Apparently today is Black Cat Appreciation Day, and while I appreciate my black beauty every day of the year, I'm quite willing to take a day and show her off to others.

I wish I had a better camera! Phone camera is all I have for now. It's hard enough as it is to photograph these delicately shaded kitties with even a decent camera.

Bianca here (yes I get the irony of the name) is loving our 90 degree weather. She stretches out in the sun and absorbs all of it!

Anyone else with black cats who want to share their lovelies? I know at least a few members that do!

I had to give mine away :( he is in a real happy home now though.

We've already decided that when our cats pass away our next one will be BLACK! I love how some black cats even have black whiskers.

Don't have a black cat, it's a shame they seem to be the least likely to be adopted most of the time, would def get a black cat sometime in the future maybe...

Yes! My kitty has some white hairs but is otherwise all black. Nose, pads, whiskers, everything!

Schmootz represent!
She's mostly black anyway

Your kitty is so cute and furry! :o How goes things on the flea front?

I have a black cat, but BCA day is already yesterday here. :(

Post anyway!

Yes, it's really too bad. I had heard of this when I went looking for a kitty to adopt so I kind of had that in my mind, but Bianca was so cute and friendly I knew she was the one for me regardless of her color.

Found her out in the woods near a work site. Seemed like someone had abandoned her there, since it wasn't anywhere near any houses, and she came right up to us.

It was kind of funny, she'd come out at night and meow, but no one else had heard her. Thought I was going crazy or something!

As you can see, she is pretty skinny in the second pic. She wasn't surviving out there too well, so I decided to take her home.

Its sad that most people are suspicious of black cats. Apparently they're the least adopted cats.

Bombays (traditionally THE black cat breed) are typically the more social breed of felines. They love to cuddle, are super smart, and like to "talk" if that makes sense. They prefer their own space. People are suspicious because they think theyre the cats for witches and witchcraft. Along those lines though, witches would use black cats to ward off spirits, ghosts and evil.

Black cats are awesome, my parents have two of them. Sadly, last time I was at an animal shelter they said that people don't adopt black cats as much. :(

Daisy needs more (hands-on) love & affection than my other cat.
Someone told me this is common with black cats. Anyone else experience this?

Spoilered for downer story:

Every black cat I've ever owned has died young. I know that it's coincidence and all, but it makes me sad considering the poor treatment they receive due to the "bad luck" bullshit. One caught some kind of wasting sickness and died, one died of a strange cough, one started sneezing bloody mucus and died, and a black kitten I gave away to someone died in a fire shortly afterward. The latest one, which had wandered into my yard a few weeks ago and had taken to chilling out in the front room of my house, vanished without a trace. I was ready to get him fixed and make him a permanent indoor cat, but he got out somehow and never came back, which was unlike him. He showed up on my porch a few days later unable to move or eat and died the next day before I could get him to the vet. This was a few days ago.

I'm a very responsible pet owner: every other cat I've ever cared for has been in excellent health and those that died lived to old age. My black cats always spontaneously get sick and suddenly die even with proper care.

I absolutely love black cats, but just the sight of one kind of makes me sad now :(

Ahh, my cat must be a Bombay then, or at least partly. That describes her perfectly. Though looking it up I see they also like to eat a lot, which doesn't describe her at all. :o I give her a tiny bowl of food and she can take a couple of days to go through it. I used to give her a larger bowl of food until I found she was wasting food because once it went "stale" she wouldn't eat it and I'd have to replace it. She does love to drink water though.

She talks to me a LOT though, and is very attention seeking (she sleeps under the covers with me when it isn't too hot out.)

Another thing about my cat is she hates closed doors. A few mornings ago she was going absolutely nuts because of this small door in the back of my room I typically keep closed. She wanted that thing OPEN and wouldn't shut up until I made it happen. I think I'm just going to leave it open from now on.

When I lived in my old place, Rocco would sneak out by opening the washroom window by standing on his hind legs and forcing the window open with his front paws and head. I didnt know this until one morning I was taking a shower and he scared the shit outta me when he snuck back inside. At first I thought it was burglar. After that I had to prop a piece of wood to keep the window shut.

My black one managed to open a closed door once. She jumped and put her paws on the door handle. I'm not sure if she did this because she registered how I open and close doors or if it was just luck & desperation.

One of my cats can turn doorknobs and open cupboards. He gets into everything. It's not unusual for me to come home from work and see him just sitting on a frying pan in the cupboard, flicking his tail.

He also wakes me up every morning at 5:45. Wherever he is in the house, if my alarm goes off, he's on it in three seconds and will knock it over if I don't wake up. He follows me around as I get ready for work, meowing constantly. Before I leave he'll sit down at the door and watch me as if he's saying goodbye.

Oh my gosh my cat likes sneaking places too! One morning I let her out and went to take a shower, and when I got out she was sitting on the toilet waiting for me. Turns out she had found a way to sneak in through the garage window and into the kitchen.

Sneaky cats. :o

Black cats (and black dogs, or animals in general) have it really tough at shelters and rescues. The adoption rate for them is so much lower, as mentioned earlier in this thread. So hooray to black cats and dogs. Hopefully people looking to adopt can keep the adoption rates in mind and help save an animal that might otherwise be passed over.

We have two black cats, Momo and Peaches ("momo" is Japanese for "peach", so a bit of theme naming for no good reason). We actually adopted Peaches because she was a black cat. We knew someone who found a mama black cat who had just given birth to a litter of black kittens, and she wasn't able to take them to a shelter because very few people adopt black cats. We already had Momo, as well as another cat, but we felt like we just HAD to take one of the kittens.

My cat, Hades, won't stay still for a picture. He's affectionate and just wants to be petted instead. He's one of the best cats I've ever owned.

I agree that it's shame people have given black cats such a bad reputation.

Hurray for black cats. I have one (well my parents do).. he's 16 years old now...
His name is Osiris......... and he is so sweet to people...and a fucking mass murderer.
Mice, birds, ducks, moles, fish, guinea pigs and even a huge rabbit. Corpses everywere..sometimes even left under my bed.

Still love him though.

My favorite cat was my black cat. She was an insanely good hunter. Absolutely fearless too. She took on a full size possum once just because it was sitting on the back deck, without her permission.

If they bring you their kill, its because they are paying respects to you and looking for your gratitude. Weird huh?
