Can you do it in a way that doesn't sound obnoxious. Even I hate identifying myself as such since the term and its connotations vary from person to person.

Plus the gamestop ads that use the word 'gamers' and 'players' make me want to burn the terms.

I'm not arguing intent, I'm arguing that a ton of people on internet video game forums identify themselves as gamers.

Eh. Scientifically we would have to have a study to prove that so it is impossible to prove (at the moment) either way.

But to get back to the point of the argument I think many people can identify with something they love and not have to live under the umbrella of labels. Certainly there will be those who squeeze you under the label if you admit you like something but that shouldn't change your self image at all.

Mothers can be gamers. Little kids can be gamers. Casuals are gamers. Hardcores can be gamers.
Dont be concerned about a label. Just try not to conform to the stereotypes of that label.
Same with a brony. Its just a mlp fan, nothing necessarily more.

Are you sure it wasn't just some organization who tried to find an umbrella name to refer to us all as? MLPcon just doesn't have the same ring to it. Also, it's BroNYcon. Emphasis on the NY, the location of the event. Yes, some MLP fans use it to refer to themselves, just like many people who play games call themselves gamers. That said, many of us feel the same way about the term as you feel about the term gamer.

It can mean several things.
On neogaf its understood to have a specific meaning though.
But its not a bad meaning unless targeted by the media. But they will attach labels to anything and sensationalize it.

Isn't the term brony used to describe adult males who watch the show? Are little girls who watch MLP also bronies?
 
To be fair, I never liked the term 'brony'. It doesn't even make me think of the show. Actually, all I ever conjure up from it are these ridiculous documentaries with the crazy fans they always manage to dig up from the far spectrum of the fandom.

Maybe it's denial since it all ends up being a semantics type argument anyways, but I do not consider myself a 'brony' nor would I call myself one.

I have no idea what young kids who are a fan of the show call themselves. They are probably too young to either care about or understand the concept of a label.
I mean, if somebody calls a person a brony so what? It doesnt change who they are. Its just a perception by somebody else.

Just pointing out that it's not like the term "gamer". Brony seems to point to a particular type of fan of MLP, not an all encompassing term.

Brony fandom is absolutely disgusting.
Its a god-damn tv show. Nothing wrong with watching it but these people have taken it way too far. A bunch of people on the fringe of society who rallied around something so they could feel like they belong.

Isn't the sexual angle more something that is projected onto bronies from the outside world?

Clearly some get a little too carried away with the show though. I wonder if it has more than the usual share of extreme fans, or it's just that it's getting more attention at the moment, especially due to the 'for little girls' face value of the show.

And is the show just an adventure show for kids, or is it a self-referential, winky eye type of show?

Looking at the picture in the OP, that's the sort of image that gets thrown around ithese discussions. But if you took a count at a convention (by its nature full of the more enthusiastic fans), presumably the vast majority are just wearing jeans and a tshirt. But then that doesn't help stir up comment I guess

Looking up brony, every definition I see defines it as an older male fan of the show. I don't know why you think otherwise.

Edit - maybe not older, but males "outside the demographic".
