy.

At the absolute minimum, being a failed VP candidate chosen to fire up the base comes with a foot in the door for a lifetime of lobbying, commentating, and swinging your influence around when it comes time to write the platform. Even Palin has significantly more pull now than she would have as a 3-term Governor, and she's gone out of her way to burn party bridges.
 
Someone said this about Gingrich a while back, but Paul Ryan is what the GOP thinks a smart person should sound like.
 
I can't wait for the specifics of the Ryan Budget to be added to the list of things Mitt Romney doesn't want to talk about, along with his tenure at Bain and his tax returns.

the thing with Ryan is his crazy comes off in politics rather than the way he talks. Nobody even cared about Palin's political stuff, nobody even knew for the most part.

With Ryan he carries huge amounts of political baggage that Romney is taking a risk in thinking he can swing the mood on.

In an election where he has already been shown that Obama is controlling the narrative this time, why he picked a VP that requires Romney to control every aspect of the narrative is beyond me. Obama has so much fuel against Ryan, it'll take the light off of Obama's problems and onto Ryan's problems and Romney is not going to be able to handle it.

That's the point with Biden though.

The gaffes are always these "I'm your smart, successful buddy next door who's always there with a beer, a foot to hold the ladder, or a drill when yours breaks".

"This is a big fucking deal" and support of gay marriage are things the majority of middle America see as humanizing.

What's Ryan going to do when they get in a debate, the questions on the Ryan Plan begin, and Biden trots out a few key biting details (<3.75% GDP for non-entitlement spending period, when military spending alone is over that). That'll be followed up by Biden's "golly, seems like you don't much care 'bout us workin' folk." routine.

Biden is bulletproof on the personal history front and plays the role of the loving uncle. How do you do significant damage in a VP debate to that?

That's the beauty of Biden as VP. No one can score big points against him so it's all about his opponent not giving up big scores to him, when he's prepped on specific targets to go after.
 
At the end of the day the VP debate won't matter unless someone slips up or there are actual fireworks. I think Ryan is too careful to loose his cool and while Biden can be tripped up it won't happen in significant fashion. The VP debate will be a wash no one cares about.
